In a reference to this post I like to think I had the economic repercussions of installing the wrong people in power in the Nigerian system.
PS: It hasn't worked out as I though it would, and while people seem to be celebrating tribal bigotry, I'm here, thinking about the future of crypto and tech in Nigeria, and if this wouldn't be the beginning of further cancellation for crypto and tech in Nigeria.
Recently, the general elections in Nigeria have come and gone and irrespective of the outcome, it's visible to see the crooked mentality of many people through their choices and the reason behind these choices.
So many people have lost friends and acquaintances because of their differences in the choice or belief of the right candidate and this is coming from a place of loyalty, in an attempt to rebuild Nigeria.
You see, some people want a new, better, and different Nigeria and they don't mind if they lose friends and acquaintances. You don't see things like this in other places.
A System Of Check & Balance
This is because, in other places, people would never check their friends for disloyalty, greed, wickedness, or contempt. After all, these people are their friends.
This is the beginning of corruption. Some people display undying loyalty to their acquaintances even if the behavior of these people is questionable and needs to be checked, but because they've done us some good favors in the past, we overlook these tendencies they show. Nigeria seems to have passed this stage.
I've seen people calling out their friends, colleagues, and families who seem to support the wrong people, they did so knowing their relationships with them would be ruined, but they went ahead anyway, and the reason is their altruistic commitment, towards the betterment of Nigeria.
It's true that so many people have stood up to bad governance,
.....but they're still so few compared to the number of people who have been compromised by bad governance. Now, this small population is doing all it takes to change those who have been compromised and redundant in their mentality and behavior, but it has generally resulted in chaos, verbal wars, anger, cyber disagreement, and threats. The reason it got to this is that many people have lost their cool for this bad government.
Their frustration has led to them choosing haste and impoliteness in their bid to enlighten others about the need to rise above tribalism, bigotry, and religion in their selection of leaders for the country.
The Major Tool For Control
But I've come to see that some people would choose their ego, rather than choosing selfless change for overall betterment. I saw some Hausas online who were just satisfied to never see an Igbo president as the main reason for making contrary choices. The derivation of joy from the disappointment of others is far better than the need to truly change Nigeria in their opinion.
This is the height of wickedness, but the truth is that some of these people are living in abject poverty, unwilling to allow the positive influence of change to enlighten them. Nigeria is a representation of the web, be it two or three. When you look at most of these narratives, you'll tend to understand.
This is why I've come to believe that anyone who can survive Nigeria can survive any space, either spatial, geographical, or online. Now irrespective of the results, it's obvious the elections have been rigged. The majority have chosen their loyalty towards tribe and money over what is feasible and the people who have done otherwise have remained in the minority.
In Conclusion
One of the things I choose to do instead of showing worded or physical grievances is to remove my loyalty and patriotism to those who have chosen to make the wrong choice
I have a friend who sells cars, and due to his tribalistic nature, he made the wrong choice. Now instead of checking him verbally, what I'll do is never give him any referrals or patronize his business ever again. I think this is an even better way to register grievances.
There are things we'd do online and offline and we're forever on the losing side, despite not being wrong, we cannot change people.
One thing I'll say is that if you've mastered how to survive in Nigeria, you'll be able to survive any social space.
