Hong Kong Stocks Edge Higher Amid Improved US-China Trade Sentiment
Hong Kong stocks closed modestly higher on Friday, boosted by renewed optimism surrounding US-China trade relations following high-level diplomatic talks.
The Hang Seng Index rose 111.20 points, or 0.5%, to 24,139.57, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index gained 19.30 points, or 0.2%, closing at 8,687.56.
The positive momentum came after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held his first in-person talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting marked a key step in easing tensions between the world’s two largest economies, sparking hope for improved bilateral trade relations.
Speculation of a potential meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping before the end of the year further buoyed investor sentiment. Last week, a senior Chinese official also expressed optimism about the future of US-China relations, adding to the cautious upbeat tone in the markets.
Market Movers
WuXi AppTec (603259) was a standout performer, surging 10% after forecasting a 102% year-over-year increase in first-half profit — a strong signal of growth in the biotech sector.
On the flip side, ImmuneOnco Biopharmaceuticals (1541) fell over 11%, despite the company denying any undisclosed developments behind the sharp stock movement, leaving investors puzzled.
Outlook
While the broader market moved cautiously higher, attention remains on geopolitical developments and corporate earnings as key drivers of investor confidence. The latest diplomatic engagement between US and Chinese officials may not mark a breakthrough, but it signals a step in the right direction for stabilizing one of the most critical economic relationships in global markets.
