Gladiator is the original film from 2000, directed by British Ridley Scott, and starring Russell Crowe playing the remembered Maximus Decimus Meridius, who by the way won the Oscar for Best Actor, and the film also won 4 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Costumes and Best Visual Effects. It told a great story of revenge and redemption that captivated everyone in the world, although I must confess that my favorite film of this genre is Troy, since in high school I studied a lot The Iliad by Homer, and as you know Troy is a film adaptation of it, for me it was very exciting to remember the kidnapping of Helen, and the battle between Achilles and Hector. I think I strayed... I'm going to what this post is really about.
Gladiador la película original del año 2000, dirigida por el británico Ridley Scott, y protagonizada por Russell Crowe interpretando al recordado Maximus Décimo Meridio, quien por cierto ganó el Oscar como Mejor Actor, y la película también ganó 4 Oscar que incluía Mejor Película, Mejor Diseño de Producción, Mejor Vestuario y Mejores Efectos Visuales. Narró una gran historia de venganza y redención que atrapó a todos en el mundo, aunque debo confesarles que de este género mi película preferida es Troya, ya que en el liceo estudié mucho La Ilíada de Homero, y como saben Troya es una adaptación cinematográfica de ella, para mí fue muy emocionante recordar el secuestro de Helena, y la batalla entre Aquiles y Héctor. Creo que me desvié... voy a lo que realmente se trata este post.
Gladiator II is a sequel to the aforementioned Gladiator, which is now brought to the big screen 24 years later by the same Director Ridley Scott.
It continues the story of decadent Rome, ruled by the ruthless twin emperors Geta and Caracalla. Now with the story of Lucius (Paul Mescal), son of Maximus Decimus Meridius, who as we remember his mother sent away from Rome at the end of the movie Gladiator. Lucius lived as a soldier under the name of Hanno, but the Roman Empire sent General Marcus Acacius (Peter Pascal) who sacked the place where he lived, killing his partner in battle and making him a slave, later he is sold to Macrinus (Denzel Washington) a gladiator merchant who immediately became interested in Lucius upon seeing his strength and skill.

Continúa la historia de la decadente Roma, gobernada por los despiadados emperadores gemelos Geta y Caracalla. In Gladiator II we will have two plots:
1- The Plot of Lucius and the search for Revenge: Lucius has his own opinion about Rome, about corruption and the use of power to the detriment of the people. He wants to avenge the death of his partner and his people, and he holds Acacius directly responsible.
2- The Plot of Macrinus, who aspires to become a powerful figure within the Roman Empire, controlling both the slave trade and the arena of the Colosseum. He is a cunning and calculating man who sees chaos and violence as an opportunity to rise in power. He crosses paths with Lucius, and quickly recognizes his potential as a gladiator. He sees in Lucius not only a great warrior, but also a useful tool in his power game.
En Gladiador II tendremos entonces dos tramas:
1- La Trama de Lucio y la búsqueda de Venganza: Lucio tiene su propia opinión sobre Roma, sobre la corrupción y el manejo del poder en detrimento del pueblo. Desea vengar la muerte de su pareja y de su pueblo, y hace responsable directo a Acacius.
2- La Trama de Macrinus, aspira convertirse en una figura poderosa dentro del Imperio Romano, controlando tanto el comercio de esclavos como la arena del Coliseo. Es un hombre astuto y calculador que ve en el caos y la violencia una oportunidad para ascender en el poder. Se cruza en el camino de Lucio, y rápidamente reconoce su potencial como gladiador. Ve en Lucio no solo un gran guerrero, sino también un herramienta útil en su juego de poder.
The choreographies of the fights: they were well executed, giving the feeling that the actors are really fighting. A lot of emphasis has been put on the brutality and violence of the fights, which increases the tension and visual impact.
The Naumachia or naval battles: I actually stopped the movie and looked up on the internet if this was real, and I learned at this age that gladiator fights did take place on model ships. The director combined special effects, creating an impressive and memorable visual spectacle (albeit exaggerated).
The setting: The director managed to recreate interesting settings visually, where the Coliseum, the cities, the costumes, the props, everything looked beautiful and gave us information about what everything was like at that time.
Las coreografías de las peleas: estuvieron bien ejecutadas, dando la sensación de que los actores están realmente luchando. Se ha puesto mucho énfasis en la brutalidad y la violencia de los combates, lo que aumenta la tensión y el impacto visual.

