It was a cold and calm evening, and I was on my way to meet some friends for drinks at a bar. As I walked down the busy street contemplating what to get for the occasion, I noticed someone approaching me from the opposite direction on the other side of the road. It was a lady with a medium length black skirt and a stylish blue coat, and she looked like she was in a hurry.
I was surprised, because Jenny is never one to be in a rush. She's one of those we would call "slay queen" in local parlance. She's never in a rush no matter the situation, always paying particular attention to her looks and how she's perceived.
Without thinking, I waved my hand and shouted, "Hey, Jenny, what's up?", running over to the other side of the road. The lady didn't respond, so I had to grab her by the hand to halt her rush. That was when she turned around and to my utter horror, the lady looked at me with a confused expression.
"I'm sorry, do I know you?" she asked.
That was when I knew that I had messed up, so I quickly released her hand and started stuttering at my words. I had mistaken this lady for my friend Jenny, who had a similar skirt and coat. I felt my face turning red as I tried to come up with an excuse.
"Oh, sorry about that," I said. "You just look a lot like a friend of mine. Her name is Jenny, and she always wears a coat like that." I added nervously looking around as if looking for avenues to scamper away, because for a truth, that was what was on my mind.
The lady nodded skeptically, but didn't say anything. I could tell she was still a bit suspicious as it was getting dark and the spot we stood was a little secluded, so I tried to make conversation.
"Actually, I have a crush on my friend Jenny, so when I saw you and thought it was her, I couldn't resist the urge to talk to her" I started nervously "but then here you are, perhaps it's by divine arrangement that it's you and not Jenny" I added smiling
She looked at me with a hint of amusement, and I could feel my confidence growing. I knew then that the situation might not be as bad as it seemed before. Maybe I could turn this embarrassing situation into a funny story after all.
"I don't mean to overwhelm you though, but what's your name?" I started again.
"I'm Naomi" she replied with a little smile that seemed to instantly erase the tension.
"I'm Diikaan" I said with an outstretched hand. She took it and then asked why I didn't tell Jenny how I felt. And I replied that I did not want to spoil the good friendship that we already had by pushing for something more. And then I teased her that perhaps that was why God made our paths cross, so she could take that place in my life.
We both laughed, exchanged contacts and pleasantries and then she asked to be excused as she was trying to get home before it was too dark, as her area wasn't so secure for ladies at night. We shook hands and headed in our different directions, and from that day we became good friends.
