I first heard about Bitcoin while doing research on the financial system back in the early 2010s. Like most people, I didn't take it seriously at first. Rather than digging deeper into the tech, I continued to stack silver in preparation for the inflation resulting from QE/ZIRP.
Years later, after hearing about Bitcoin multiple times, I finally decided to set aside some days to go down the rabbit hole. Bitcoin seemed like an amazing idea, so I decided to dip my toes in. At the same time, Ethereum was starting to capture people's attention, but I ignored it as well.
Initial Rejection
Why do most people dismiss cryptocurrencies at first?
Bitcoin combines everything you don't know about computer science, with everything you don't know about money.
I forget who originally said that, but it explains why most of us dismiss crypto at first. It's just too difficult to understand, and without a background in technology or finance, Bitcoin becomes even harder to grasp.
Unlike gold, which has been around for millennia, Bitcoin is a new concept that never existed before in our history. Recognizing crypto as a form of money requires you to free your mind beyond existing ideas, and set aside your emotions too.
Different from the television or the smartphone for example, we tend to get emotional when it comes to financial innovations. Compared to other technological revolutions, a combination of fear, greed, and hate has delayed the adoption of cryptocurrencies.
Mainstream Acceptance
All that said, the mainstream embrace of cryptocurrencies has been constantly progressing ever since Bitcoin's release in 2009. When I talk to family and friends who still watch the news, the trend towards widespread acceptance becomes evident.
Before 2017, the mainstream media practically ignored Bitcoin, if they were not outright ridiculing it or laughing at it.
Now, in the year 2025, Bitcoin has a prominent ticker on the major business channels. A place for Ethereum was added soon after.
Mainstream financial news stations are now having guests on who talk about Solana, which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
The trend is clear, and we are still very early in this financial revolution.
Until next time...
We are witnessing the mainstream acceptance of cryptocurrency in real-time, and it won't be long before this technology has been fully adopted in society, like the television or the smartphone.
People see the price of Bitcoin at $19,000, $69,000, or its most recent all-time high of $111,000 and think they missed the boat. The truth is, opportunities in crypto still abound, and probably will for another decade or two.
Crypto is like a wave in the ocean that is just starting to gain momentum. There is still plenty of time to position yourself in front of the wave before it catches you and pulls you into the future.
