After receiving feedback from some members of the Hive ecosystem, I have created this educational series of articles to explain some concepts and tools of traditional (and not-so-traditional) finance that are transversal and essential in investment valuation, regardless of the specific application field.
Following the growth philosophy that we have named at Zettabright as Vision 4S (see article here), the foundations that I will try to develop in the simplest way possible are the seeds of value investing, not only in the stock market but in any project that involves capital allocation.
To give some formality to the notions I publish, the articles in this series will contain, among other things, hypothetical examples and simple calculations to illustrate the use of certain key concepts, which will require nothing more than a calculator or an Excel spreadsheet to be solved. I hope they are functional to improve our financial culture and, consequently, to make more accurate decisions for our future.
What is the interest rate?
Many of us have directly interacted with an interest rate. Likely, we have requested a bank loan to undertake a project that we hope will provide us with greater well-being. By doing so, we have contractually committed to repaying in the future not only the amount that the bank gives us now but also an additional amount of money that that bank charges. The requested and granted amount to us at the time is referred to as the principal, while the extra paid amount is the interest. This interest is expressed as a percentage of the principal, that is, as an interest rate.
Roughly speaking, this scenario is the one that is present in the general perception of people and what makes them almost intuitively define interest as the price we pay for the money we receive on a loan or the price we obtain for lending money. Although this generalized definition is quite pragmatic, it makes us overlook the supreme importance of interest in an economy. Exalting this importance is precisely the main objective of this article, which is based upon one of the master classes by Dr. Jesús Huerta de Soto (see video here) and on super extended concepts of the Austrian School of Economics.
Interest is, perhaps, the most relevant quantity in any free market. It conveys, among other things, information about people's time preference rate, that is, the rate at which people are willing to exchange present goods for future goods. With different predominance among one another, human beings tend to value current well-being more than future well-being, fundamentally due to the ineradicable uncertainty associated with what will happen later.
Therefore, if someone had to give up a satisfaction today in exchange for obtaining another one in a month, he would do so if he considered that this future satisfaction would be greater than the one he would have gained today. For example, that person could give an amount of money now and give up his current spending if he expected to obtain not only the amount he just gave but also an additional amount in a month.
Let's say Marta lends José 100 USD at an interest rate of 10% and one month due. The information this scenario conveys is that Martha (lender) is willing to give up $100 today on the condition that José (borrower) returns $100 plus 10% of that $100 in a month.
Now, a third party –Carmen– can carry out the same operation with José but at a rate of 7%. In this case, Carmen is willing to give up $100 in the present in exchange for only $107 in the future, the initial $100 plus seven of interest. In turn, a fourth person –Juan– could lend the same $100 at a rate of 6%. And so, there could be a myriad of possibilities.
What I'm getting at with this hypothetical example is that time preference can vary from person to person, as it does, which is why the interest rate demanded by each individual in the previous example is different. Marta values the present more than Carmen and Juan since she would only give up the current $100 if the future gave her a more substantial benefit. In other words, it is more costly for her to give up the present good. Juan, in turn, is the one who values the present the least because the rate he demands to give up the current $100 is the lowest of all. In other words, Marta's time preference is higher than that of Carmen and Juan, a condition reflected in the higher rate she demands.
These rates based only on the time preference of individuals involved in the operations (agents) are known as pure interest rates. Furthermore, if we could add them all into an average, we would obtain an approximation of what is known as the** social rate of time preference**.
What additional information does the interest rate contain?
Interest not only reflects the time preference of agents in the market but also transmits information about two additional variables of great relevance in the valuation of projects and investments.
The first of these variables is risk. Lending transactions always carry a probability that the agreed-upon amounts will not get repaid to the lenders. It is what is known as default risk. Each investment or project has its associated risk, and it is logical that whoever places money there wants to receive extra compensation for the exposure to such adverse probability. For this reason, the interest rate usually contains another component called risk premium that is added to the time preference component already explained.
