Horror classics have always been one of my favorites, especially those coming from the slasher subgenre, where we can appreciate a different characteristic of emotion; sensations that have produced us "Halloween", "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and among other popular ones, that magnify horror as a shocking and alienable entertainment spectacle.
Most people have enjoyed some or many of these classics, and paying homage to these cinematic works we have 'X', a mixture of all those elements that attract us to slashers: bloodthirsty psychopaths, isolated locations, young people waiting to fall prey to the seemingly harmless killers, and a final girl; who will be the only survivor of all the disaster and gore unleashed in a dark and bloody night.

Los clásicos del terror siempre han sido de mis preferidos, especialmente los provenientes del subgénero slasher, donde podemos apreciar una característica diferente de la emoción; sensaciones que nos ha producido “Halloween”, “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” y entre otros populares, que magnifican el terror como un espectáculo de entretenimiento impactante y alienable.
La mayoría de las personas han disfrutado a algunos o muchos de estos clásicos, y haciendo homenaje a estas obras cinematográficas tenemos ‘X’, una mezcla de todos esos elementos que nos atraen de los slashers: psicópatas sanguinarios, lugares aislados, jóvenes esperando a ser presa de los asesinos aparentemente inofensivos, y una chica final; la cual será la única sobreviviente de todo el desastre y el gore que se desató en una noche oscura y sangrienta.
Technical Data
The film was directed by Ti West, a man with great work and trajectory in horror and suspense, one of his works that I remember the most was The Innkeepers, a film from back in 2011 (which was not so bad, but not the best), denotes his experience and favoritism for mysterious and isolated places.
As the leading role we have the excellent Mia Goth (Maxine/Pearl); one of the many ladies of horror, with fabulous performances in 'Suspiria (2018)' and 'A cure for wellness' (although the latter did not have so much recognition), her personality and way of acting, gives that special touch to the film.
We also have Jenna Ortega (Lorraine), popularly recognized for her last role in 'Scream 5', which has led her to several nominations and to take the title of a Scream Queen.
The story features Martin Henderson as Wayne, actor and singer Scott Mescudi as Jackson Hole, the charismatic Brittany Snow as Bobby Lyne, Owen Campbell as RJ and Stephen Ure as Howard's decrepit old man.
Cinematographer is Eliot Rockett, who has previously worked with Ti West on his previous projects such as The Innkeepers and The House of the Devil.
The film was released earlier this year, with a running time of 105 minutes and was produced by A24, a production company that has made other great horror works such as Midsommar, Hereditary, among others.

La película fue dirigida Ti West, hombre con gran trabajo y trayectoria en el terror y suspenso, una de sus obras que más recuerdo, ha sido The Innkeepers, película de por allá por el 2011 (la cual no estuvo tan mala, pero tampoco fue la mejor), denota su experiencia y favoritismo por lugares misteriosos y aislados.
Como papel protagonista tenemos a la excelentísima Mia Goth (Maxine/Pearl); una de las tantas damas del terror, con interpretaciones fabulosas en ‘Suspiria (2018)’ y ‘A cure for wellness’ (aunque esta última no tuvo tanto reconocimiento), su personalidad y manera de actuar, le da ese toque especial al filme.
También tenemos a Jenna Ortega (Lorraine), reconocida popularmente por su último papel en ‘Scream 5’, que la ha llevado a varias nominaciones y a llevarse el título de una Scream Queen.
Como parte de esta historia aparecen Martin Henderson como Wayne, al actor y también cantante Scott Mescudi como Jackson Hole, la carismática Brittany Snow como Bobby Lyne, Owen Campbell como RJ y Stephen Ure como el anciano decrépito de Howard.

Plot and opinion
In the late 70s, a small group of people decide to make a film for adults in the state of Texas, as its producer; Wayne, faithfully believes that this film will be a resounding success and something new in the genre 'XXX'. His girlfriend Maxine, who will be one of the protagonists of the film, wants to become a big star, and thinks that with this film she will achieve her goal.
The group manages to stay in a house on the farm where an elderly couple lives: Howard and Pearl, both with aspects that would leave anyone on alert. The young people continue with the making of the film, however, the shooting is interrupted by their gloomy hosts; who, to satisfy their repressed desires, will attack their guests in the worst way.
I must say that one of my favorite things about this film is the photography; that special film filter from the 70s, with bright colors and slightly blurred images, was the first detail I noticed when I saw the first scenes, also its film sequence is very similar to a film of that time. I gave myself completely to the scenography, which exposed all that ambience of a classic, which I have seen has become very popular lately, and there are directors who prefer to stay with this type of environments.
As I said before, the movie seems like a tribute to all the popular slashers of the 70s and 80s, which we still can't forget, as it has all the characteristics of this kind of films with a typical sequence. The exaggeration of blood and the use of bladed weapons to commit illicit acts by the characters, are one of the many things that never go out of fashion. However, its story has a predictable plot in which we can deduce what will happen next (that is if you are a good connoisseur of slashers), but this is not so important, because the sequence and impacts that the film produces, is what we are looking for to entertain us.
As an accomplice to the misdeeds of the film's psychopaths, we have a crocodile that seems well trained to receive food. It is a subtle element to reinforce the horror that awaits us later on and in which we will participate when the time comes. One thing that impressed me was Mia Goth's versatility in playing two roles (both as protagonist and antagonist), in which I was a bit suspicious if it was herself playing old Pearl, as the makeup looked so realistic, (as did the older Howard) that I had doubts that she was someone else.
The film's appealing pornography lies not in its triple XXX scenes or its explicit gore full of blood and visors, but in the terror that surrounds that place crafted by a frail-looking old couple, with frustrated longings that turn into feelings of rage that radiate over their guests.
An unconventional pair of killers, as they do not have the strength of Michael Myers from Halloween or the brutality of Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but they do have the shrewdness to deceive their victims, using their supposed weakness as bait. Cruelty incarnates in the orifices of this place, and it occupies with great honor to become a great horror film with brutal elements and an interesting and different story.

