Visiting my village is not my usual activity as my parents passed away when I was still in my teens. Since I had left at the age of 15, I never thought of visiting, as there was no one I would like to meet that's that important. Everyone I grew up with has left the village into cities and sought better opportunities, which means there is no one who I would relate with if I decide to often visit home.
Only my older brother remains back in the house of our father with his family and has made many changes in our family compound during these years. It has been more than 10 years since I last visited my village, and frankly, I will say that things have really changed during this space. Almost all the buildings we have then in the village were replaced by modern structures, giving the village a cleaner look.
Since modern buildings and structures are built, playing grounds are now smaller for children to play on. I am not even sure if children are still playing together in open spaces like we did when we were children. Honestly, I miss those days when we gathered in open spaces at night to play "there is a fire on the mountain" running around the game. Children are now watching TV movies at night or playing games on phones.
I was really pleased with the visible changes I saw in my village. Not only are there modern buildings, the streets were also upgraded to modern day and even got with the drainage devices provided. The most important change or development was the borehole water supply, which was made by my older brother directly in front of our family compound. And now everyone has clean drinking water for them whenever they need it. It is amazing how far we have come since I left the village so many years ago.
The water supply made a huge difference in people's lives, no longer necessary to travel miles to find portable water, or to spend little money sponsoring those ruthless and conscientious water sellers who sell water in bags and bottles. Besides, we can now all enjoy clean drinking water without the risk of using contaminated facilities. The borehole also provides enough water for other uses such as cooking, washing, and bathing.
I am very proud of my elder brother for making it possible, and I think the people in my village are also grateful. It is amazing how something as simple as water supply can have a huge difference in people's lives. I hope that other neighboring villages and communities will soon have clean water.
Borehole water is a great relief for people, even if they have to pay for water. Having available water is a good thing within walking distance from homes. In addition, the Jerrican fee is also cheaper than what they paid for portable water, even if they had to go remotely to get it.
There is also a new community market that has just been completed. When I still lived in the village, the community market was usually carried out under a large tree in the middle of the village. Women bring their objects mainly food and fresh vegetables and fruits every morning for sale and those that need them go there and buy. It was just a municipal market. With a modern market building, it is now the market for all. People now come from other places where they could do business there.
I am so impressed by what I have seen, and I hope this development will continue to make my village become a little London in the near future.
