Creo que los años universitarios son los mejores para cualquier persona joven, aunque para otros, es un periodo que pasa desapercibido y que tampoco se quiere recordar, al igual que la secundaria. Una época de experimentar, conocer gente nueva, hacer cosas que no te atreverías lejos del ojo vigilante de tus padres, pero a la vez, es un mundo que te acerca a la realidad, donde también puedes experimentar mucho dolor, drama y soledad; sensaciones más profundas en personas jóvenes. Esta serie, nos permite ver este mundo adolescente universitario de esta manera, donde la aceptación social es el principal argumento de todo el desarrollo de la historia.

Overcompensating es una serie de comedia y drama adolescente creada, dirigida, protagonizada y producida por Benito Skinner, junto a él en el elenco, se encuentran Wally Baram, Mary Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco y Rish Shah. La música está compuesta por Alex Somers y la fotografía por Robert Scarborough.
Entre la producción ejecutiva, junto a Skinner, se encuentran personalidades importantes como Jonah Hill y la cantante Charli XCX, a través de las empresas A24, Amazon MGM Studios, Strong Baby y Amazon Prime como distribuidora. La serie fue estrenada el 15 de mayo de este año, con una extensión de 8 capítulos en su primera temporada y una duración de alrededor de 30 minutos en cada episodio.
Trama
La historia se centra en Benny (Benito Skinner), un ex jugador de futbol de la preparatoria que llega a la universidad donde estudia su petulante hermana, Grace (Mary Beth Barone) y su insoportable cuñado, Peter (Adam DiMarco), quien está metido en una de esas típicas fraternidades universitarias estadounidenses.
Al mismo tiempo, en la misma universidad, llega Carmen (Wally Baram), una chica con problemas de autoestima y que se ve que nunca ha experimentado algo más allá de lo usual. Cada uno tiene sus propios problemas, pero tratan de lidiar con ellos a su manera. Benny, por su parte, trata de seguir aparentando su imagen de chico heterosexual, reprimiendo todos sus verdaderos deseos, pero esto queda obstaculizado cuando conoce a Miles (Rish Shah), un chico por el que Benny siente mucha atracción. A la vez, Carmen intenta aparentar ser una chica “cool” y abierta, intentando de que las demás chicas; especialmente su compañera de habitación, Hailee (Chelsea Holmes), no se den cuenta.
Ambos, tanto Benny como Carmen, inician una amistad, en donde deberán enfrentar sus complejos internos para lidiar contra la vida loca universitaria, repleta de jerarquías, prejuicios y apariencias que golpean con mucha fuerza a la autoestima.
Opinión personal
Las comedias adolescentes siempre me han llamado la atención, y si le colocas altas dosis de drama, más una porción LGBT, tendremos una sustancia compuesta por problemas personales de jóvenes. La etapa universitaria es la más transitoria para definirnos como adultos, y es la más importante para nuestras propias decisiones sin importar lo que digan los demás. En Overcompensating vemos este ámbito hostil lleno de represiones compuesto por grupos y jerarquías, en donde cada personaje intenta aparentar algo que no es solo para encajar en un grupo social.
Esta premisa es la base de toda la serie, y desde luego, la que define a esta etapa. El ser humano es un animal sociable, con esa necesidad intrínseca de pertenecer a algo; ya sea en el ámbito político, religioso o similar. Esta necesidad se encuentra aún más latente en la adolescencia, donde se generan unos estatus sociales que definen a las personas según su condición económica, historiales académicos, carisma, personalidad, etc. El aparentar, se convierte en un mecanismo de camuflaje usado para que los demás simpaticen con nosotros, y este uso es empleado por los protagonistas de esta historia, como el caso de Benny, quien tiene que aparentar su imagen de chico futbolista heterosexual para agradarle a las demás personas de alta jerarquía.
La película en general trata de esto, de sobrevivir al salvaje ámbito universitario usando un disfraz, dejando a un lado tus verdaderos gustos sexuales, musicales, entre otras cosas; dejando completamente a un lado quien eres. Parece que la serie nos estuviera contando la historia del actor protagonista, que, a su vez, es el creador y productor ejecutivo, pero desde una perspectiva humorística y absurda, usando chistes y lenguaje obsceno usado por adolescentes para buscar conectarse o burlarse con la audiencia que se identifica con esta etapa anterior de sus vidas o que están cursándola en este momento.
Debo decir que, si me sacó muchas risas, con sus disparatados momentos llenos de chistes absurdos homosexuales y con estereotipos degenerados que hicieron que me volteara a carcajadas. Además, en toda la serie, podremos escuchar en su playlist canciones de Charli XCX (una de mis artistas pop preferidas) en su mayoría, quien, por cierto, no solo es productora ejecutiva en la serie, sino que también hace aparición en un episodio interpretándose a ella misma, al igual que Megan Fox.
Conclusiones
Overcompensating es una comedia con drama adolescente que te hará recordar tu vida universitaria con mucho humor, o en otro caso, hacerte recordar a esas comedias de adolescentes de principios del 2000. Tiene un drama, que, aunque no es intenso y se siente algo forzado, se repara con su humor siempre latente a lo largo de su historia. No aparenta ser una película convencional con un mensaje escrito, pues sus personajes hacen cosas a veces muy contradictorias y que se resuelven por si solas en los giros argumentativos en la trama. La búsqueda por la aceptación, el respeto y la ansiedad por encajar en un círculo social son aspectos latentes en toda la serie. Además, si te encanta la música de Charli XCX, entonces tienes otro motivo para verla, así que la recomiendo.

