With only 16 days left until the Gamedev.JS Jam 2024, that's right, the Game Jam that many of us indie game developers / enthusiastic programmers have been eagerly awaiting is about to start in April, and I couldn't miss sharing all the details with you here in my little blog corner on the Hive network.
A Game Jam is an event where developers create a game within a short period of time, following a surprise theme. It's a coding marathon that promotes creativity, learning, and collaboration among programmers, designers, and artists.
For those not yet in the know, the Gamedev.JS Jam is an incredible opportunity for indie game developers to showcase their talent and creativity. The jam will run from April 13th to April 26th, giving us nearly two weeks of intense development. And the cherry on top? The challenge to create a game that runs in HTML5. That's right, the focus is on web game development, but with a cool detail that I must mention here, it's not mandatory to use JavaScript exclusively, although it is highly encouraged by some of the Jam's sponsors, the idea is to see how far our creativity and skills can take us using these technologies.

Now, let's talk about the most exciting part for many of us, like me, the competition and the rewards. Firstly, the way the games will be judged is quite democratic and inclusive since we will have a public voting system as well as a specific jury, made up of professionals and experts in the field, ensuring that all aspects of the games are fairly assessed. This means that in addition to having a chance to win prizes, we will also have the opportunity to receive valuable feedback from people who really understand the subject.
Continuing on the awards, the Gamedev.JS Jam 2024 is not kidding around this year. The best projects will be rewarded with a huge package of licenses that includes software, games, editors, and many other resources that can be extremely useful for us indie developers. Not to mention the awards from the sponsors, which include big names like GitHub and Phaser, as well as other successful developers who are contributing to make this jam even more special.
The awards provided by Phaser Studio consist of:
- 4 × $250 in cash
- 10 × Vampire Survivors pack (game + 3 DLCs each)
Participating in a game jam like the Gamedev.JS Jam is more than just a chance to win prizes; it's an incredible opportunity for personal and professional growth. It's our chance to put our skills into practice, experiment with new ideas, learn a lot in the process, and of course, connect with other developers who share the same passion for creating games. Although I personally prefer to create some things on my own, you can do it however you prefer.
The focus on HTML5 (or just that it works in the browser) opens up a huge range of creative possibilities since the games need to run on this platform, we are being encouraged to think outside the box and explore the potential of web development for games. This can include everything from innovative game mechanics to the use of emerging web technologies that we might not consider in other contexts.
Any software engine that can export to HTML5 is allowed.
Some good options that I would recommend are: GameMaker Studio 2(My choice) - Unity - Godot - Unreal - Cocos - Phaser - GDevelop)
Remember, there are awards for those more challenging and specific like: LittleJS, Kontra, Love2D.
Now, speaking a bit of my personal opinion, I am more than excited to participate in the Gamedev.JS Jam 2024, for me, events like this represent the heart of the indie game development community, a shared passion for creating, a collaborative spirit, and an incessant will to push our limits. Moreover, I think competitions of this sort are an excellent way to receive constructive feedback, learn from other participants, and, of course, gain visibility in the indie game development scene.
But what really excites me is the chance to be part of such a vibrant and creative community during these two weeks of the jam. Exchanging ideas, facing challenges together, and seeing what everyone can create under the same constraints is a unique and enriching experience. And, of course, the possibility of winning prizes that can significantly help in the development of future projects is a great incentive. (I would love to get the license for the software Pyxel Edit).
In summary, the Gamedev.JS Jam 2024 is more than a competition; it's a celebration of creativity, innovation, and the community spirit that defines the indie game development world. If you're thinking about participating, my message is to just go for it. Even if you don't win, the experiences you'll accumulate, the people you'll meet, and what you'll learn in the process are, in themselves, invaluable rewards. Faltando apenas 16 dias para a Gamedev.JS Jam 2024. Agora, vamos falar sobre a parte mais emocionante para muitos de nós como eu, a competição e as recompensas. Além do mais, acho que competições desse tipo são uma maneira excelente de receber feedback construtivo, aprender com os outros participantes e, claro, ganhar visibilidade no cenário indie de desenvolvimento de jogos.
Mas o que realmente me deixa animado é a chance de fazer parte de uma comunidade tão vibrante e criativa durante essas duas semanas de jam. Trocar ideias, enfrentar desafios juntos e ver o que todos conseguem criar sob as mesmas restrições é uma experiência única e enriquecedora. E, claro, a possibilidade de ganhar prêmios que podem ajudar significativamente no desenvolvimento de futuros projetos é um incentivo e tanto. *(Eu adoraria obter a licença para o software Pyxel Edit.
Em suma, a Gamedev.JS Jam 2024 é mais do que uma competição; é uma celebração da criatividade, da inovação e do espírito comunitário que define o mundo do desenvolvimento indie de jogos.
