Majorana, das klingt eher nach einer neuen Gewürzmischung als nach Tranistor oder Quantencomputer. Aber die Meldung hat Pfeffer in sich.
Microsoft hat mit dem Majorana 1 einen neuen Quantenprozessor vorgestellt, der in wenigen Jahren die Basis enorm leistungsfähiger Quantencomputer darstellen soll. Mit diesen könnten wissenschaftliche und medizinische Probleme, deren Berechnungen mit herkömmlichen Computern Jahre dauern würden, innerhalb deutlich kürzerer Zeit gelöst werden. Microsoft will dies anhand neuer Materialien und einer neuen Architektur schaffen. Der neue Chip basiert auf topologischen Qubits, die den Kern von Quantencomputern darstellen.
Wenn das realisierbar ist, was sich Microsoft da von ihren Forschungen verspricht, dann wäre das sicher ein Quantensprung. Das wäre dann wirklich vergleichbar mit der Erfindung des Tranistors im vergangenen Jahrhundert. Aber von der Erfindung des ersten Transistors bis zum ersten Großrechner oder gar zum PC vergingen auch noch Jahre bzw. Jahrzehnte.
Das Entwicklungstempo hat sich allerdings in der Zwischenzeit beschleunigt und Microsoft ist ein Konzern mit dem nötigen Kleingeld um diese Entwicklung voranzutreiben.
Mit solchen Quantencomputern könnten dann wissenschaftliche Berechnungen in wesentlich kürzerer Zeit durchgeführt werden, als dies heute noch der Fall ist. Auch in der Medizin oder der allgemeinen Forschung gibt es viele Problemstellungen und Anwendungen, die von so einem Quantencomputer massiv profitieren würden.
Für die Kryptobranche würde es aber bedeuten, dass die bisherigen Verschlüsselungen auf ein neues Niveau angehoben werden müssten.
Es bleibt also spannend, nicht nur mit KI, Krypto sondern eben auch mit der Quantentechnik.
