I've been following this new tech bro erection-inducing jargon known as the metaverse, and I really don't buy into it. Call me a meat verse maximalist but I prefer to deal with the meat bag I was given to explore the world.
Sitting at home with a box on my face so I can fool myself into thinking pixelated characters can replace real-life seems like such a joke, but people really take it seriously like it's the future.
Sure I get that this could be the stepping stone to dematerializing your body and uploading your consciousness to a server to live in cyberspace but we're far from reality like that, and this metaverse thing just seems overblown.
When I hear people shill things like the metaverse and DAOs I just feel like they have lost touch with reality and think that unenforceable code can really dictate human behavior.
It just seems naive.
Oh but Mark Wuzzaberg be metaversing? lol and? Fuck out here with that fiat billionaire bullshit. Normies will really praise any turd that comes out of a billionaire's mouth and call it genius.
Bitcoin maxi augmented reality
Recently a Bitcoin-focused company has tried to co-opt the metaverse, the Fold App. In a recent press release Fold announced that it's upgrading its app which is a rewards card program and I am torn.
I really liked their current offering and while I get the sense of hoping on trends, I'm just not convinced that it's the right move for them. Especially considering the fact that the current products aren't even available gloablly. You'd think you'd be focusing on expanding your market before creating gimmics.
I could be proven wrong and in fact, I hope I am.
Finding wild satoshis
The idea for the game is to take the concept popularised by pokemon Go, using your phone and AR to get people out and about.
Instead of looking for Pokemon that mean nothing, you can collect Satoshis and get paid to explore your local area. It could be a great way to bring a new generation into Bitcoin and start orange-pilling people.
Apparently, players are out looking for Bitcoin, there will also be poison pills and “shitcoins” amid bitcoins that will take away from the player’s earnings in the game.
To access the game, players need only open the “Play” tab in the Fold App and then simply go about exploring real-world locations for bitcoin.

Why I'm not sold on Fold
Fold is partnering up with Niantic, the company that created Pokemon Go, Fold. Niantic may be the leader in augmented reality but it also has a pretty shady reputation and has close ties with Google.
While I think it's a cool concept it's not without its issues, I am not a fan of handing over data to companies, and giving apps permission to my camera and geolocation seems like a stretch I'd pass on.
If they can indicate that all data is encrypted with zero-knowledge proofs and is only aggregated data and not personal data it may help but the best would be to allow opt-out of data collection.
If not, then this app is just another data harvesting operation they can use to sell on to third parties and make huge somes of money on data while giving you sats to run around in your area.
To some, it may be a worthwhile trade-off, to others it may be a hard no.
Also, players can be co-opted with incentives, like let's say McDonald's dumps a bunch of sats in the game, all-around restaurant locations. You're bound to end up there to collect the sats only to spend them or spend money on industrial waste products they call food.
You can sign up for early release and find more info on the game here
