This post is part of a series I’m building to help beginners on Hive learn the basics. My goal is to help you to get a base to build on your time on the platform.

In Part 1 I talked about getting an account and the first basic steps and concepts to understand.
In Part 2 I continued to build on the concepts and terms used on the blockchain. This part talks about frontends, communities and the peakd profile page.
In Part 3 I talked about managing expectations, how voting works and the rewards.
In Part 4 I focused more on the building a following, content and posting.
Today we’re going to take a look at an array of communities currently on the platform and ways of finding them.
It’s important to note, on a Web3 platform like Hive, there’s no algorithm deciding what to show you. The feed you see reflects posts from people you’re following.
There are some filters you can use to determine the order you’ll see on the feed page.
When you click on the filter button a menu pops open to let you remove content you’ve already voted on or reblogs people you follow have done.
You can also see the list according to people you have favourited or put on a list you created.
Note, the operable words here are actions you’ve taken to determine what you will see.
The icons to the right of the Filters icon will allow you to select different views of the feed page.
If you haven’t started following anyone, use the Explore menu at the top of the page to find some feeds to explore.
When you’re looking at a feed page in the top right of a post you’ll see either a green or gray tag. The grey tags are topic tags like I talked about yesterday.
You can find some interesting posts in topic tags. Keep in mind, there is no moderation on them. You can also find irrelevant content.
Communities
The green tags are posts in Communities and they can be moderated depending on the rules that have been set. There are communities on a wide range of topics on Hive. Some are very active. Explore ones that interest you and subscribe to ones that interest you.
Let’s Have A Look At Communities
With almost 13,000 subscribers this is one of the busier communities. It also has a frontend you can log into with your Hive account. When I introduce Hive based tokens, this is one of them you will learn about.
LeoFinance is focused on crypto and finance posts. Blogging in this community is just one activity you can participate in. There is much more you can do .. Check out their FAQ here https://leopedia.io/faq
Another popular communties with over 11,000 subscribers. It’s focused on food, friends and of course passion for the delights of food. They also have their own frontend and token. This is a community that will only accept original content. If you enjoy cooking and sharing what you’ve cooked, you’d enjoy this community.
Photography on a platform like Hive can be challenging. Not because there are not great photographers here. The challenge is it’s a target for spam posts. If you’re not sharing your own shots this community doesn’t want to see your posts.
So many spammers grab photos from other places and put them into a post looking to gain rewards it’s made it hard for people who take the art of photography seriously to find a place. This community has accomplished it.
Are you a musician or love music? This community would be a place for you. Each week there is a new event, the most recent at this writing is “Brave Mind”. The idea is for musicians to produce their song, create a video to post and share with others.
Scholar and Scribe
This is one of the newer communities while small has been producing some very nice creative writing content. It accepts content from a range of the craft including poetry, song writing, short stories, freewriting etc.
The community does require a beneficiary, something I’ve not previously touched on. A beneficiary is a percentage of each post going to the community. I’ll talk about them in a future post.
This is a community focused on women but doesn’t exclude men. Their mission is “to empower and encourage female/feminine/femme-identifying voices on Hive.” You can see a fuller description their page. The group runs a weekly posting contest feating two questions. Participants can answer one or both in their post.
Wednesday Walk
This community of over 2,000 grew out of a challenge by @tattooedjay, one of the excellent photographers on the platform. The challenge is to get out for a walk, take some pictures of your surroundings and then write a post about it. It doesn’t have to be on Wednesday but posting it then is asked. I’ve seen some great posts on this topic.
Thoughtfuldailypost
This community also grew from a challenge put forward by @wesphilbin to post something positive, uplifting, inspirational, reflective. You can participate daily or you can do so when the spirit moves you. It’s up to you.
As you can see, I’ve only scratched the surface of what is available in communities on Hive. Take a look around, explore posts, watch the green tags and I have no doubt you’ll find an active community that meets your interest.
If you don’t, start posting on the topic and build a following of like-minded Hivians. As I was writing this I received a DM from someone who was about to start their own community.
