In the center city of Lagos whereby the traffic sometimes can be a blessing and sometimes it can be a curse, there is Engineer Tayo who always believes that he has found salvation to the traffic, the glass tunnels in the sky.
Every blessed morning, Engineer Tayo will look out of his office window and looking at the traffic in the street of Lagos. Everyone is always tired of Lagos hectic traffic.
There is a fateful day that the government announced that they have come up with a new smart idea that will improve the city of Lagos by the year 2030 most especially in the aspect of the choky traffic.
Umm, Engineer Tunde brought his big idea.
"How about we should build sky tunnels"
One of his plans was that the glass tunnels will be above the roads and so inside that glass tunnels, there will be something like small pods that will be able to carry people from one place to another faster. There will be no traffic and there will be no long wait unlike the road traffic.
"One of the things that make my idea unique is the fact that you just need to enter the pod, lie down and then it will take you to your bus stop"
He proposed the idea to the governor.
The governor loves the idea even though other leaders didn't understand it but they appreciate that idea.
So the government gave him enough money that he can use to kickstart his plans.
In just a short while, over 50 billion naira have been spent on the project.
A lot of foreign engineers actually came from different countries to look at the first tunnel that was build in Ikeja. It looked like a long plastic pipe in the sky.
When you look at the pods that will carry people to their destination, it was looking like a very big eggs and before you can use it, you must lie down flat kind of sleeping as proposed in his plan he offer to the government.
Even though the tunnel faced a lot of criticism from fellow Nigerians, Engineer Tayo was still happy about the project. He even wears a shirt that has "Sky Tunnel" written on it and still went on to TV to say.
"My fellow Nigerians, watch and see as this idea will change Nigeria forever".
Then there is this Thursday evening, trouble started.
There was this government worker that was using the sky tunnel built when the pod got stuck in the air.
A lot of Nigerians started taking pictures.
"Please dash us some money " some Nigerians were shouting.
After around 4 hours, the rescue workers was able to bring the worker down making use of a crane. The video eventually went so viral in all the social media.
Not only that, that same week, one of the tunnel burst open around Ikeja because there was hot sun.
Before you know it, a lot of people started criticising the sky tunnel projects.
"This project is a joke"
Some said "This looks like a balloon that was built "
Others said "one day, this tunnel will kill a lot of Nigerians"
News started carrying the new developments and started labelling the project as a waste of money.
This got the government attention which started an instant investigation on it. They eventually found out that the issue was caused because the materials that was used for the project was actually fake and cheap.
So everyone started blaming engineer Tayo for it. Standing in front of the camera, he said.
"All I wanted to do was just to help Lagos and Nigerians"
At the end of the day, the damage was done and the project was actually cancelled. Not only that, Tayo lost his job because of that.
At the end, the sky tunnel project was a Boondoggle.
