I saw this challenge from the Leofinance community and I thought I had to take the challenge even though I hardly visit the market place since recently because we do buy our stuffs in bulk at home. The opportunity came, my sister and I had to visit the market place and get food stuffs to prepare soup.
And I thought it was a perfect timing to enter for this contest so here is my entry.
HBD, the popular and amazing stable coin is worth a lot in my locality as our fiat currency had lost it's value. Converting 1 HBD to my country's fiat currency (naira) will give me about N580 which is a bit high compared to some analysis I've read from others.
Depending on the value of HBD in each country, I guess there is almost none without the problem of inflation but there are some items that are always cheap to get in any country, most of which are items we need little of it or rarely buy.
Here is a breakdown of the value of HBD in stuffs I frequently spend money on and some that I rarely spend money on but need them once in a while.
Buying Food Items in HBD value
Yeah, I visited the market yesterday so you could be rest assured that I'm giving an almost exact price if not exact, of things in my hometown.
We decided to prepare our favourite local food (Banga soup) so these are the stuffs we bought at the market and their prices.
We bought two medium measurable container of the palm fruits for 2 HBD (N1000) that is almost 1 HBD higher than the former price of the same container. The seller kept complaining about how the prices of palm fruits have gone up, we bought from her after conforming from other sellers that it was the same price though.
You won't believe how shocked I was to hear the price of one of these cat fishes 😅 I actually thought one would be 2 HBD at most since it had been long I bought them but the seller gave another epistle of how the price of things have been on the increase, we bought one of those fishes for about 4 HBD. They are my favourite kind of fish so I had to go ahead to buy.
I didn't remember to take picture of the quantity I bought but the these are costly now compared to the last time I visited, I got a small chunk of it for 2 HBD with a small cup of the fresh periwinkle for almost 1 HBD. They are my regular buy so I always know when the price are favourable or not.
If there is one food item that's cheap in our market now is Onion, as big as they are, I got a dozen for less than 1 HBD unlike before where I have to spend up to 3 HBD to get two dozens of small sized onions.
Buying stuffs for wardrobe in HBD value
Before now, I would depend totally on mum to get me a new wear for my wardrobe and that is because I hear of how expensive it can be to get a nice wear over here. I still don't know how mum gets some really affordable wears for me, I just appreciate her and start wearing them.
But I started earning and I thought of buying my wears with my own money sometimes, the thought of the high inflation on wears in my area didn't keep me from trying. Thank goodness I was able to explore the market with my sister.
I found a thrift store that sells beautiful wears for very affordable amount. I'm not saying I won't buy clothes from boutiques but why go there when I can only afford little for now. And I get to see variety of good wears at thrift stores. The gown you see on me in the picture was bought for 2 HBD, trust me, you will get that same gown at a boutique for more than 5 HBD.
Taking transportation in HBD value
Using the train transport system isn't just my favourite because of it's speed and security, it's also my favourite because of how cheap it is compared to using a vehicle.
But I can't visit every destination of my choice with the train so I do use the vehicle system most times. The inflation of transport price happens when the price of fuel is high and trust the transport personnel to add more increase to the price.
I frequent Edo state from my state (A 3 - 4 hours journey) and it costs 4 HBD using train, 7 HBD using a vehicle... Did you see the huge difference? And the train is way more comfortable so trust me to prefer using train for movements I could use the train.
Some things 10 HBD can get in my hometown now
There are many other things but these are some of those things I got within the range of 10 HBD. 10 HBD will give a total of N5000 - N6000 and this amount is more than enough to get me my body cream, perfume and some snacks. I can also get some jewelries within 10 HBD but that is because I know places that sells cheap.
I can also get my hair done with less than 10 HBD, well, a weavon less hair style because weavons are on the high increase now and 10 HBD won't get me good ones.
The value of 100 HBD in my hometown
No, I got my new phone for about 200 HBD actually but there are other good phones one can get with 100 HBD. School fees, house rents, a few house appliances and some other stuffs can be bought with less than 100 HBD but I'll say the amount is limiting to so many other things people need to buy.
Making budget - If I have 50 HBD instead of 20 HBD for the week...
I'm not on of those who sticks to budget but if I have to, I know exactly what to do. I research for where to get items cheaper and still same items, buy from these places instead of spending too much to get a few things.
How much salary in HBD my family would need to live a comfortable life in my hometown?
300 HBD to 400 HBD monthly would go a long way in giving my family a comfortable life, no hurt if it would be more than that... We would just need to get more stuffs then 😅
I can keep writing but I would like to stop here. I hope I've been able to give a glimpse of how the price of things are in my hometown.
Thanks for reading!!!
