Fear of heights is very common in society. Many people feel dizziness, vertigo, headaches and even a slight loss of sight when they are in a very high place. For my part, the fear of heights is something very strong, because when I am at a great height and I look down, I feel that I am absorbed by the abyss.

This film 'Fall', makes us face this common fear, which we cannot resist, even if we do not have any excessive phobia. A feature film where the angles play a very important role and the sounds of tension make you move from your chair several times. Not turning your head elsewhere while watching this film is unavoidable.

El miedo a las alturas, es algo muy común en la sociedad. Muchas personas sienten, mareos, vértigos, jaquecas hasta perdida leve de la vista cuando se encuentran en un lugar muy alto. Por mi parte, el miedo a las alturas es algo muy fuerte, pues cuando me hallo en una gran altura y miro hacia abajo, siento que soy absorbido por el abismo.

Esta película ‘Fall’, nos hace enfrentarnos a ese miedo tan común, que no podemos resistir, aunque no poseamos ninguna fobia desmedida. Un largometraje donde los ángulos juegan un papel muy importante y los sonidos de tensión te hacen moverte de tu silla varias veces. No voltear la cabeza hacia otra parte mientras ves esta película, es algo inevitable.

Technical Data

I honestly don't know director Scott Mann, but after taking a look at his film career, I realized that his forte seems to be action movies and series; that's when I understood that he knows how to handle the tension on his viewers very well. The script was written by Mann and Jonathan Frank; another person who knows how to play with tension. The photography and those spectacular angles were directed by Miguel De Olaso and the music by Tim Despic.

In the cast we have several well-known actors, at least for me; like Jeffrey Dean Morgan (James Conner), although in this film he had a very small supporting role, I recognized him immediately, because who could forget the most loved and hated face of The Walking Dead and The Watchmen?

Then we have Grace Fulton (Becky) as James' daughter, I only remember her from Annabelle: The Creation, I had to make sure, although her face looked very familiar. Co-starring we have Virginia Gardner (Shiloh Hunter), Becky's crazy rock climbing friend and also starring as a supporting actor was Mason Gooding (Dan Connor), Becky's husband.

The film was produced through Capstone Studios, with a running time of 107 minutes and distributed by Lionsgate.

Sinceramente no conozco al director Scott Mann, pero después de echarle un vistazo a su trayectoria filmográfica, me di cuenta que su fuerte parecen ser las películas y series de acción; ahí fue cuando entendí que sabe manejar muy bien la tensión sobre sus espectadores. El guion fue escrito por Mann y Jonathan Frank; otra persona que sabe jugar con la tensión. La fotografía y esos ángulos espectaculares, fueron dirigidos por Miguel De Olaso y la música por Tim Despic.

En el elenco actoral tenemos varios actores conocidos, al menos para mí; como a Jeffrey Dean Morgan (James Conner), aunque en esta película tuvo un papel secundario muy pequeño, lo reconocí inmediatamente, pues, ¿quién podría olvidar al rostro más querido y odiado de The Walking Dead y The Watchmen?

Luego tenemos a Grace Fulton (Becky) como la hija de James, a ella solo la recuerdo por Annabelle: The Creation, tuve que asegurarme, aunque su rostro se me hacía muy familiar. Como coestelar tenemos a Virginia Gardner (Shiloh Hunter), la alocada amiga escaladora de Becky y como actor secundario también estuvo Mason Gooding (Dan Connor), esposo de Becky.

La película fue producida a través de la Capstone Studios, con una duración de 107 minutos y distribuida por Lionsgate.

Plot and opinion

The film already begins by touching on that terror, which is like a reflection that awaits us later on. Becky, Hunter and Dan, climb a steep mountain, but a terrible accident claims Dan's life. A year later, Becky is still devastated by her husband's horrible death. Her father, James, tries to help her move on with her life, but she refuses and drowns herself in grief and alcohol.

One day, out of the blue, her friend Hunter appears; who also witnessed Dan's death, and proposes to Becky to overcome her fears once again to completely liquidate the terrible trauma that her husband's death has caused her. Hunter's proposal is about climbing one of the tallest towers in the United States, with more than 600 meters high, which could make any person with little guts with their hair on end, but Hunter is excited because it would help her get a lot of views on YouTube.

Although Becky doesn't like the idea very much at first, she finally decides thanks to Hunter's motivating words and together they embark on this dangerous and risky adventure. When they reach the tower, from there on, is when the atmosphere of tension begins to be felt. The camera angles and sound play a very important role, making us understand from the beginning that nothing is going to go right.

The plot is very predictable, but throughout the film we will find things that, if we are very perceptive, we will notice in an instant. I think the most important resource here is the camera, if you watch this film on a big 80-inch, full HD screen with surround sound, you will feel very uncomfortable with the great heights in front of you. I don't have any of these resources, just my PC screen and my headphones, and yet this movie was very anxiety provoking throughout.

There were parts that I couldn't see in their entirety, especially in the high stakes. I was in complete unison with poor Becky's feelings of terror as she witnessed the exploits of her crazy friend Hunter. It is for this and several other reasons that I put that this movie is not suitable for acrophobics and less for those who suffer from heart disease, or for very sensitive people in which only the thought of climbing an old and rusty tower can cut the air.

Although the film exploits to the extreme the fear of heights as the only important resource to cause astonishment, we can also find disgusting scenes that can also be very strong for sensitive people. The movie reminded me of another one called 'Frozen'; and no, I am not referring to the Disney movie, but to that horror movie from 2010 where three young people are trapped in a chairlift, many meters high in a snowy mountain.

