Movies or series about gastronomy are among my favorites because we get to see the behind-the-scenes of everything that happens in a restaurant, with delicious images, detailed techniques from wherever the recipes come from, the quest for perfection of those demanding workers, the dynamics with their diners, the everyday problems, and the stories of the characters. So it's a subject that can be leveraged and can give us more than just a story; we often learn things through them.
I didn't know this movie, I got to it because I was looking for a series where the actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau participates, whom we will definitely always remember for his role as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, and reviewing his filmography it caught my attention to see him as a Chef in this movie, so I had to make some time to see it first, it is a 2021 movie and is from his country of origin Denmark.
Las películas o series sobre Gastronomía son de mis preferidas, porque podemos ver el detrás de todo lo que pasa en un restaurant, con imágenes deliciosas, técnicas detalladas de donde sean las recetas, la búsqueda de la perfección de esos exigentes trabajadores, las dinámicas con sus comensales, los problemas cotidianos y las historias de los personajes, así que es una temática que puede ser aprovechada y nos puede entregar más que una historia, muchas veces aprendemos cosas a través de ellas.
Esta película no la conocía, llegué a ella porque estaba buscando una serie donde participa el actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau a quien definitivamente recordaremos siempre por su papel como Jaime Lannister en Game of Thrones, y revisando su filmografía me llamó la atención verlo como un Chef en esta película, así que tuve que hacer un tiempo para verla primero, es una película del 2021 y es de su país de origen Dinamarca.
This film centers on the brilliant chef Carsten (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who is obsessed with achieving the coveted Michelin star, and his wife and business partner Maggie, who struggles to keep their family afloat while pursuing this all-consuming dream. It's truly the story of this couple, or of everything they sacrificed as a family for their obsession to obtain this distinction.
The Michelin Star is a symbol of Carsten's obsession; it's not just a culinary recognition; it's the ultimate validation, the pinnacle of his career, or the complete opposite if he fails to achieve it. What should clearly be a professional goal becomes his self-perception as a successful or unsuccessful person. It gives us the opportunity to explore aspects such as emotional connection, honesty, the role of parents, trust as a couple, and even how they will be able to test their integrity and sense of morality to achieve their goals. At the end of the film, we can reflect on what success is if it leaves you without the people you love or if it leaves you without your own peace. It's a very thoughtful film.
En esta película tenemos como protagonista al brillante Chef Carsten (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) que está obsesionado con conseguir la anhelada estrella Michelin, y su esposa y socia Maggie, que lucha por mantener a flote su familia mientras persiguen este sueño que lo consume todo, realmente es la historia de esta pareja o de todo lo que sacrificaron como familia por su obsesión para obtener esta distinción.
La Estrella Michelin es un símbolo de la obsesión de Carsten, no es solo un reconocimiento culinario, es la validación definitiva, el pináculo de su carrera o de todo lo contrario en caso de no lograrla. Lo que debería ser claramente un objetivo profesional se convierte en su autopercepción como una persona exitosa o fracasada. Nos da la oportunidad de analizar aspectos como la conexión emocional, la honestidad, el rol de padres, la confianza como pareja e incluso cómo serán capaces de poner a prueba su integridad y sentido de moral para lograr los objetivos. Al final de la película podemos reflexionar sobre qué es el éxito si te deja sin las personas que amas o si te deja sin tu propia paz, es una película muy reflexiva.
Lessons learned from the pursuit of a Michelin star
Every film or series about gastronomy teaches me lessons about this demanding world, and although the main narrative of this film is the personal, couple, and family drama, it taught me some aspects about the process of applying for and achieving (or not) the coveted Michelin Star. I'm going to describe them in a list or in detail. This helps me avoid rambling too much, and I don't think I'll bore you.
1- The Pressure and Obsession with Perfection:
The pursuit of a Michelin star is an obsession that consumes every aspect of the chef's life, their family, and their team, day after day. There's immense pressure to ensure every dish is impeccable, every service is perfect, with no room for error, and every detail, from the temperature of the food to the presentation, is crucial. A Michelin Star isn't just a goal; it's a very heavy burden.
2. Personal Sacrifice:
The film shows us that achieving this level of excellence, and being recognized by guides like Michelin, requires a very high cost in the personal lives of chefs and their families, with endless hours, sleepless nights, constant tension, and the disruption of family and personal life. Food unites us, but this perfectionist goal can also separate us from reality and what is truly important: family.
Lecciones aprendidas sobre la búsqueda de la Estrella Michelin
Cada película o serie sobre Gastronomía me deja aprendizajes sobre este exigente mundo, y aunque esta película la principal narrativa es el drama personal, de pareja y de familia; me dejó como aprendizaje algunos aspectos sobre el Proceso para Optar y conseguir (o no) la anhelada Estrella Michelin, y los voy a describir en forma de lista o puntual, esto me ayuda a no divagar tanto y creo que no los aburriré.
1- La Presión y la Obsesión por la Perfección:
La búsqueda de una estrella Michelin es una obsesión que consume día a día cada aspecto de la vida del chef, de su familia y de su equipo. Es una presión inmensa para que cada plato sea impecable, cada servicio perfecto, sin margen para errores, y cada detalle desde la temperatura de la comida hasta la presentación, es crucial. Una Estrella Michelin no es solo un objetivo, es una carga muy pesada.