I believe that the college years are the best for any young person, although for others, it is a period that goes unnoticed and that you don't want to remember either, just like high school. A time of experimenting, meeting new people, doing things you wouldn't dare to do away from the watchful eye of your parents, but at the same time, it's a world that brings you closer to reality, where you can also experience a lot of pain, drama and loneliness; deeper feelings in young people. This series allows us to see this teenage college world in this way, where social acceptance is the main argument of the whole development of the story.

Plot
The story centers on Benny (Benito Skinner), a former high school soccer player who arrives at the university where his petulant sister, Grace (Mary Beth Barone), and his insufferable brother-in-law, Peter (Adam DiMarco), who is involved in one of those typical American college fraternities, study.
At the same time, at the same college, along comes Carmen (Wally Baram), a girl with self-esteem issues and who, on it is apparent, has never experienced anything beyond the usual. Each has her problems, but they try to deal with them in their way. Benny, for his part, tries to continue to pretend to be a straight guy, repressing all his true desires, but this is hindered when he meets Miles (Rish Shah), a guy for whom Benny is very attracted. At the same time, Carmen tries to appear cool and open, trying to keep the other girls, especially her roommate Hailee (Chelsea Holmes), from noticing.
Both Benny and Carmen begin a friendship, where they must face their inner complexes to deal with the crazy college life, full of hierarchies, prejudices, and appearances that hit hard on self-esteem.
Personal Opinion
Teen comedies have always appealed to me, and if you throw in high doses of drama, plus an LGBT portion, you have a substance made up of young people's problems. The college stage is the most transitional in defining ourselves as adults, and is the most important for our own decisions, regardless of what others say. In Overcompensating, we see this hostile environment full of repressions composed of groups and hierarchies, where each character tries to pretend to be something he or she is not just to fit into a social group.
This premise is the basis of the whole series, and of course, the one that defines this stage. The human being is a sociable animal, with that intrinsic need to belong to something, be it political, religious, or similar. This need is even more latent in adolescence, where social statuses are generated that define people according to their economic condition, academic records, charisma, personality, etc. Appearance becomes a camouflage mechanism used to make others sympathize with us, and this use is employed by the protagonists of this story, as in the case of Benny, who has to pretend to be a heterosexual soccer player to please other people of high status.
The movie in general is about this, about surviving the wild university environment using a disguise, leaving aside your true sexual and musical tastes, among other things, completely leaving aside who you are. It seems that the series is telling us the story of the main actor, who, in turn, is the creator and executive producer, but from a humorous and absurd perspective, using jokes and obscene language used by teenagers to seek to connect or make fun of the audience that identifies with this previous stage of their lives or who are currently studying it.
I must say, it did get a lot of laughs out of me, with its nonsensical moments full of absurd homosexual jokes and degenerate stereotypes that made me turn around and laugh out loud. Also, throughout the series, we can listen to songs by Charli XCX (one of my favorite pop artists) on her playlist, who, by the way, is not only an executive producer in the series, but also makes an appearance in an episode playing herself, as well as Megan Fox.
Conclusions
Overcompensating is a comedy with teenage drama that will make you remember your college life with a lot of humor, or in another case, make you remember those teen comedies of the early 2000s. It has a drama, which, although it is not intense and feels a bit forced, is relieved with its humor always latent throughout its story. It does not appear to be a conventional film with a scripted message, as its characters sometimes do very contradictory things that resolve themselves in the plot twists. The search for acceptance, respect, and the anxiety to fit into a social circle are latent aspects throughout the series. Plus, if you love Charli XCX's music, then you have another reason to watch it, so I highly recommend it.
