🚨 Trading and Withdrawals Paused on Backpack: What Happened?

Recently, the centralized exchange Backpack, which runs on a private blockchain, experienced a temporary pause in trading and withdrawals. During the deployment of a code update on a single node, a mismatch between validators occurred, forcing the system to halt activity in order to ensure all nodes were properly aligned. The team quickly:
- Paused all operations to protect users
- Rolled back the non-distributed code
- Replayed transactions
- Re-synced the state of all nodes
💡 User funds were never at risk.
This very architecture, where every operation is signed and traceable, made it possible to pinpoint the issue, fix it quickly, and remain fully transparent — something most traditional exchanges would struggle to offer.
🛠️ The July 3 Technical Halt
Backpack suspended trading and withdrawals for about two hours following scheduled maintenance. Upon restart, some accounts showed reversed orders and incorrect balances. CEO Armani Ferrante called it a “programming error,” immediately announced an internal audit, and promised full reimbursement for any losses, stressing that the custody infrastructure was never affected.
🔒 Why the Issue Was Contained
Every action on Backpack (deposits, trades, withdrawals) is signed and reconciled in real-time on a private blockchain. The moment nodes fell out of sync, a built-in kill switch froze the platform until all validators were once again aligned. The same architecture that triggered the bug also enabled fast tracking and restoration, all without touching user funds.

Di recente l’exchange centralizzato Backpack, basato su una blockchain privata, ha subito un’interruzione temporanea di trading e prelievi. Durante il deploy di un aggiornamento su un singolo nodo, si è verificata una discrepanza tra i validatori, costringendo il sistema a fermarsi per riallineare correttamente tutti i nodi. Il team ha agito subito:
- Pausa totale per proteggere gli utenti
- Rollback del codice non distribuito
- Replay delle transazioni

🛠️ L’Interruzione Tecnica del 3 Luglio
Backpack ha sospeso trading e prelievi per circa due ore dopo una manutenzione programmata. Al riavvio, alcuni account presentavano ordini invertiti e saldi errati. Il CEO Armani Ferrante ha parlato di un “errore di programmazione”, annunciando subito un audit interno e il rimborso totale di eventuali perdite, precisando che l’infrastruttura di custodia non è mai stata compromessa.
🔒 Perché il Problema è Stato Contenuto
Ogni azione su Backpack (depositi, trading, prelievi) è firmata e riconciliata in tempo reale su una blockchain privata. Non appena i nodi sono andati fuori sync, un kill switch automatico ha congelato la piattaforma fino a riallineamento completo. La stessa architettura che ha generato il bug ha permesso anche una risoluzione veloce — senza toccare i fondi degli utenti.
