Hello Hivers!
Today I would like to participate in the Weekend-Engagement Writing Week 139 organized by @galenkp. I want to share about my experience to do Tarek Pukat. Hope you guys enjoy it.
Have you ever heard of Tarek Pukat?
Tarek pukat comes from the Acehnese language which is a fishing activity using a fishing gear called Pukat Darat/Pukat Pantai. Tarek in Aceh if translated means pull, tarek pukat means pull the trawl. So the meaning of this activity is to pull the trawl towards the land. This fishing gear is a traditional fishing gear used by the people of Aceh and still survives today.
Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to do Tarek Pukat activities. Initially, we did a nature laboratory camp, which is an activity to practice taking data on coastal ecosystems. While doing the activity, we saw 2 men doing Tarek Pukat. ukat. Because we were free, my friend and I decided to help pull the trawl and at the same time wanted to try directly how to pull the trawl, which we only knew the theory during lectures.
Pulling one trawl is very hard, because we are also pulling a trawl filled with fish and have to fight against the waves of the sea. This trawl pulling activity should be done by at least 5 people or more because the energy needed to pull this trawl is very large. Imagine that initially the trawl was only pulled by 2 men.
Because I studied marine science, I learned a little about this fishing gear. In my experience this time, the way the trawl works is slightly different, where the trawl I learned was pulled using a rope wrapped around the waist towards the beach. While this was pulled in the opposite direction. Maybe, because the catch of these gentlemen is not too much and want to simplify the work so that they don't have to bother washing the trawl net anymore.
I know a little about how this inshore trawl gear works from my lectures. I will try to explain it briefly. When setting up an inshore trawl, the trawl net is pulled using a small boat in a circle about 500 meters from the shoreline in a circular shape. The installation of the trawl net follows the sea current. Then, the trawl net is pulled in as I have described before, with both the left and right sides of the trawl net pulled in from the land. The trawl rope is usually wrapped around the waist and pulled in rhythm with the footsteps until the trawl comes ashore.
Back to my experience, after helping the men pull the trawl, we were given a basket of fresh fish from the land-based trawl catch. We happily accepted it and cooked it together for lunch. This was an unforgettable experience for me.
How was your weekend experience, guys?
