Every now and then, we all want to connect with a movie or TV show that better expresses how we feel and HBO's Insecure does just that for me.
Set in the urban area of Inglewood, LA is this comedy-drama detailing the life of Issa Dee (Issa Rae) as she faces life as an awkward black girl (awkward black girl here) battling relationships, friendships, finances and fulfilling her dreams.
Season 4 takes off in her apartment, doing yoga stretches with her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji) and talking about Issa being focused despite no job, no man. Good vibes only
Issa's block party plans from season 3 is still in place. She had her planning coordinator Condola (Christina Elmore) making sure the party was going to be hit, Issa was really impressed with her. They get along so well and are having a chitty chat when they both realize the new guy Condola had been yapping about is in fact, Issa's ex. It gets even more awkward when Condola realizes the ex couple dated for five years.
Now they both try to play it cool but it obviously isn't as there's tension between the ladies. It isn't like a bad vibes kinda tensed, just really really awkward that it has Issa's wild imagination creating weird images. She imagines Condola and Lawrence her ex, Condola's new boo, rumpo all over her apartment in a 'in your face' fashion. She tries to overlook it and be professional as Condola is really competent at her job as a party coordinator.
Molly on the other hand isn't enthusiastic about Issa still being friends with Condola cos, who still remains friends with someone dating their ex? The block party is a success and Issa is happy, all cherry faced as she cleans up the yard with Molly's help after the party. Issa has a lil talk with Molly about how Molly seems to really like a guy, Andrew, she had been having fun with. Molly then points out Issa still keeps Condola close because she still wants an access to Lawrence and enjoys here life being messy.
Issa barely engages Molly in this discussion.
This in my opinion is a typical case of friends projecting their insecurities on their friends. Molly comes off as that friend that only feels good about herself when her friend Issa is going through one shit or another. Here is Issa happy about the night's achievement and Molly felt it the right moment to call her life messy. Coming from someone dating a married man with hopes he'd leave his wife for her or is it developing feelings for someone she's just meant to be having fun with.
So that's the first episode, I'll be back with more tea
Quick question, would you still remain friends with someone dating your ex?