La ambientación: El director logró recrear escenarios interesantes visualmente, donde El Coliseo, las ciudades, el vestuario, la utilería, todo se veía hermoso y nos dieron información sobre como era todo en esa época.
I was hoping that Lucius would be played by the actor Spencer Treat Clark who brought him to life in the original Gladiator, who is now grown up and could have played him. I feel that it would have been a great gift for the audience. I don't know the reasons they had for choosing Paul Mescal instead, who did well and made him look like Maximus' son, but I think that if they had wanted to, they would have done the same with the original actor.
The Exaggeration with the use of animals: They used monkeys, I think they were supposed to be baboons, but they were very different, almost unrecognizable. Also, they included large and aggressive sharks in the naval battles.
Too much fan service: One thing is to make references to the first film, but in Gladiator II they wanted to make us feel emotional with too many aspects of Maximus and this seems to me to have taken away from its originality.
The Performances: I didn't find them very memorable, this is just my personal opinion. I've heard that some people liked Denzel's performance, but for me it was Denzel being Denzel, I think he was very comfortable playing Macrinus. I'm left with John Hannah's performance in the Spartacus series who was also a slave buyer and Gladiator owner with political ambitions, I think that performance was better.
Esperaba que Lucio fuese interpretado por el actor Spencer Treat Clark que le dio vida en la película original Gladiador, que ya ha crecido y podía representarlo. Siento que hubiese sido un gran regalo para los espectadores. Desconozco las razones que tuvieron para elegir en su lugar a Paul Mescal, que lo hizo bien y lo hicieron lucir como sería físicamente el hijo de Maximus, pero creo que de proponérselo también hubiesen hecho lo mismo con el actor original.
La Exageración con la utilización de animales: Utilizaron monos, creo que supuestamente eran babuinos, pero estaban muy diferentes, casi irreconocibles. Además, de incluir tiburones grandes y agresivos en las batallas navales.
Demasiado fan service: Una cosa es hacer guiños o darnos referencias de la primera película, pero en Gladiador II querían hacernos emocionar con demasiados aspectos a Maximus y esto me parece que le restó originalidad.
- Las Actuaciones: No las vi muy memorables que se digan, esto es muy mi opinión personal. He escuchado que a algunos les gustó la actuación de Denzel, pero para mí era Denzel haciendo de Denzel, creo que fue muy cómodo representar a Macrinus. Me quedo con la actuación de John Hannah en la serie Espartacus quien también fue un comprador de esclavos y dueño de Gladiadores con ambiciones políticas, creo que esa actuación estuvo mejor.
Honestly, I don't recommend it. If someone watches it, I think they can have conversation topics about the aspects I mentioned in this post that I "liked" and "didn't like" and maybe learn some aspects about the history of Rome as well. But as a movie I don't recommend it.
In this genre, as I mentioned, I prefer Troy a thousand times, and the Spartacus Blood and Sand series. But this is just my opinion, maybe this movie will even be valued and considered by the Academy for an award, that is just my opinion as a spectator and movie fan.

Honestamente, no la Recomiendo. Si alguien la ve, creo que puede tener temas de conversación sobre los aspectos que mencioné en esta publicación que "Me gustaron" y que "No me gustaron" y tal vez aprenda también de alguno aspectos sobre la historia de Roma. Pero como película no la recomiendo.
De este género como les mencioné prefiero mil veces a Troya, y la serie Espartacus Sangre y Arena. Pero esta es solo mi opinión, tal vez esta película sea incluso la Academia la valore y considere para ser premiada, ésa es solo mi opinión como espectadora y aficionada al cine.
