The digital world is changing. We are seeing the shift from search engines, i.e. websites, to the delivering of information.
Chatbots are a powerful tool that will become the norm. There is a battle right now, one that I foresee as ending poorly for the search engines. As we enter a time where the Internet is driven by AI, the need for websites will diminish. These are for people. Computers do not require a website.
For this reason, it was a step in the right direction to see how AI is responding to Hive. There was a tweet posted on X that showed Grok's response to censorship and social media.
In this article we will explore how this it the future and the importance of getting the information into the chatbots.
The Importance for Hive To Feed AI
As we can see from the above interaction, the conversation was turned to Hive. Grok did not immediately bring that up as an alternative but it does pull the information once prompted. It understands what Hive is and the characteristics that are offered.
The important thing here is the feedback. By mentioning Hive, there database will likely link Hive with Mastodon. There are other ways which the data will be indexed, furthering the position of Hive to other aspects of this topic.
This is a topic I started covering years back. People were posting stuff online, not realizing the impact. Everything was going to be (if it wasn't already) fed into AI. Few were cognizant of that fact.
Today, it is more apparent. People see how Big Tech is scraping websites, trying to gather whatever information they can. Of course, a battle is arising where the owners of the sites are fighting back, trying to prevent this from happening.
What is important here is not the tug-o-war that is occurring. Instead, we should focus upon the power that we wield to impact what these models contain, at least to a point. There are factors such as weighting and other algorithmic tweaks which affects the outcomes. However, in terms of the data provided, that is up to us.
Training AI In Our Image
There is a lot of discussion about AI running away from us. This could be an eventual outcome although I am not necessarily in this camp.
One way to view this is via the "training of AI in our image" lens. This is a viewpoint which starts with the premise we are the ones feeding AI. Whatever we create is input, along with humans dictating the algorithms. Again, there are factors beyond our individual control, especially as content creators. Nevertheless, we do have power over what we put out there.
When looking at something like Hive, we have the ability to feed the system. Reverting back to what I wrote earlier, this was overlooked by most. Today, it still is by many.
Hive is a decentralized database. Grok now understands that. It is something that has been espoused for years. Not surprising, the chatbot picked up on it.
This brings up the question of what are people doing to ensure this expands. How many are posting content that feeds these models with information that will impact the output? As more people turn to AI for their information, doesn't this make sense?
Naturally, there are a couple approaches we can take.
There are traditional social media platforms. The problem there is we are feeding specific companies, which use the data. In this situation, the response will be fed back into Grok, yet it will not appear within Gemini or Llama (unless they are still able to scrape X).
Decentralized Database = Data Democratization
Where Hive differs is it offers a decentralized database. Anything posted on Hive is available for any model to train on. It is only a matter of time before this data is incorporated by these companies. The Hive database is growing daily.
With more data being locked down, how are companies going to get around this? One way is by turning to the data that is essentially part of the "commons". This is where Hive comes in.
The Hive database is available to anyone. No permission is required. Any company (or individual) can set up the server to pull down the data. In an age where more is being locked down, this is becoming novel.
It is important to keep writing about this. The democratization of data is a crucial element to humanity moving forward. If we leave it to Big Tech, they will silo even more powerful technologies, just like they did the Internet.
Therefore, in closing, think about the impact of where the data is going. Be sure to structure what is posted in a way that leads the models to desired outcomes. The image above shows how this can filter through.
