Continuing our discussion of engagement on Hive, in this video I dive even deeper into the nuances that differentiate platforms like Snaps (PeakD) and Threads (InLeo). To recap: we found that Snaps tend to generate more social interaction and conversations, while Threads, despite being less busy, seem to offer a greater potential for direct financial reward, especially through the $LEO token (tradable on Hive Engine). But why does this difference exist and what does it reveal about the ecosystem?
Let’s look at the “effort vs. reward” factor. Based on my own experience, I was able to achieve a moderate volume of comments (around 40-50/day) and it was relatively straightforward, especially on Snaps, taking only a few hours. However, reaching the numbers seen in some "superhumans" or potential spammers (150, 300, 400+ comments/day) would require almost full-time dedication, turning interaction on Hive into a real job, perhaps even more profitable than a minimum wage depending on the price of $HIVE and the country where the person lives. This leads us to question the motivations behind such high volumes of comments.
Another point to reflect on is the repetition of names in the engagement rankings. Why do the same users always appear? I believe this is a symptom of the still relatively small and active user base on Hive's microblogging platforms. This creates a cycle where the same people interact with each other, without the input of new voices and perspectives. How can we break this cycle and make the environment more dynamic and welcoming to new participants?
In my view, there is one crucial observation: the notable absence of "whales" (the largest holders of Hive Power) in these microblogging spaces. While dolphins and orcas are more present, the most important figures rarely appear to comment or post. Why? I believe there is a huge wasted potential here. The simple presence and interaction of a whale generates a "sense of belonging", attracts the attention of the "sardines", validates quality comments (helping to identify authorities on various subjects) and could even encourage users who do not normally frequent microblogs to participate, following the influence of these big players.
The more active participation of whales in microblogging would not be primarily for the financial reward (they already earn a lot from passive curation through voting), but rather a strategic investment in the engagement and health of the Hive ecosystem. A daily micropost, a debate initiated, a contest or a raffle promoted by them could have a cascade effect, energizing the platform and "pulling" the smaller users. Could this be a way for the "big guys" to help Hive grow in a more organic and distributed way?
This video does not provide definitive answers, but it seeks to stimulate critical thinking about how we measure and encourage engagement. We need to go beyond the numbers and look at the quality, intent, and real impact of interactions to build a stronger, more vibrant Hive.
