THE PROBLEM
Each transaction on a blockchain has a weight (in bytes): The blocks have a maximum capacity limit that cannot be exceeded. It is clear that, when there are more pending transactions than those in a block, some of them will have to wait for the next one. Which? Those who pay the lowest fees to the miners, since they are the ones to choose.
THE TURNING POINT
The idea behind layer 2 is to take advantage of the Ethereum mainnet to write data to it, moving
computation and storage elsewhere offchain. This allows transactions to be about 100 times smaller (in bytes) and as a result it becomes possible to put many more within a block.
ROLLUP
And here is the practical solution. In rollups when we send a transaction it is taken over by the validators (of the rollup) who then publish it on the Ethereum mainnet in a reduced form (they are called assertions). The computation takes place on the rollup, but the security is given by the Ethereum network as the data is written on-chain.
DIFFERENT BLOCKCHAINS
So are they different blockchains? Yes! However, each rollup block has a link to the Ethereum blockchain, as the security of the rollup comes from the security of Ethereum. Since they are different blockchains, your wallet must trivially be configured (as you configure it for the BSC). It is also not possible to use dApps that live on Ethereum by exploiting the rollup. It is first necessary that they decide to migrate to the rollup.
LAYER 2 WILL BE THE
FUTURE OF ETHEREUM?
