The American Student (United States)
And here we go!
SOME ASPECTS OF TEACHING AT A NEW YORK STATE MIDDLE SCHOOL—2007
Reflecting on my experiences as a teacher in a New York State middle school in 2007, I can truly appreciate the unique aspects of the American educational system. This was my first encounter with this system, and it was a journey filled with learning and adaptation.
One of the most striking elements of teaching in this environment was the emphasis on fostering creativity among students. Engaging students in activities where they could create something tangible—be it through art projects or hands-on assignments—was particularly effective. This approach was not limited to foreign language classes; it spanned all subjects, showcasing the universal appeal of creative learning.
The schools were well-equipped with a variety of materials that facilitated diverse classroom activities. From colourful sheets of paper to scissors and glue, these resources allowed for an enriching educational experience.
Additionally, the integration of technology into the classroom transformed traditional teaching methods into a more interactive sessions. Gone were the days of relying solely on markers and erasers; the electronic whiteboard became an essential tool in our teaching arsenal. While mastering the basics of this technology was relatively straightforward, it took me several months to fully harness its potential for creative lesson planning. Until I arrive to execute activities making looks like magic steps in some moments.

As a foreign language teacher, one of my primary challenges was to simplify complex concepts for my students. I quickly learned that if lessons were overly complicated, students might perceive them as torturous rather than educational. This realization reinforced the importance of creativity in the classroom.
I vividly remember observing a science class where the teacher had brought thermometers for each student. As she carefully immersed them in boiling water, the students watched in awe as the thermometers reacted to the heat. Although I initially found it risky to use boiling water in a classroom setting, the sheer wonder on the children's faces made the experience worthwhile. Moments like these exemplified the power of hands-on learning and the joy of discovery.
That's all for now!
