"Dad is it going to rain today?"
"No son, don't let the clouds deceive you. Clear skies were forecasted today."
Jubril walked back to his room sluggishly, dragging Mr cabby his best friend as he walked.
"Mr ken, why is your son so concerned about the weather?"
Asked Bernard who was a very good friend to Mr Ken, his only friend actually. Ever since they moved to Italy, Mr Ken and his son kept to themselves. They hardly stepped outside or interacted with anybody.***
Bernard's question brought back so many memories to Mr Ken. He looked at the direction of his son's room, gulped down the beer in his mug, took a long look at Bernard and gulped down a second cup hoping to drown his sorrows with the content of the mug.
"I'm sorry if my question scratched an old wound."
"It's fine," Mr Ken replied rubbing his protruding stomach. "Actually he is not really concerned about the weather, he simply hates rainy season."
"That's weird, most kids love the rainy season because it gives them an opportunity to play under the rain."
"It is quite the opposite for Jubril. Let's just say he has experienced more sadness than happiness in previous rainy days."
"Mr ken, you need to take it easy on drinking and teach your son to face his fears. Whatever incident that makes him scared of the rain obviously had an impact on you as well and whether you like it or not this young boy looks up to you. He wouldn't move on if you don't."
"I'm moving on pretty fine." Mr Ken said giving out a long disgusting belch. "My son is the one holding on to the past."
"He can't be afraid of the rain forever, besides the rainy days would set in a couple days. Anyways, I have to leave now. We don't want my wife to come here searching for me and create a scene 'Why do you spend so much time with these strangers, you barely have time for me.' Honestly that woman is scary at times."
"Why do you do it?"
"Do what Mr Ken?"
"Why do you spend so much time with such a broken family as mine."
"Oh C'mon. I can't stand by and watch my only Nigerian friends crash and burn. I'll be seeing you both tomorrow, you two be good boys now."
A family of three is walking down a dark alley, as the rain pours down heavily, they try to manage a single umbrella.
WOMAN: I told you we should have waited for the rain to stop before walking home.
MAN: Sorry love, we are almost home. Besides it's pretty late, nobody knows how long the down poured will continue.
KID: I love it mummy. I don't even need an umbrella I can walk and dance under the rain.
WOMAN: Don't be silly son. Get back under the umbrella.
As they walked, multiple sirens were heard and next thing a man in black came running towards them and quacked them apart running through their middle.
"Freeze. Don't move. Drop your weapon." Came the voice of the police man.
MAN: Easy people I don't have a weapon with me.
"Not you sir, step aside sir."
That was when the man looked back and saw his wife held at gun point by the man in black.
MAN: Oh my God! C'mon man please let my wife go. We haven't done anything. Take me as your hostage instead. I'm sure together we can work out a deal with the police.
"Stand down Sir!" The police repeated as they walked forward slowly.
MAN: Don't tell me to stand down! That's my wife right there.
"Y'all stay back or I'll end this woman. No sudden movements or she's gone." The man in black said as he kept moving backwards.
Just then a helicopter flew above his Head, the sudden movement of the helicopter made him pull the trigger and a gunshot was heard and the woman's body fell slowly to the ground as the man ran off. Just then, there was thunder and lightening and the rain became much heavier.
"Call the paramedics now!"
KID: No Ooooooooo!!!
"It's okay son. I'm right here. It was just a nightmare."
Mr Ken said as he grabbed his son who was screaming in his sleep.
"I saw him again Dad he is out there."
"Son, I'm pretty sure the law has caught up with the man that killed your Mom."
"But I see him in the shadows wherever it rains."
This is basically what Mr Ken faced whenever it rained. During the day time he complained to Bernard who simply said;
"It's just a phase, I'm sure it will pass soon."
"Aren't you going to work today?"
"No, the rains have ruined my entire plans for today. I can't believe it has been raining since midnight. Where is Jubril anyways?"
"In his room scribbling and playing with colors on his books. I think it helps calm him down whenever it rains."
A piercing scream was heard from Jubril's room. The two men got up immediately and ran to his room, to meet a scared Jubril curled up at a corner holding his book tight.
"I saw him again daddy."
"No you didn't! Jubril I can't keep doing this with you. You have to let go of mom. She is gone and never coming back. Go back to your paintings or whatever you do, just stop screaming and scaring the hell out of me."
Bernard picked up one of Jubril's painting, seeing this he said;
"Take it easy on him, he is just a scared little artist who wants a happy family."
