As the captain of the basketball team, I announced the name of the school. I was cool, popular, everyone respected me. So when I put the bets on how many days the new teachers could last, nobody thought it wrong.
When we managed to dispatch the last teacher in an hour, all the school management did was say we should be more polite. They were afraid of us because I made the majority of them think like me, and they didn't want their money skis to come to harm. With so many candidates ready to start the profession, such events did not matter.
But yesterday, things did not go as I had hoped. The new mathematician was the daughter of a poor woman who lived there. I knew they needed the money. My conscience knew. Yes, I had a conscience too. He had waited for the right time to wake up. Because I was smarter than my conscience. I managed to fool him every time! I couldn't stand it and wanted to give up. But the bets were always placed before the new teacher arrived.
It was the teacher's first lesson. But the first things he taught were not about math. He talked about the difficulties of life and the need to struggle. I didn't go too far to keep my conscience quiet and to protect my authority.
“We thought you were a math teacher, you turned out to be a life science teacher!” I tried to save the day by saying. The class burst into laughter, and the teacher's eyes filled with tears.
I was one of those who laughed. It was the first time I learned what it felt like to laugh while crying inside.
After school, I wandered around the secluded streets. I wanted to disappear. When I couldn't do this on my own, I asked for help from the streets. My intelligence wouldn't let me get lost. Every time I managed to find the way. I couldn't be so stupid that I didn't know what I had to do to get out of the situation I was in!
I was going to lose this time, everyone in the class would lose... If I tried to lose instead of trying to get lost, I would be successful.
With the decision of my joy, I took a few quick steps towards the opposite road and couldn't notice the oncoming car... Fortunately, I wasn't in the hospital when I opened my eyes. It was morning. I made my way to school safe and sound.

Basketbol takımının kaptanı olarak okulun adını duyurmuştum. Havalıydım, popülerdim, herkes bana saygı duyuyordu. O yüzden yeni gelen öğretmenlerin kaç gün dayanabileceğiyle ilgili bahisleri açtığımda kimse bunu yanlış bulmuyordu.
En son gelen öğretmeni bir saatte göndermeyi başardığımızda okul yönetimin tek yaptığı şey daha nazik olmamız gerektiğini söylemekti. Büyük çoğunluğun benim gibi düşünmesini sağladığım için bizden çekiniyor, para kayaklarına zarar gelsin istemiyorlardı. Mesleğe başlamaya hazır onca aday varken bu tür olayların önemi yoktu.
Fakat dün işler hiç umduğum gibi gitmedi. Yeni gelen matematikçi bizim orada yaşayan yoksul bir kadının kızıydı. Paraya ihtiyaçları olduğunu biliyordum. Vicdanım biliyordu daha doğrusu. Evet, benim de bir vicdanım vardı. Uyanmak için doğru zamanı beklemişti. Çünkü ben vicdanımdan daha zekiydim. Her seferinde onu kandırmayı başarıyordum! Dayanamayıp vazgeçmek istedim. Ama bahisler daima yeni öğretmen gelmeden açılırdı.
Öğretmenin ilk dersiydi. Ama öğrettiği ilk şeyler matematikle ilgili değildi. Hayatın zorluklarından ve mücadele etmek gerektiğinden bahsetmişti. Vicdanımın sesini kısabilmek, otoritemi koruyabilmek için fazla ileriye gitmedim.
“Biz sizi matematik öğretmeni sanıyorduk, siz hayat bilgisi öğretmeni çıktınız!” diyerek günü kurtarmaya çalıştım. Sınıf kahkahalara boğulmuş, öğretmenin gözleri dolmuştu.
Kahkaha atanlardan biri de bendim. İçinden ağlarken kahkaha atmanın nasıl bir duygu olduğunu ilk defa öğreniyordum.
Okul çıkışı tenha sokaklarda dolaştım. Kaybolmak istemiştim. Kendi içimde bunu başaramayınca sokaklardan yardım istemiştim. Zekam kaybolmama izin vermiyordu. Her seferinde yolu bulmayı başarıyordum. İçinde bulunduğum durumdan kurtulmak için yapmam gerekeni bilmeyecek kadar aptal olamazdım!
Ben kaybedecektim bu kez, sınıftaki herkes kaybedecekti... Kaybolmaya çalışmak yerine kaybetmeyi denersem başarılı olurdum.
Verdiğim sevincin kararıyla karşı yola doğru birkaç hızlı adım atınca karşıdan gelen arabayı fark edemedim... Gözlerimi açtığımda neyseki hastanede değildim. Sabah olmuştu. Sapasağlam ve mutlu bir şekilde okulun yolunu tuttum.
Sınıfa girdiğimde herkesin suratı asıktı. Acaba öğretmen gitti mi diye dehşete kapıldım. O anda sınıfın içini saran çiçek kokuları geldi burnuma. Her masanın altına gizlenmiş çiçekler vardı. Dün kahkaha attığım sırada içimden ağladığımı görmüştü herkes demek ki. Hepsi benim gibi pişmandı. Büyük bir sevinç kapladı içimi.
Hemen gidip yerime oturdum. Çok geçmeden Müdürümüz girdi içeriye. Okuldaki bütün öğretmenler onun arkasından geldi. Onlar da çiçek getirmişti. Gözüm matematik öğretmenimizi aradı. Elinde tuttuğu çiçeğe gözyaşları damlıyordu.
Müdürümüz elindeki çiçeği benim masama bıraktı. Ardından diğer öğretmenler aynısını yaptılar. Matematik öğretmenimize sıra geldiğinde,
“Bu çiçekler sizin için” dedim. Yüzüme bile bakmadan elinin tersiyle gözlerini sildi. Arkadaşlarım da çiçek bıraktılar masama. Bağıra bağıra soruyordum artık. Hiçbiri duymuyordu beni. Elimi hızla masama vurup çiçekleri dağıtmak istedim. Fakat çiçekler hareket etmedi. Aptal bir ölü olduğumu fark ettim sonra. Aptal ve geç kalan bir ölü…