2. El Sacrificio Personal:
La película nos deja ver que para alcanzar ese nivel de excelencia, y ser reconocido por guías como Michelin, exige un costo muy alto en la vida personal de los chefs y sus familias, con horas interminables, noches sin dormir, tensión constante, y la anulación de la vida familiar y personal. La comida une, pero este objetivo tan perfeccionista también es capaz de separarnos de la realidad y lo verdaderamente importante, que es familia.
3- The Anonymous Inspectors:
I've seen this in several movies and series. The identity of the Michelin Inspectors is one of the most intriguing and stressful aspects for chefs. Not knowing who they are is a constant pressure, and Chef Carsten is forced to maintain an unwavering level of excellence in every service. Any customer could be the one deciding their future; this uncertainty increases the pressure and anxiety level.
4- The Desire for Innovation:
I believe chefs are artists and scientists at the same time, testing ingredients, techniques, and processes, constructing and deconstructing recipes, in order to have something original and unique on their menu, something distinctive and excellent. In this film, Chef Carsten is constantly experimenting and pushing the boundaries to create dishes that are not only delicious, but memorable and unique. This includes the importance of presenting dishes down to the smallest details.
3- Los Inspectores Anónimos:
Esto lo he visto en varias películas o series, la identidad de los Inspectores de Michelin es uno de los aspectos más intrigantes y estresantes para los Chefs, no saber quien es o quienes son, es una presión constante, y el Chef Carsten se ve obligado a mantener un nivel de excelencia inquebrantable en cada servicio. Cualquier cliente podría ser el que decide su futuro, esta incertidumbre eleva la presión y el nivel de ansiedad.
4- El Deseo de Innovación:
Los Chefs creo que son artistas y científicos a la vez, probando insumos, ingredientes, técnicas y procesos, construyendo y deconstruyendo recetas, para poder tener en su menú algo original y único, algo que sea distintivo y excelente. En esta película el Chef Carsten está constantemente experimentando y empujando los límites para crear platos que no solo sean deliciosos, sino memorables y únicos, esto incluye la importancia de la Presentación de los platos en detalles minúsculos.
5- The Culinary Criticism:
Another very important aspect to achieve the coveted Michelin Star is that the restaurant vying for it must have reviews from culinary critics and mentions in guides. The restaurant's overall reputation and visibility in the culinary world are essential to attract the attention of inspectors.
6- The Michelin Star Announcement:
The film shows that information spreads quickly through the media. We see the characters glued to the television or the internet (it wasn't clear to me), waiting for confirmation using the voiceover of a news anchor in a broadcast where they announce the names of the restaurants awarded Michelin Stars. I haven't seen this method in any previous film or series, and I think the director lets us know that it's an immediate and very cold process with which news is delivered that can change everyone's professional and personal lives in an instant.
5- La Crítica Culinaria:
Otro aspecto que es muy importante para lograr la anhelada Estrella Michelin, es que el restaurante que opta a ella debe tener reseñas de críticos culinarios y menciones en guías, la reputación general del restaurante y su visibilidad en el panorama gastronómico son fundamentales para atraer la atención de los inspectores.
6- El Anuncio de la Estrella Michelin:
En la película muestran que la información se propaga rápidamente a través de los medios. Vemos a los personajes pegados a la televisión o al internet (no me quedó claro), esperando la confirmación utilizando la voz en off de un presentador de noticias en una transmisión donde van diciendo los nombres de los restaurantes galardonados con las Estrellas Michelin. Este método no lo conocí en ninguna película o serie anterior, y creo que su director nos deja conocer que es un proceso inmediato y con mucha frialdad con la que se entrega una noticia que puede cambiar la vida profesional y personal de todos en un instante.
This film is from Denmark, and it has a very different pace than what we're probably used to from Hollywood productions, which are fast-paced, with twists, explosive scripts, etc. It's more deliberate and contemplative, taking its time to develop the atmosphere, delving into the characters' psychology. There's more room to see microexpressions, meaningful silences, and Carsten and Maggie's internal reactions.
It has that direction where the director believes there's less need to verbalize everything; much is communicated through non-action and even silence. Often, the camera lingers a little longer on a scene, and we can process what's happening emotionally without being constantly bombarded with new information or action. For me, it was a different experience, and if you can handle this narrative and directing quality, I assure you that you'll be able to enjoy a great story, reflect, learn about this world, and you'll learn something. To be honest, I liked this movie more the next day when I thought about it again and went over it in my mind to write this post.
Esta película es de Dinamarca, y tiene un ritmo muy diferente a las que posiblemente estamos acostumbrados con las producciones de Hollywood que son rápidas, con giros, con guiones explosivos, etc. Es más pausada y contemplativa, se toma su tiempo para desarrollar la atmósfera, profundizar en la psicología de los personajes, hay más espacio para ver las microexpresiones, los silencios cargados de significado y las reacciones internas de Carsten y Maggie.
Tiene esa dirección donde su director cree que no hay tanta necesidad de verbalizarlo todo, mucho se comunica a través de la no acción y hasta del silencio. Muchas veces la cámara se queda un poco más en una escena, y podemos procesar lo que está sucediendo emocionalmente sin ser constantemente bombardeados con nuevas informaciones o acción. Para mí fue una experiencia diferente, y si puedes con esta característica de narración y dirección, te aseguro que podrás disfrutar de una gran historia, de reflexionar, de conocer este mundo y tendrás algunos aprendizajes. Si te soy sincera, esta película me gustó más al siguiente día cuando la repensé y mientras la repasaba en mi mente para hacer este post.
