Where Are the Good Old Days?
In one of the stations, I noticed an advertisement for a theater play titled "Where Are the Good Old Days?" The phrase resonates deeply, stirring a whirlwind of thoughts within me, ranging from nostalgia to historical reflection. I find myself pondering:
“Yes, where are the good days?” As I read the words again—“…good old days, where are the good old days?”—the questions multiply.
Looking back, I realize there are many "good days" in my past. I am pretty sure for everyone. Which ones truly deserve the title of "good old days"? Should I reflect on the memories of three or four years ago?
Or perhaps the cherished moments from my university days as a student? My various experiences teaching languages also come to mind. I surmise that the essence of the good old days resides within me, woven into the fabric of my life since the very beginning.
Each good day, like an atomic particle, contributes to the foundation that has allowed me to take the next step forward.
Before and after technology influence
On the other hand, one could consider the old days before the overwhelming influence of technology, when time seemed to stretch and the good days aged slowly. For instance, I completed my bachelor's degree in five years. Years later, institution's administrators began proposing accelerated programs, suggesting that students could shorten their studies by enrolling in summer courses—a move that, while beneficial for students, also increased revenue for the faculty. Into myself I was disappointed for that new tendency to shorter Semesters for Summer; later as consequence, there was not anymore semester but quatri-mester as a need to adequate better the mentioned summer courses.
Now, it seems that good days age at a breakneck pace. Each day brings forth a new innovation, heralding a promise to transform our lives irrevocably. Yet, what we often fail to recognize is that our lives have already been altered; we simply have not yet acclimated our minds to these relentless changes.
Perhaps the administrators of education, driven by political motivations, are onto something when they advocate for a faster approach to learning. For instance, imagine a bachelor’s degree completed in a single year, fueled by the rapid absorption of knowledge about or from artificial intelligence. But are the brains of new generations truly prepared for this accelerated existence, brimming with unknown challenges?
Conclusion
In conclusion, the quest for the "good old days" invites us to reflect not only on our past but also on the present and future. While nostalgia may color our memories, we must also confront the reality of a world that is evolving at an unprecedented pace.
The challenge lies in finding a balance between cherishing the past and embracing the present, as we navigate the complexities of an ever-changing landscape.
(Note that I didn't watch the play, the title was a good excuse to write this post and took the picture before the train arrived and erased it from my eyes).
