In a bustling city like Singapore, where the educational system places immense emphasis on academic achievements, it's common to find children attending numerous tuition and enrichment classes outside of school. Unfortunately, many underprivileged families struggle to afford these exorbitant fees, resulting in their children falling behind their peers. Recognizing this disparity, my church initiated a tuition center to provide affordable education to children from lower-income families around the neighborhood 🤗
As I'm keen on contributing back to the society, I dedicate my weekends
to teaching math to these bright young minds. In this blog post, I want to share a snippet of my Saturday
routine and shed light on the role I play in supporting and inspiring these children 😊
Creating Opportunities for Underprivileged Children
The tuition center at my church serves as a haven for underprivileged children who desire to excel academically but face financial obstacles. By offering affordable education, the church aim to bridge the gap and provide equal opportunities for these students. In a society where success is often measured by academic achievements, it's vital that we as a community could empower these children to pursue their dreams and overcome their circumstances 💪
Fostering a Love for Learning
While academic success is important, it's equally essential to foster a love for learning in these young students. As I teach Math to the children, I strive not only to impart knowledge but also to ignite their curiosity and enthusiasm. By creating a positive and nurturing environment, I hope to instill in them a genuine passion for education. I firmly believe that when learning becomes enjoyable, children are more likely to excel and unlock their full potential 🤓
Long-Term Impact
Many of the children attending our tuition center have been with us since their early primary school years. It's heartwarming to witness their growth and progress over time. Currently, I am teaching a group of Primary 1 students whom I hope to commit myself to see them all the way through to their Primary 6 levels. As they approach Primary 6, where they will then face the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), a major milestone in Singapore's education system and my hope is not just for their academic success but for their overall well-being 😇

Supporting Students Beyond Academics
In addition to teaching and educating the children, I firmly believe that one of the most important roles we play as volunteers is to provide emotional support and encouragement. Many of these students face immense pressure from both their families and society to perform well academically. As mentors, we should strive to create a safe space where they can express their concerns and fears without judgment. By fostering a supportive environment, I hope to alleviate their anxieties and remind them that their self-worth extends beyond academic achievements 😉
The Power of Volunteering
Volunteering at the tuition center has been a rewarding and humbling experience for me. It has not only allowed me to make a positive impact on the lives of these children but has also enriched my own life. Being able to witness their growth, resilience, and determination serves as a constant reminder of the strength of the human spirit 🤘