The plot in both films is very similar; in fact, the lines of each film are very similar, even in details such as predatory animals patiently waiting to devour the protagonists with bad luck, but if I had to decide which one is better, I would go for Fall a thousand times, since Frozen reaches a point where it becomes monotonous and boring, even using humor to soften the strongest moments, something that seems ridiculous in a horror film. On the other hand, in Fall, I was always with anxiety at its peak, and I couldn't see the situation of those two girls with humor at all, since, for me, everything that has to do with heights seems horrible and exasperating.

Trama y opinión

La película ya empieza tocando ese terror, que es como un reflejo que nos espera más adelante. Becky, Hunter y Dan, escalan una montaña empinada, pero un terrible accidente se cobra la vida de Dan. Un año después, Becky aún sigue devastada por la horrible muerte de su esposo. Su padre, James, intenta ayudarla a seguir con su vida, pero ella se rehúsa y se ahoga en la pena y el alcohol.

Un día, de repente, aparece su amiga Hunter; quien también presenció la muerte de Dan, y le propone a Becky superar sus miedos una vez más para liquidar por completo el terrible trauma que le ha causado la muerte de su esposo. La propuesta de Hunter trata sobre escalar una de las torres más altas de los Estados Unidos, con más de 600 metros de altura, que podrían a cualquier persona con pocas agallas con los pelos de puntas, pero Hunter se siente emocionada ya que eso le ayudaría a conseguir muchas visitas en YouTube.

Aunque la idea a Becky no le agrada mucho al principio, finalmente se decide gracias a las palabras motivadoras de Hunter y juntas se embarcan a esa peligrosa y arriesgada aventura. Al llegar a la torre, a partir de ahí, es cuando se empieza a sentir el ambiente de tensión. Los ángulos de la cámara y el sonido juegan un papel muy importante, haciéndonos entender desde un principio de que nada va a salir bien.

La trama es muy predecible, pero a lo largo del largometraje vamos a encontrar cosas, que, si somos muy perspicaces, las notaremos en un instante. Pienso que el recurso más importante aquí es la cámara, si ves esta película en una pantalla grande de 80 pulgadas, full HD y con sonido envolvente, te sentirás muy incómodo ante las grandes alturas frente a ti. Yo no tengo ninguno de estos recursos, solo la pantalla de mi PC y mis audífonos, y aun así esta película me provocó mucha ansiedad en todo momento.

Había partes que no podía ver en su totalidad, sobre todo en las situaciones de riesgo. Estaba al unísono por completo con las sensaciones de terror de la pobre Becky al presenciar las proezas de su loca amiga Hunter. Es por esto y varias razones más que puse que esta película no es apta acrofóbicos y menos para aquellos que sufren del corazón, o para personas muy sensibles en las que solo el hecho de pensar en escalar una torre vieja y oxidada les puede cortar el aire.

Aunque en la película explotan al extremo el miedo a las alturas; como único recurso importante para causar estupor, también podemos encontrar escenas asquerosas que también pueden ser muy fuertes para personas sensibles. La película me hizo recordar a otra llamada ‘Frozen’; y no, no me refiero a la de Disney, sino a aquella película de terror del 2010 donde tres jóvenes quedan atrapados en una aerosilla, a muchos metros de altura en una montaña nevada.

La trama en ambas películas en muy similar; de hecho, los lineamientos de cada largometraje son muy parecidos, incluso en detalles como animales depredadores que esperan pacientemente por devorar a los protagonistas con mala suerte, pero si tuviera que decidir cuál es mejor, me iría mil veces por Fall, ya que Frozen llega a un punto en que se vuelve monótona y aburrida, incluso utiliza el humor para suavizar los momentos más fuertes, algo que me parece ridículo en una película de terror. En cambio, en Fall, siempre estuve con la ansiedad a tope, y para nada podía ver con humor la situación de aquellas dos chicas, ya que, para mí, todo lo que tenga que ver con las alturas me parece horrible y exasperante.

Conclusions

I thought this movie was going to be boring with a very monotonous plot; that is, where I was always going to get the same thing. Although to a certain extent, it is, the production knew how to get the viewer hooked. With breathtaking views that would cause anyone's heart to skip a beat, (good camera angles, I really have to say it again), with very well done performances, as they took me by the hand and subdued me to watch until the end, even though I was already on the verge of collapse. A couple of unexpected twists in the story; the first one I could deduce, since, if we are very good observers, we will be able to decipher them easily, but the second one really left me with my mouth open, you must see the movie to find out what it is about.

This movie with a simple plot, is not like many of its kind that do not keep the viewer in suspense. The series of resources that are brewing, will provoke a fairly strong interest in your mind, and if you have the will to keep your eyes on the screen always, then you are a fighter.

Conclusiones

Pensaba que esta película iba a ser aburrida con una trama muy monótona; es decir, donde siempre iba a conseguir lo mismo. Aunque en cierta parte, así es, la producción supo como hacer que el espectador quedara enganchado. Con unas vistas impresionantes que causarían que se le saliera el corazón a cualquiera, (buenos ángulos de la cámara, de verdad que lo tengo que repetir), con unas actuaciones muy bien hechas, ya que me tomaron de la mano y me sometieron a ver hasta el final, a pesar de que ya estaba al borde del colapso. Un par de giros inesperados en la historia; el primero pude deducirlo, ya que, si somos muy buenos observadores, podremos descifrarlos fácilmente, pero el segundo sí que me dejó con la boca abierta, deben ver la película para averiguar de qué se trata.

Esta película con trama simple, no es como muchas de su similitud que no mantienen al espectador en suspenso. La serie de recursos que se van gestando, provocaran un interés bastante fuerte en tu mente, y si tienes la voluntad de mantener los ojos en la pantalla siempre, entonces eres un luchador o luchadora.