The second variable is price inflation. It is also logical that a lender wants to hedge against the possibility that the lent money will have lower purchasing power when returned and add a component for price inflation. This price inflation is nothing more than a consequence of the decrease in the purchasing power of money, caused either by an increase in the money supply, a fall in the demand for money, or both. But that is the subject of another discussion.
In summary, interest is a magnitude that contains information about the time preference of individuals, the risk of a project, and the purchasing power of money in the future. And it is precisely all that conveyed data that, in a free market, allows saving, investment, and consumption to get coordinated spontaneously and peacefully.
It is worth remembering that interest is the pillar upon which savings rest. Savings are then turned into investments to generate a more vertically productive structure (capable of creating more abundant capital goods), which, in turn, will create more abundant and better consumer goods and increase the general well-being.
Intervention in the spontaneous formation of these rates from power causes outstanding distortions in the phases of this process. Trying to impose them from a central bank without causing a lack of coordination and damage is stupid but is carried out everywhere. Perhaps this is the most important reason why I turned my attention to Bitcoin and blockchain some years ago.
This vision that explicitly connects the interest rate with the well-being of an economy –the vision of the Austrian School– allows us to explain economic cycles as no other current of thought does. However, it is the most discredited with absurd sophisms and almost not taught at schools and universities. The reason is one: it is the least beneficial for the status quo.
Interest and investment decisions
As a value investor, why do I need to consider the interest rate when evaluating the different alternatives in which I can inject capital? The short answer is to apply comparative analyses that suggest the highest return and lowest cost alternative. Part of this study involves some financial criteria, such as the net present value (NPV), the internal rate of return (IRR), the capitalized cost (CC), the capital recovery period (CRP), and the equivalent annual cost. (EAC), to name a few. The estimates of all of them depend on the interest rate and ultimately guide our decision but cannot be considered more than just estimates.
I am one of those who think that investment is an art and not an exact science, so estimating any of the indicators that I mentioned before and believing that this calculation is infallible and precise when deciding to invest in an asset is not only a simplistic way out, but also a clumsy one because such an attitude will most likely lead to losses. Given the uncertainty of the future, it is advisable to follow a somewhat more elaborate process, but not impossible to complete.
The first thing we must define is the strategy that we will use based on the following five variables: expected return, tolerable risk, expected liquidity, planning horizon, and capital restrictions.
Then, regardless of the order in which we prefer to do it –bottom up or top down– we will have to consider the macroeconomic perspective, the specific sector where the project or asset performs, and the fundamentals of the asset itself based upon the criteria mentioned above and others. In all these aspects, the interest rate can tip the balance in favor or against any alternative.

Luego de ciertas reflexiones y de consultarlo con algunos gentiles miembros del ecosistema Hive, he decidido crear esta sucesión de artículos con propósito educativo para explicar a la comunidad algunos conceptos y herramientas de las finanzas tradicionales (y no tan tradicionales) que son transversales e imprescindibles en el mundo de la evaluación de inversiones, con independencia del ámbito en el que se apliquen.
Siguiendo la filosofía de crecimiento que hemos bautizado en Zettabright como Visión 4S (ver artículo aquí), los fundamentos que procuraré desarrollar de la forma más sencilla posible en esta serie constituyen las semillas de la inversión en valor, no sólo en bolsa sino en cualquier proyecto que implique asignación de capital.
Con el objeto de imprimir algo de formalidad a las nociones que publico, los artículos de esta serie contendrán, entre otras cosas, ejemplos hipotéticos y cómputos simples para ilustrar el uso de determinados conceptos clave, que no requerirán más que una calculadora o una sencilla hoja de cálculo para resolverse. Espero sean de utilidad para mejorar nuestra cultura financiera y, en consecuencia, para tomar decisiones más acertadas de cara a nuestro porvenir.
¿Qué es verdaderamente el interés?
Muchos de nosotros hemos estado vinculados de manera explícita y consciente con lo que una tasa de interés supone. Quizás, hemos solicitado un crédito bancario para acometer algún proyecto que esperamos nos procure un mayor bienestar. Al hacerlo, nos hemos comprometido por contrato a devolver en el futuro no sólo el monto que el banco nos entrega en el presente, sino también una cantidad de dinero adicional que ese banco cobra. Al monto que solicitamos y que se nos otorga en el momento se le conoce como principal y al monto extra que debemos pagar se le conoce como interés. Ese interés suele expresarse como un porcentaje del principal, es decir, como una tasa de interés.
