It’s been a while since I shared any behind the scenes of my Midjourney explorations. They recently added inpainting to Midjourney and I’ve been playing with it some. I find so far it’s often hit and miss getting results but it’s worth the effort.
Midjourney Inpainting Adventure
The other day when I was doing my Word of the Day image I was using inpainting and surprised myself with the results. The word of the day was gratitude. I decided to use the symbolism of open hands, sunrise and heart. I like using doodle for a drawing style. With this prompt:
surreal doodle, front of two hands holding a heart, background of a sunrise, multilayered realism, --s 200
I got this image:
I decided I wanted to add a soft pink flower to the center of the heart representing love, appreciation and growth. After some playing I finally got this image:
That was an interesting image. I’d decided I’d try something I’d read about recently. I opened “Vary region” and selected the whole image to inpaint. I didn’t think that through to well. I ended up with the image of a soft pink flower. I did it again, this time using the original prompt. I ended up with this image:
Woah, now that was a cool result. I liked it but my flower was gone. Back to the inpainting, I used this prompt:
surreal doodle, delicate soft pastel pink rosebud, multilayered realism, --s 200
And got this image which I used in my post:
Playing With Styles
Next I thought I’d play with some styles and see what effect they have. To get myself a base image I used the link to the previous image in this prompt:
zendoodle, https://s.mj.run/wI8T6mvYyeg --s 1000
Using the seed value I then started adding styles before ‘zendoodle’. Here are the results:
Surreal
Art Deco Poster
Manga Character
Watercolor Seascape
Prehistoric Cave Painting
Graffiti Street Scene
Contemporary Abstract
Pointillism Still Life
Neo - Pop
Cinema Poster
Mosaic Art
Cyberpunk
Zen Sumi - E
Bauhaus
Stippling
There is just a sampling of styles you can use. There are many many styles you can use, never be afraid to experiment with terms you want to test out. That’s one of the beauties of Midjourney or any of the generative art engines. You get to play and learn.
I’ve not even played with textures on the image. I’ve used them combined with styles at times to create some interesting images.
Be adventurous and have fun.
