Welcome to this second article where I'm going to present you a documentary available on Netflix.
Today we will talk about the environmentalist documentary Cowspiracy - The Sustainability Secret

What is the documentary about?
After much research on the impact of animal exploitation on the environment, Kip Andersen realizes that despite the consequences, environmental groups do not talk about it or talk about it very little.
So he tried to contact these groups to find out why. According to a 2006 U.N. study, CO2 emissions from animal exploitation are much higher than those of the entire transport industry (cars, boats, planes, etc.), mainly due to animal flatulence, which contains methane, a gas that is much more polluting than carbon dioxide.
Why, then, don't GreenPeace, Climate Reality and other associations publish this information on their websites?
In addition to producing greenhouse gases, animal exploitation consumes an unimaginable amount of water compared to other sectors such as hydraulic fracturing (382 times more in 2011).
Kip tried to contact GreenPeace but they refused to give him an interview. For the other associations, they simply avoid the subject.
Animal exploitation has destroyed more than 70% of the Amazon forest.
The reason of the avoidance of this subject? The animal exploitation lobby. This lobby had many people executed who wanted to alert the populations, especially in Brazil where the fight is raging.
The power of this lobby is so impressive that the group that was supposed to finance the film has cancelled the provision of the necessary funds for its production.
In the second part of this documentary, Kip Andersen went to sustainable farms. As he studied their operations, he found out that they were not sustainable after all. More hectares and time are needed to produce less product.
The main problem is simply the overconsumption of animal products (meat, cheese, ...). With a population growing exponentially and expected to reach 11 billion people in 2100, what are the truly sustainable alternatives?
My opinion
It's a pain in the ass. Knowing the numbers is one thing, comparing them to other sectors is another.
As a big meat and cheese consumer, I eat it every day and finally, I participate to the decline of our planet and to the rise of the animal exploitation lobby.
The question I have to ask myself now is "How can I change my eating habits? "
Many products exist to find the proteins our bodies need and I don't have to stop eating them. A first solution would be to reduce my consumption.
However, among the different plant foods, there are very few that I like to eat:
- Leguminous plants: Apart from lentils, I don't like the rest;
- Oleaginous fruits: I like them but I get mouth ulcers as soon as I eat them;
- Oilseeds: I eat them in my cereal bread but I need a lot of them to meet my needs;
- Soy: Very good source of protein. I have to figure out how to cook it to enjoy it because the texture is not pleasant;
I'm probably forgetting others but, you can see the difficulty for me to change my habits. I will work on that.
In conclusion, this documentary is worth seeing and sharing. Far from a vegetarian idea, it will touch anyone who watches it.
