Hey Jessiemployees
As we continue another year of lockdowns and social distancing, companies dependency on remote work has hit all-time highs. Vaccines have rolled out across the globe, and the efficacy of it remains to be seen with reports of variants on the way. I am not too concerned about the accuracy of these claims; I am only looking at the trends it's driving.
Despite where you stand on the side of COVID, or Vaccines, we can't deny that remote work and working on the internet has become more practical. Companies and staff have been forced to adapt, and we even see companies claim they will remain remote post lockdowns.
The trend towards gig work and nomadic work, where you leverage your skills when YOU want and from where YOU want, is growing. Even before the pandemic years, we saw studies from 2018 claim that by 2027 50% of US workers would be remote jobs.
Remote work becoming a richer medium
I think that these lockdowns have only accelerated the trend and brought progress forward by a few more years. What was 2027 will be sooner, and with that, speeding up in timelines comes new opportunities.
We've already seen concerts by Lady Gaga, and Marshmello takes place on Fortnite; this is an example of someone taking a job they do in real life and moving it online in a new medium.
While podcasting and streaming video and video conferencing form a bridge between the physical and digital world, others are going even further with the concept.
I recently saw that Decentraland was hiding real-world staff to work in their Casino. That's right; this blockchain-based second life build on Ethereum will be accepting job applicants where instead of bots working in the virtual casino, you'll be interacting with real people.
This is an example of creating new jobs where there was none, and it's all based on skill instead of location. I don't need to move to Decentraland; I compete against everyone in the world with an internet connection. This means the city gets the most affordable yet skilled labour, and the customers benefit from it.
These virtual workers can earn an additional income or primary income for their virtual work and even build a career in this field with real work experience.
The virtual reality economy
This really got me thinking about the host of applications for this technology. I mean, with cinemas taking a huge hit and streaming becoming the go-to for entertainment. Why would it be so crazy to have digital premiers on Netflix.
Instead of going to the cinema, you sign up with your digital premier, attend via your VR, chat to other filmgoers before and after and enjoy a digital version of what we've done in the past.
I could definitely see things like this coming in the not too distant future.
NFT Gallery
I recently took a pretty big shot at NFT's, but I could see a way they could be added to the virtual world. Perhaps one day in Decentraland, for example, we'll have digital art galleries, where people can pay to view art; the art brings in an income.
This, to me, would be an asset, and then it could be tradable, so if the entry fees kick-off, let's say, a 1% APR for owning the NFT hosted in a specific gallery, then I would see a reason to own something like this.
These are just a few of the implementations, and I am sure there are millions more. If Decentralands decentralised casino is a success, we'll see plenty of others trying to spin up something similar.
Have your say
