Attending my girlfriend's grandmother's 70th birthday celebration was a special occasion that allowed me to reflect on the significance of being remembered and appreciated by others.

As I made my way to the event, a sudden gush of thoughts flooded my mind, and I imagined how I could leave a lasting impression on her family. I don't have a lot of memories of these kinds of gatherings. Growing up in a broken family, these types of joyous gatherings were not something I experienced frequently. However, this celebration presented a renewed chance for me to embrace the concept of family, and I yearned to establish a connection with them. Through active participation, genuine care, and personal involvement, I aimed to showcase my true self and create memories that would endure.

Building Bonds and Fostering Connection:

As I arrived, the warm atmosphere enveloped me, shown by laughter and heartfelt conversations. Recognizing the significance of this milestone celebration, I eagerly contributed my efforts to contribute to the preparations.

I volunteered to fix the decorations outside and take care of their little one, Emem. She helped me by handing over the balloons and making me laugh with all the random stuff that she is saying. Emem really helped me feel the warm welcome from my girlfriend's family.

Contributing to the Festivities:

During the festivities, I recognized the immense effort Nanay had invested in preparing the food for the party. While she dedicated her time to ensure everyone's enjoyment, I took the initiative to help her by managing the sari-sari store. It was a privilege to contribute in this way, allowing me to interact with Nanay's family members, and fostering a sense of belonging. Through genuine conversations and shared laughter, I wanted to build connections and create lasting memories.

The Desire for Remembrance:

Through my active involvement, I wanted Nanay's family to know who I am and the role I aspire to play in their lives. By immersing myself in the celebration, I hoped to leave a positive impression and be remembered as someone who genuinely cares, supports, and appreciates the value of family. I wanted them to see my eagerness to be part of their lives and my commitment to building enduring relationships.

I want them to see me as a caring partner for my girlfriend and I value the family as much as I value my girl.

A little gift

As a little gift for Nanay, I printed a tarpaulin for her frozen product menu and hanged it in front of the store. Aside from this, I brought her a bakya (sandals) which she wore immediately for the party. My heart is so full after seeing her smile.

Re: Nurturing my inner peace

On my jeepney ride to Nanay's birthday, my bag got stepped on by a little child. I know it will leave a mark on my bag. But looking at the sleeping child being carried by her hardworking mom I felt empathy more than hate and anger. Their situation is far more disheartening than my bag getting a little dirt from her shoe.

So instead of aggressively moving my bag away and calling her out, I made sure that her feet is comfortably resting.

My bag wouldn't get hurt with a little dirt, but the moment of rest this child needs will. I always say that the world would be a better place if people can understand more and care.
