Alright kids, I will be going to the mall to get some groceries and beverages. Does anybody want anything? I just asked, not like I meant it.
Yes, came their voices echoing in unison. I held my head; that wasn't the outcome that I was expecting. Now I'm trapped, and there is no way out of it.
Alright, you are only allowed to mention just one thing that you need and nothing else. So I am going to advise you to think hard enough. Once you mention it, there's no going back. Is that clear, I asked?
They were all quiet for a while, whispering in each other's ears like bees. I shouted, "I'm still waiting, and you all have one minute remaining or I will cancel it and leave to go buy the groceries."
Auntie, you will buy a car for me, Kofi muttered.
I raised an eyebrow and looked at them all before the next person could try to mention his own demand. I paused, then immediately I said.
You all listen up, you are not allowed to make any ridiculous demands like a big toy car, water gun, or bicycle. In fact, you should only ask me for edible stuff. Anyone who goes beyond that, I won't get it for them. If you want a bicycle, water gun, or toy car, you must come top of your class. I hope we are on the same page," I said with a funny smirk.
Their faces were pale and they looked quite unhappy with my new instructions. But I honestly don't care because my account balance wasn't smiling either, so I pretend not to see their pouts and funny baby faces.
It looks like nobody has a wishlist, so I will be leaving immediately. Kofi raised his hand without consulting others.
Auntie, buy me a KFC big chicken pot,' Kofi demanded, feeling satisfied with his decision. I nodded.
Who is next, going? They all started making their choices. I wrote them down, not like I was going to buy all, but I already have what I will buy for them all. While I was leaving, I left instructions: nobody should go close to the flower vase, nobody should try to open the gas to cook anything. Nobody should wake baby Kamsi up, or else that person will carry him till he sleeps again,' I said in a gentle tone.
I left for the grocery shop, but while I was trying to get some food stuff and other things, I was having a bad feeling that they might actually do something unforgettable.
So I hurried quickly and left the mall for the house. Moments after I entered the house, they were all quiet and reading their books, like nothing happened. I coughed, and they all jumped up and ran to hug me.
'Welcome auntie, how was the shopping at the mall?' Tonye said giggling mischievously.
'Auntie, did you buy the KFC for me?' Kofi stuttered like someone who is trying to hide something.
I looked at each of their faces, and my eyes were scanning the room for signs of trouble. My nieces and nephews were sitting quietly, looking innocent.
But I know them, they can't be this quiet and obedient. Soon enough, my gaze landed on the broken vase, the spoiled remote and I knew I had my culprits already.
'Who did this?' I asked, pointing at the broken flower vase on the floor that was covered with a tablecloth, at the same time trying to hide a smile.
I know they can't be this quiet for no reason. The children exchanged nervous glances before one of them piped up, 'It was an accident, Auntie!'
I just raised an eyebrow. 'An accident? With five witnesses and no one to blame? That means nobody will be receiving what I bought.'
'No, auntie, it was Tonye and baby Kamsi that broke it by mistake,' Kofi spilled without minding the silent look from others to keep quiet.
'Is there something else that I need to know before I discover it myself, cause I can smell a rat,' I scoffed. The children giggled, and I couldn't help but laugh. 'Alright, alright. Let's hear it.'
'We burnt a pot of noodles, but it was just small,' Maureen stammered, looking at the others as they nodded in agreement.
I just shook my head and then asked, 'Who's going to help me clean up?'
The children all decided to help clean up the broken vase; they couldn't stop giggling. One of them, little Kamsi, kept slipping on the floor, making the others laugh even harder. As I discovered that the even spill water on the floor.
I smiled, "You know, I used to be just as mischievous when I was your age." I handed each child a piece of the broken vase to carefully place in the trash bag.
When we finished, I suggested they make a new vase together. "Let's them be creative and make something even better!"
The children's eyes lit up, and they eagerly gathered materials for a fun craft session. I left them to prepare dinner.
