This is my entry for The Ink Well Prompt #109: creating a story hook
Finally, the house was being sold, it was a done deal, however, for Jennifer, it was time to get the old boxes out of the attic, it was the last thing to go. It wasn't her preference, but no one else could do it. It was dark and damp; a layer of dust rested on the boxes as if covering the grief hidden inside them. Bitter memories watered her eyes as she looked through some photo albums, an era that seemed to have slipped away with time taking its joy, a father who decided to abandon his wife and daughter for no reason. Suddenly, a creaking sound under her feet caught her attention. An expression of distress crossed her face as she discovered that the house was in worse shape than she had thought. Resigned, she decided to leave the problem to the new owner, and dealing with distressing memories was enough; unfortunately, the uncertainty of having to lower the sale price, even more, seized her and she decided to check the extent of the damage. To her surprise, she found a dark hole that seemed to lead somewhere under the loose slats.
Jennifer turned on the flashlight on her cell phone and shone the light into the secret passageway. There was a narrow spiral staircase leading down. For a second she hesitated, wondering who would have created this hidden part of the house and why. Curiosity got the better of her and she chose to descend the stairs slowly and cautiously. Who knew how safe those stairs were?
At the bottom of the stairs was a room, the air was dusty and stale, and a musty smell made her nose wrinkle in disgust. After a few moments, she found a switch on one of the walls, suddenly the dim light bulbs completely illuminated the secret room. Her heart pounded as she gazed inside, gasping for breath.
There was a large cell in the corner of the room, with thick iron bars, inside it were shackles resting on shreds of stained clothing. Her mind flew imagining the horrors that could have happened inside that room, it seemed to be a place of confinement.
Suddenly, she noticed something else in the room. There was a camera mounted on a tripod, pointed directly at the cell. Jennifer's hands began to shake as she realized that someone had been watching whoever was locked in the cell, for a moment the idea that someone might come back for the camera made her feel vulnerable and exposed. But everything was covered in dust, it had been a long time since anyone had set foot in the place.
Jennifer felt a sense of fear and unease come over her as her fingers reached for the power buttons on the camera.
Jennifer's heart skipped a beat as she realized what she was seeing.
A ferocious creature, thickly furred with large fangs was growling and howling confined within the bars, its eyes glowing with an otherworldly light. It was standing and no matter how hard it tried, the chains kept it inside the cell. As the video played, Jennifer watched in amazement as the beast transformed and took human form. It looked tired and weak as if the transformation had drained it of some of its life.
Jennifer couldn't believe what she was seeing. It was her father. A series of conflicting feelings collided within her. She had always hated her father, but she had never imagined him to be a werewolf. Despite her resentment, she couldn't help but feel compassion for him.
Jennifer knew she needed to keep her father's secret safe. She decided, then, to postpone the sale of the house. She had to look for more clues inside that hidden room that would reveal what had happened to her father and somehow find out if there was a correlation to the strange peculiarities she possessed.

Finalmente, la casa se vendía, ya era un hecho, sin embargo, para Jennifer había llegado la hora de sacar las viejas cajas del ático, era lo último por llevarse. No era de su preferencia pero no había más nadie quien lo hiciera. Estaba oscuro y húmedo; una capa de polvo descansaba sobre las cajas, como cubriendo la aflicción que escondían dentro de ellas. Los amargos recuerdos aguaron sus ojos al ver algunos álbumes de fotos, una época que pareció haberse escurrido con el tiempo llevándose su alegría, un padre que decidió abandonar a su esposa y a su hija sin motivo alguno. De pronto, un rechinido bajo sus pies llamó su atención. Una expresión de angustia cruzó su rostro al descubrir que la casa estaba en peor estado del que pensaba. Resignada pensó en dejarle el problema su nuevo dueño, lidiar con angustiosos recuerdos ya era suficiente; desafortunadamente, la incertidumbre de tener que bajar aún más el precio de venta la embargó y decidió revisar hasta donde llegaba el daño. Para su sorpresa, bajo los listones sueltos, encontró un agujero oscuro que parecía conducir a alguna parte.
Jennifer encendió la linterna de su teléfono móvil y alumbró el pasadizo secreto. Había una escalera angosta de caracol que conducía hacia abajo. Por un segundo dudó, preguntándose quién habría creado esta parte oculta de la casa y por qué. La curiosidad se apoderó de ella y decidió bajar las escaleras despacio y con cautela. ¿Quién sabe qué tan seguras eran esas escaleras?
Al final de la escalera había un cuarto, el aire estaba polvoriento y viciado, un olor a humedad hizo que su nariz se arrugara con disgusto. Tras unos instantes, encontró un interruptor en una de las paredes, de pronto las débiles bombillas Iluminaron por completo la habitación secreta. Su corazón latió con fuerza mientras contemplaba su interior, quedando sin aliento.
Había una gran celda en la esquina de la habitación, con gruesos barrotes de hierro, dentro de ella había grilletes reposando sobre jirones de ropa manchadas. Su mente voló imaginando los horrores que podrían haber sucedido dentro de esa habitación, parecía ser un lugar de confinamiento.
De repente, notó algo más en la habitación. Había una cámara montada sobre un trípode, apuntando directamente a la celda. Las manos de Jennifer comenzaron a temblar cuando se dio cuenta de que alguien había estado observando a quienquiera que estuviera encerrado en la celda, por un momento la idea de que alguien pudiera regresar por la cámara la hizo sentir vulnerable y expuesta. Pero todo estaba cubierto de polvo, hacía mucho tiempo que alguien pisara el lugar.
Jennifer sintió que la invadía una sensación de miedo e inquietud mientras sus dedos alcanzaban los botones de encendido de la cámara.
El corazón de Jennifer dio un vuelco cuando se dio cuenta de lo que estaba viendo.
Una feroz criatura, de espeso pelaje y grandes colmillos gruñía y aullaba confinada entre los barrotes, sus ojos brillaban con una luz de otro mundo. Estaba de pie y por más que lo intentaba, las cadenas la mantenían dentro de la celda. Mientras se reproducía el video, Jennifer observó con asombro cómo la bestia se transformaba y tomaba forma humana. Parecía cansada y débil, como si la transformación le hubiera quitado algo de vida.
Jennifer no podía creer lo que estaba viendo. Era su padre. Una serie de sentimientos conflictivos chocaron entre sí dentro de ella. Siempre había odiado a su padre, pero nunca había imaginado que fuera un hombre lobo. A pesar de su resentimiento no pudo evitar sentir compasión por él.
Jennifer sabía que necesitaba mantener a salvo el secreto de su padre. Decidió, entonces, postergar la venta de la casa. Debía buscar más pistas dentro de aquella habitación secreta que revelara lo que había sucedido con su padre y de alguna manera conocer si existía una correlación con las extrañas peculiaridades que ella poseía.
