I wrote a post earlier today about my joining steemit and how much chess played a role. What I didn't say was that chess wasn't the reason I joined steemit. It was the bug rewards for open source project by @utopian-io that got my friend's attention and led me to the platform. I felt getting money for reporting bugs was pretty cool. I tried a couple of times untill I finally hit it big in this post.
Error in Indicating Checkmated King While Watching.
For me, at 17, in my second year in the university, it was big deal making money that easy. I stayed and ended up trying a few more times. But beyond money, even when my bugs weren't rewarded, I felt like it was a genuine way to contribute to something I used and valued - I played chess everyday then on lichess.org and it is an open source app - so it's a win-win situation!
Back then, @utopian-io was a big deal for me. It provided a way people can contribute to open source projects and earn. Developers, writers and almost everyone involved gets to benefit from their contributions. Whether you suggested bugs or fixed the bugs, it doesn't matter, you get rewarded. Utopian.io is long gone, but its impact remains.
Today, I came across Leofinance’s post about open-sourcing their one-click onboarding tech for Hive. While I think it's a great initiative, it reminded me of my early days on chain where I could contribute to open source projects and from @khaleelkazi's words on threads you can see that this is just one part of a bigger vision for leo. But it's got me thinking, what if @leofinance or any Hive based project find a way to reward open source contributions just like utopian did or even better.
Open source thrives on contributions from everyone, not just developers or coders. Bug reporters like me and also many Hive users feedbacks are all valuable. Maybe Leofinance has something like this, I don't know. But with Hive built rewards system, it feels like the right way to go.
I personally would vote for this proposal and keep my fingers crossed.
