I have to admit it was really my decision.
Not too long ago I was awoken to a bright light shinning in my bedroom window. It was more of a blue light than white but so bright I had to guard my eyes. I felt a strong twist in my stomach and then nothing but dreams. Sometimes I was floating as if I had no weight. Other times I felt surrounded as if I was waiting at a crowded train platform. I couldn’t make out specifics of the dreams but I knew somehow that I was dreaming. Everything was forgotten for a time I could not exactly measure. It was maybe twenty minutes or twenty years. When I woke up to a cold vybrainium floor... I knew I was alive, but I couldn’t remember who I was or what my name was. I tried to remember something but all could remember was that bright light. It was no longer there. I looked around at my surroundings. There were eight walls not made from wood or plaster but all made of vybrainium a hard and cold substance. The room was completely empty and then I felt a cold tingly feeling called fear. I didn’t know which direction was up or which direction was down. I found myself floating literally in the middle of the room.
A door suddenly opened and in rushed a squall of cold air, enough to land my feet on what I knew to be “the ground”. I was face to face with two large flat men. Actually, they looked more like giant cockroaches then men. They didn’t float around like me. Instead they kept their footing well and stood glaring at me. Behind them crawled in another wearing a kind of glove over his front appendages. They said something completely incomprehensible to me. Then the one with the gloves said to me in plain English,
“We shall need one of your appendages. Shall it be the front appendages or the rear appendages?”
I was very dizzy but I tried hard to asses my situation. When they opened the door, I fell out of my place in the middle of the room onto “the ground”. When I touched “the ground” I landed on rear appendages. Since then I have been supported only by my rear appendages. I haven’t used my front appendages even once since I have woken from that dream. I looked up and answered,
“I’d rather keep both appendages but if you must have one then go ahead and take the front appendages.”
The doctor answered,
“Very well then. You may rest.”
I woke up this morning in my own bed. Things began to come back to me little by little. When I rolled out of bed the floor was not a cold vybrainuim but a soft pine wood. I felt the soft wool rung in the middle of the room and was so happy I sat down. No longer was I floating around but I was in the place I called home. What a headache I had but so glad to recognize things once again. I walked into the bathroom, looked in the mirror and screamed. At the place where my arms once hung now remained only empty stumps.
Whatever happened to me and those giant cockroaches was not a dream. It actually happened. I came to the bathroom to rinse my mouth out and brush my teeth, but this was not going to be as easy as I planned. At least I could sit in the bathtub for a while and rest. I could get start the bath water easily with my feet. Hey this was not so bad. I grabbed the wash cloth with my toes and started washing and it felt good. I did some stretches that I haven’t done in years.
It took a lot of practice but I was able to open the refrigerator and get some food together without using my arms. I’ve heard of things like this. I remember reading about a Sweedish girl named Lena Maria Klingvall who was born with no arms and just one leg. She was still able to drive a car and cook and do everything that a person needs to do. Why couldn’t I?
This was a lot more difficult than I had imagined. Human toes are not really made to grab things like toothbrushes and typing is going a lot slower than I wanted. Still it is getting along and I am still able to get out my post for The Weekend #weekend-engagement. I’m basically a two toe typer when it comes to hitting the keys now but I will get better.
If I could find my arms things may go back to normal but I have pretty much given up all hope in getting them back. That cockroach doctor didn’t say he wanted to borrow my arms. He just up and took them away. I don’t know what I am going to tell the kids at school tomorrow when their teacher comes in without any arms. Luckily our class is on zoom and mostly they will see my face only anyway.
I wonder…
Have you ever had vybrainium aliens come and steal your appendages away in the middle of the night? If so, how did you deal with it and did you go without the front appendages or the rear appendages? Write about it from @galenkp’s prompt on the weekend engagement challenge post.
