These financial products have recorded multi-billion dollar net inflows in three months, significantly altering the outlook for Bitcoin as an asset.
The chart below shows how inflows since last January 11, when the funds were issued, to date amount to $11.957 billion.
The list of ETFs with the largest amount of Bitcoins accumulated so far is topped by IBIT, the fund of asset manager BlackRock with 235,028 BTc.
BlackRock's Bitcoin fund is the fastest to reach the $10 billion market cap in history.
As long as this pace continues, demand for Bitcoin from ETFs will continue to put upward pressure on the price. It is worth noting that the presence of these funds was not present in previous bull cycles, which makes all the difference.
This is because, unlike futures ETFs, spot ETFs are backed by the underlying asset (in this case, Bitcoin). Therefore, the issuers of these ETFs must buy BTC to back them. This, by the simple law of supply and demand, drives the price up.
With institutional investors entering ETFs en masse, the exchange believes it is possible that Bitcoin's response to the next halving will not necessarily mirror its performance in previous cycles, so further price appreciation will be necessary to balance supply and demand dynamics.
