For virtually my entire professional life, I've been a freelancer. In fact, I only have one month of post-university work experience in a registered institution, if you exclude NYSC.
Prior to finishing university, I worked in a bunch of places including logistics, and laptop repairs, and maintenance but none of it was in an official capacity, so I don't have the "papers" to back it.
For what it's worth, I consider myself competent enough to work in various capacities and I'm a fast learner, so I can adjust to new technology and whatnot.
In the last three months, I even shelved doing freelance writing jobs because the stress isn't equivalent to the amount of money I earn. So in essence, I've depended entirely on crypto earnings since then and it's going to be that way for as long as I'm in Nigeria.
No crypto documentation
The problem with the system is that there's little or no documentation with regard to crypto activities. In fact, other than when you're registering for a Central exchange, there's actually nothing else that requires any form of documentation.
This sort of makes it difficult for someone like me to switch to the "corporate world". Virtually all my qualifications and proof of talent/work are based on trust; You have to trust that the links and copies of the word document I send as my applications are real.
For what it's worth, the results haven't been too bad. When I still did freelance work on Fiverr, I use to pitch some clients with my other jobs and they liked it enough to use my service.
Outside Fiverr though, job recruiters haven't entirely been too open to the idea of taking me on. Locally, I'm glad I didn't get employed because it enabled me to explore other opportunities and I'm pleased to say that I earn far more than I'd have made from a salary in Nigeria.
The problem
So the problem is that I'm starting to search for job opportunities in other countries because that's a nice way to migrate. It's a completely new position to be in and despite all the experience and quality I have, I often feel disadvantaged because of my lack of official documentation.
I know I should be buoyed by the fact that I've actually worked for clients in countries like Australia, USA, UK, Canada and many others but again, there's no paper work to prove it. I keep asking myself why someone should employ me and invite me to their country simply based on the fact that I told them I wrote an article.
Perhaps I shouldn't be too negative, but this feeling is just based on the number of times I've been rejected. It sort of makes me feel downcast whenever I think of getting employed.
Sadly though, for now at least, there's no way around it. My current source of income is global, so I and my family could afford the basics in some other countries but crypto has no documentation and I don't think it's something I can depend on, especially when I just get to a new country; thus the job.
Y'all got jobs?
Right now, I'm open to jobs that don't necessarily need qualifications. I and my wife are both open to working and between the two of us, there's the capacity to work in a variety of fields.
For me, it's about settling in, finding our feet, and then working our way up from there. It doesn't have to be white-collar or glamorous, just something to get by while we sort ourselves out. Are there jobs like that available in your country?