Grosso modo, este escenario es el que está presente en la percepción general de las personas y el que hace que casi intuitivamente definamos el interés como el precio que pagamos por el dinero que recibimos en préstamo o el que obtenemos por prestar dinero. Aunque esta definición generalizada es bastante pragmática, nos hace pasar por alto la importancia superlativa que tiene el interés en una economía. Exaltar esa importancia es justo el principal objetivo de este artículo, que en gran medida se basa en una de las clases magistrales del Dr. Jesús Huerta de Soto (ver video aquí) y en conceptos súper extendidos de la Escuela Austríaca de Economía.
El interés es, quizás, la cantidad más relevante de todo mercado libre. Transmite, entre otras cosas, información sobre la tasa de preferencia temporal de las personas, es decir, sobre la tasa a la que las personas están dispuestas a intercambiar bienes presentes por bienes futuros. Con distinta preponderancia entre unos y otros, los seres humanos solemos valorar más el bienestar presente que el bienestar futuro, fundamentalmente por la incertidumbre inerradicable asociada con lo que ha de ocurrir más adelante.
Por tanto, si una persona tuviera que renunciar a una satisfacción hoy a cambio de obtener otra dentro de un mes, lo haría si considerara que esa satisfacción futura será mayor que la que hubiera obtenido hoy. Por ejemplo, esa persona podría entregar una cantidad de dinero ahora y renunciar a su gasto actual si esperase obtener dentro de un mes no sólo la cantidad que acaba de entregar, sino, además, otra adicional.
Digamos que Marta le presta a José 100 USD a una tasa de interés del 10% y a un mes de vencimiento. La información que este escenario transmite es que Marta (prestamista) está dispuesta a renunciar a esos 100 USD hoy con la condición de que José (prestatario) le devuelva esos 100 USD más el 10% de esos 100 USD dentro de un mes.
Ahora bien, un tercero –Carmen– está en capacidad de realizar la misma operación con José pero a una tasa del 7%. En este caso, Carmen está dispuesta a renunciar a esos 100 USD del presente a cambio de sólo 107 USD del futuro, los 100 iniciales más siete de interés. A su vez, una cuarta persona –Juan– estaría en capacidad de prestar los mismos 100 USD a una tasa del 6%. Y así, podría existir una miríada de posibilidades.
A lo que voy con este hipotético y sencillo ejemplo es que la preferencia temporal puede variar de persona a persona, como de hecho lo hace, razón por la cual la tasa de interés que exige cada una en el ejemplo anterior es distinta. Marta valora más el presente que Carmen y Juan, puesto que sólo renunciaría a los 100 USD actuales si el futuro le procurara un beneficio mayor. En otras palabras, es más costoso para ella desprenderse del bien actual. Juan, por su parte, es quien valora menos el presente de los tres, porque la tasa que exige para renunciar a los 100 USD actuales es la menor de todas. En otras palabras, la preferencia temporal de Marta es más alta que la de Carmen y Juan, y esto se refleja en una mayor tasa exigida por ella.
Estas tasas basadas sólo en la preferencia temporal de los individuos involucrados en las operaciones (agentes) son las que se conocen como tasas de interés puras. Además, si pudiéramos agregarlas todas en un promedio, obtendríamos una aproximación de lo que se conoce como tasa social de preferencia temporal.
¿Qué otra información contiene la tasa de interés?
El interés no sólo refleja la preferencia temporal de los agentes en el mercado, sino que también transmite información sobre dos variables adicionales de gran relevancia en la valoración de proyectos e inversiones.
La primera de esas variables es el riesgo. Las operaciones de préstamo siempre conllevan una probabilidad de que los montos convenidos no se devuelvan a los prestamistas; es lo que se conoce como** riesgo de impago**. Cada inversión o proyecto tiene su riesgo asociado, y es lógico que quien coloque su dinero allí quiera recibir una compensación extra para resarcir de cierto modo ese probabilidad adversa a la que se expone. Por ello, la tasa de interés suele contener una componente llamada prima por riesgo que se agrega a la de preferencia temporal ya explicada.
