Anything I could ever ask for, probably.
I used to hate being in a super crowded environment, because I would easily felt exhausted. However, the sunday market is place I visit every now and then. Maybe I just liked the “vibes” of it—not the market itself, but the fact that Sunday is a day off for many people so it always feel like a day of freedom in some way.
I can’t even remember if Sunday memories of my childhood might included going to a market like this or something. But the main reason I went to the Sunday market as an adult, at first, was to checked out thrifting clothes. Years ago, the thrifting game started to become a thing in my country. Maybe I’m just late to know about it, but seems like there’s exactly an era where thrifting (especially clothes) become popular enough to common people like me, start getting into the market industry.
I wrote “common people” because before it become popular, all I knew about thrifting was like “vintage stuff”. Rare items that hard to find or items from well-known international brand, and stuff like that. But I think different people have different opinions about it. Anyway, at that time I ended up not buying any thrift clothes, instead I only bought street foods😁
These days I often find sunday market is quite an interesting place to spend time. Last Sunday, I went there again. In my city, sunday market is not only in one place. Actually they are in several different areas but even in each area, the sellers are not only on one particular part of the street. So usually I only go to clothing section but since last Sunday I went by my bike, I decided to go through a different part of the street. This section is more random in my opinion, because there are vintage items, jewelry, sunglasses, shoes and secondhand clothes as well.
I’ve been through this section when I was cycling before and never really got a clear look of what they were selling. It’s always crowded and somehow most of them are grown men even elderly. I just wonder what they’re actually looking for😁 They seem to enjoy the atmosphere there, even if they just check out the stuffs – talk to the seller – left with nothing, then go to another seller – and do it all over again. That’s a wholesome experience though.
I wrote that the previous section was more random in terms of the items being sold, but honestly it was also random things on the other part of the street. On my way to checked out the clothing section, there was an interesting seller who—from his sign—sell a multipurpose glue. But what he displayed was actually a lot of stuff. Mostly are metal and wood, I think it was to show how the glue really works to reattaching an item, even one made from materials that seem impossible to put back together. He also placed his multipurpose glue in a suitcase and I find it cute somehow😁 He was surrounded by many people as he demonstrated how the glue works.
Then, of course, there are street foods. Any kind of street foods can be found in the area. From Indonesian traditional street food to Korean street food, we can find them. There’s IDR10.000 pizza too (less than $1), but I didn’t tried it. I think if people go to the sunday market without any plan to find something, I’m sure they will end up with 5 different food in their hands😅
Aside from things that always there like foods and clothes, I sometimes found a plant seller as well. These pictures below were taken a few weeks ago. However, I don’t think saw him again last Sunday so maybe the seller not always there or he moved to another section of the market I don’t know. I ended up buying 2 plants that day, because most of his plants were herbal so I was curious about each of the benefits. I’ve been wanting to start my gardening journey for a long time now, but honestly I’m not doing too well either.
Last but not least, obviously is the thrifting clothes area. Some stalls sell their clothes only for IDR10.000 and their pants collection start IDR15.000. Second-hand clothes are not for everyone, right? Some people might feel icky about it. For me personally, I buy them once in a while. But mostly, I buy items that I will wear as an outer or if it’s a shirt, I make sure to layer it with my own t-shirt underneath. I still feel comfortable wearing it that way. Last Sunday I ended bringing home 2 pieces of clothing—stupidly, while I had to cycle on the road😅
