Well this is just awesome. I love to hear stories of folks going to a local coin shop and getting to know the owner, then, getting the "special treatment" those shop-keepers can give to a regular customer.
I live in a small town and don't have a lcs in my area so it's I usually just get to hear those stories and live vicariously through the folks that do have these experiences... until recently...
I have an antique shop in my town that I did not pay much attention to for many years, then recently I paid them a visit and to my surprise the guy had a decent selection of world coins. Not much in the way of silver bullion but some really nice pieces of numismatic history.
So I would pop in once in a while and buy a small coin or two while chatting him up and lo and behold, we became kind of friendly and he is now pulling out some really cool coins to show (and sell) me.
I popped in today to see what he had in his special case in the back however there was a different person working so I just looked through what was in the case. Not a bad idea though as I found this BEAUTY from Netherlands, minted in 1783.
For a coin that is well over 200 years old the detail is amazing!
Here's the little info I could find on this coin, maybe someone can clue me in to the denomination and any other info on this bad boy.
The cabled edge is pretty sweet as well...
This coin is super awesome and I am quite excited to see what else this dealer has in his bag of tricks.