La segunda variable es la inflación de precios. Es también lógico que un prestamista quiera cubrirse frente a la posibilidad de que el dinero que prestó tenga un poder de compra menor cuando le sea devuelto en el futuro y agregue, por ende, una componente por inflación de precios. Esa inflación de precios no es más que una consecuencia de la disminución del poder de compra del dinero, causada bien por un aumento de la oferta monetaria, bien por una caída de la demanda de dinero o bien por ambas cosas. Pero eso es motivo de otra discusión.
En resumen, el interés es una magnitud que contiene información sobre la preferencia temporal de los individuos, sobre el riesgo de un proyecto y sobre el poder adquisitivo del dinero en el futuro. Y es justo toda esa data transmitida la que en un mercado libre permite coordinar ahorro, inversión y consumo de manera espontánea y pacífica.
Cabe recordar que el interés es el pilar sobre el cual descansa el ahorro, que luego se canaliza como inversión y deriva en una estructura productiva más vertical (capaz de generar mayores y mejores bienes de capital), la cual a su vez procurará mayores y mejores bienes de consumo y aumentará el bienestar general.
La intervención en la espontánea formación de estas tasas o tipos desde el poder causa distorsiones importantes en las fases de este proceso. Pretender imponerlas desde un banco central sin causar descoordinación y daño es realmente estúpido y, sin embargo, es lo que se hace por doquier. Quizás sea ésta la razón de mayor peso por la cual he volcado mi atención hacia bitcoin y la tecnología blockchain desde hace algunos años.
Esta visión que conecta de forma explícita la tasa de interés con el bienestar de una economía –la visión de la Escuela Austríaca– es la que permite explicar los ciclos económicos como ninguna otra corriente de pensamiento lo hace. Sin embargo, es la que se suele desacreditar con más sofismas absurdos y no enseñar en las escuelas y universidades del mundo. El motivo es uno: es la menos beneficiosa para el statu quo.
El interés y las decisiones de inversión
Ahora bien, como inversor en valor, ¿para qué me sirve el interés a la hora de evaluar las distintas alternativas en las que puedo inyectar capital? La respuesta corta es: para aplicar análisis comparativos que te sugieran la alternativa de mayor rendimiento y menor costo. Parte de ese análisis pasa por aplicar algunos criterios financieros como el valor presente neto (VPN), la tasa interna de retorno (TIR), el costo capitalizado (CC), el período de recuperación del capital (PRC) y el costo anual uniforme equivalente (CAUE), por nombrar algunos; las estimaciones de todos dependen de la tasa de interés, y al final guían nuestra decisión pero no pueden considerarse más que sólo estimaciones.
Soy de los que piensa que la inversión es un arte y no una ciencia exacta, de manera que estimar alguno de los indicadores que antes mencioné y creer que ese cálculo es infalible y preciso a la hora de tomar la decisión de invertir en un activo es no sólo una salida simplista, sino también torpe, porque tal actitud conducirá a pérdidas con alta probabilidad. Dada la incertidumbre del futuro, lo aconsejable es seguir un proceso algo más elaborado, pero no imposible de culminar.
Lo primero que debemos definir es la estrategia que emplearemos en virtud de las siguientes cinco variables: el rendimiento esperado, el riesgo tolerable, la liquidez esperada, el horizonte de planeación y las restricciones de capital.
Luego, indistintamente del orden en que prefiramos hacerlo –de abajo hacia arriba o de arriba hacia abajo– habrá que considerar la perspectiva macroeconómica, el del sector concreto donde el proyecto o activo se ubica y los fundamentos del activo mismo sobre la base de los criterios mencionados antes y otros. En todos estos aspectos, la tasa de interés puede inclinar la balanza a favor o en contra de cualquier alternativa; por ello es tan trascendente para la economía y para las inversiones en valor.
