The Gamer Who Will Remind You That Human Connection Knows No Limits (Eng-Esp)

THE NEED TO BELONG

I personally felt how "The Singular Life of Ibelin" manages to go beyond the individual story of this young Mats and immerse us in a universal truth that we often underestimate: the genuine need to belong that we human beings have. I remembered studying this in high school in Caracas, during my 4th and 5th years of Humanities, with my Sociology teacher (an excellent teacher; I remember his name was Carlos Andrades).

The film is a mirror that shows us how, regardless of our origin, our age, our circumstances, or physical barriers, we all seek a place where we feel accepted, understood, and valued. In Mats's case, that place was the vast virtual world of World of Warcraft, where he found a community that allowed him to be himself, develop deep friendships, and live adventures that would have been impossible otherwise.

I'm an adult woman who no longer works for an employer like I've done all my life, and I recognize that need to belong to a group. Wherever we live, if we're no longer working, we want to have a religious group, an extra activity like exercising or crafts, or HIVE, of course. But we always want to belong, to feel like we're part of something. And young people also have that need, even more so than older people. And if, like Mats, they have a physical disability that limits their options for belonging to a group, video games are an option. Although they pose a danger and we must be vigilant about their safety, it's perfectly valid for them to be able to channel this need through these digital media.

LA NECESIDAD DE PERTENECER

Personalmente sentí cómo "La Singular Vida de Ibelin" logra ir más allá de la historia individual de este joven Mats y sumergirnos en una verdad universal que a menudo subestimamos, la genuina necesidad de pertenecer que tenemos los seres humanos. Recordé cuando estudié sobre esto en el liceo en Caracas, durante 4to y 5to año de Humanidades, con mi profesor de Sociología (excelente profesor, recuerdo que se llamaba Carlos Andrades).

La película es un espejo que nos muestra cómo sin importar nuestro origen, nuestra edad, nuestras circunstancias o las barreras físicas, todos buscamos un lugar donde sentirnos aceptados, comprendidos y valorados. En el caso de Mats, ese lugar fue el vasto mundo virtual de World of Warcraft, donde encontró una comunidad que le permitió ser él mismo, desarrollar amistades profundas y vivir aventuras que de otra forma le hubieran sido imposibles.

Soy una mujer adulta que ya no trabajo para un patrono como lo hice toda mi vida, y reconozco esa necesidad de pertenecer a un grupo, donde vivimos, si ya no trabajamos queremos tener un grupo de religión, una actividad extra como hacer ejercicios o manualidades, o HIVE por supuesto; pero siempre queremos pertenecer, sentir que formamos parte de algo. Y los jóvenes también tienen esa necesidad, incluso más grande que las personas mayores, y si como Mats tienen una limitación física que a su vez le limita sus opciones de pertenecer a un grupo, pues los video juegos son una opción, aunque suponen un peligro y hay que estar pendientes de su seguridad, es totalmente válido que logren canalizar esta necesidad en esos medios digitales.