A finales de los 70s, un grupo reducido de personas deciden hacer un filme para adultos en el estado de Texas, pues su productor; Wayne, cree fielmente que esta cinta será un rotundo éxito y algo novedoso dentro del género ‘XXX’. Su novia Maxine; quien será una de las protagonistas de dicho filme, desea convertirse en una gran estrella, y piensa que con esta película logrará su objetivo.
El grupo logra hospedarse en una casa en la granja donde vive una pareja de ancianos: Howard y Pearl, ambos con aspectos que dejarían a cualquier persona en alerta. Los jóvenes continúan con la realización del filme, sin embargo, el rodaje es interrumpido por sus tétricos anfitriones; quienes, para satisfacer sus deseos reprimidos, atacarán a sus huéspedes de la peor manera.
Debo decir en primera instancia, que una de mis cosas favoritas de esta cinta, es la fotografía; ese filtro especial de película de los años 70s, con colores brillantes e imágenes un poco difuminadas, fue el primer detalle que capté al presenciar las primeras escenas, también su secuencia filmográfica, tiene mucha similitud a un filme de aquella época. Me entregué por completo a la escenografía, la cual exponía toda esa ambientación de un clásico, lo cual he visto que se ha vuelto muy popular últimamente, y hay directores que prefieren quedarse con este tipo de entornos.
Como he dicho antes, la película parece un homenaje a todos los slashers populares de los años 70s y 80s, que aún no podemos olvidar, pues posee todas las características de este tipo de filmes con una secuencia típica. La exageración de sangre y el uso de armas blancas para cometer actos ilícitos por parte de los personajes, son una de las tantas cosas que no pasan de moda. Sin embargo, su historia posee una trama predecible en la que podemos deducir que pasará después (eso si eres un buen conocedor de los slashers), pero esto no es tan importante, pues la secuencia e impactos que produce la película, es lo que buscamos para entretenernos.
Como cómplice de las fechorías de los psicópatas del filme, tenemos a un cocodrilo que parece bien entrenado para recibir alimento. Es un elemento sutil para afianzar el horror que nos esperará más adelante y en el que seremos participes ya llegado su momento. Algo que me impresionó fue la versatilidad de Mia Goth al interpretar dos papeles (tanto como protagonista como de antagonista), en el que tenía un poco de sospecha si era ella misma interpretando a la vieja Pearl, ya que el maquillaje se veía tan realista, (como el del anciano Howard) que tenía dudas de que ella fuera otra persona.
La atractiva pornografía del filme no radica en sus escenas triple XXX o en su explícito gore lleno de sangre y viseras, sino en el terror que circunda en aquel lugar elaborado por una pareja de ancianos con aspecto frágil, con anhelos frustrados que se convierten en sentimientos de ira que radican sobre sus huéspedes.
Una pareja de asesinos poco convencional, pues no poseen la fuerza de Michael Myers de Halloween o la brutalidad de Leatherface de The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, pero si la sagacidad de engañar a sus víctimas, usando su supuesta flaqueza como carnada. La crueldad encarna en los orificios de este lugar, y ocupa con gran honor convertirse en un gran filme de horror con elementos brutales y una historia interesante y diferente.
Conclusions
When we talk about horror movies, to the lovers of the genre a series of films that are in our expectations are played, with 'X', we can visualize all that, being a cinematographic work of our time, possessing an intertextual theme. Lots of blood, drugs, triple XXX sex, iconic phrases typical of 70s movies, are one of the many things you will find in this film, in addition to the good acting performances of its cast.
We have a protagonist who turns out to be not so innocent, as her ambitions have led her to do whatever it takes to become the star she wants to be, something that, apparently, her antagonist Pearl, came to do at the time.
The grotesqueness of some scenes is not for the faint-hearted, since, in addition to that, the sound plays a very important role in filling us with astonishment. For fans of slashers, this film will be something quite good to remember.
By the way, I've read that they will be releasing a prequel very soon to this film called 'Pearl', also starring Mia Goth. I've seen the trailer and I think it will be something as exquisite as this gore film.
Conclusiones
Cuando hablamos de películas de terror, a los amantes del género se nos reproduce una serie filmes que están en nuestras expectativas, con ‘X’, podemos visualizar todo eso, siendo una obra cinematográfica de nuestra época, poseedora de una temática intertextual. Mucha sangre, drogas, sexo triple XXX, frases icónicas típicas de las películas de los 70s, son una de las tantas cosas que se encontrarán en este filme, además de las buenas interpretaciones actorales de su elenco.
Tenemos a una protagonista que no resulta ser tan inocente, pues sus ambiciones la han llevado a hacer lo que fuera para convertirse en la estrella que quiere ser, algo que, al parecer, su antagonista Pearl, llegó a hacer en su momento.
Lo grotesco de algunas escenas no es acto para delicados, ya que, aunado a eso, el sonido hace un papel muy importante para llenarnos de estupor. Para los amantes de los slashers, este filme será algo bastante bueno para rememorar.
Por cierto, he leído que lanzarán una precuela muy pronto de esta película llamada ‘Pearl’, también protagonizada por Mia Goth. He visto el tráiler y creo que será algo tan exquisito como este filme gore.
