This is my entry for The Ink Well Prompt #103: A Special Time
Mary was packing up her things from the residence to move in with her partner, when suddenly, George, her boyfriend, showed her a pair of old, worn-out sneakers wrinkling his face.
"Are you going to keep these?"
Mary's eyes moistened and George was speechless as he thought he had done something wrong.
The old sneakers brought back memories deep in her heart and defined who she was today.
It had been the race of her life. She was just a 16-year-old girl, much tormented by her own complexes. However, she had trained hard for several weeks for the race ahead but still needed to figure out whether she could complete it. She had decided to run the long-distance race, not to please her father, who had been a great runner in his younger days, but to prove to herself that she could not give up on her goals, of reaching the finish line.
Despite the fact that the sun was shining in the morning of that day, she could see little clouds of steam escaping from her mouth, even so, her nerves made her indifferent to the cold dawn. The air was pure and the sky was clear. It was one of the most important days of her life, and the day had finally arrived.
She was determined to do her best. She was in the starting position and took a look at the other competitors; they tensed and shook anxiously, they were experienced runners and she assumed they were very fast by the definition of their muscles, intimidating, focused on a single goal, to win the race; a chill ran down her back and she was overwhelmed by doubts, her legs began to tremble and her hands did not stop sweating.
Had the weeks of training been enough?, she hesitated.
Her eyes darted to the crowd around them, a pair of eyes in the audience bolstered her confidence, they were her father's. As she tried to overcome her conflicting thoughts, her heart skipped a beat when she heard the starting gun.
As soon as the race began, her opponents left her behind. As she ran, she felt the sun warm her skin, and the wind brushing her face. The pounding of her heart grew louder and her breathing became agitated.
What the hell was I thinking, believing I was a match for the other competitors? she thought.
Her mind began to fill with doubts and her trot slowed. For a brief moment, she thought about stopping running, but looked to the side and saw her father give her both thumbs up and flash a big smile, as he continued his pace on the other side of the dividing lines. She realized she was competing with no one but herself and her fears. It was then that she remembered what her father always told her when they trained: Despite everything that happens, enjoy every second of the race.
Soon, she forgot the other runners far ahead of her, she forgot what others would think, and she stopped listening to the voice of doubt; winning or losing the race was left behind, along with her fears and complexes.
Suddenly, she began to feel a strange sensation in her chest, as if something was urging her on. A feeling of freedom came over her as if she had let go of great weight, she stopped listening to her laments. Her trot gained strength. Then, she ran the final kilometers with all her strength and with all her soul, her heart almost bursting and her legs giving out; until, finally, she crossed the finish line.
She may not have been the fifth to finish, nor did she win the race, but she had given her all and, most importantly, she had enjoyed not only the moment but also having won her own battle.
It was an unforgettable moment for Mary, a moment full of emotion and pride for both her and her father. She could not stop smiling just like her father, who ran to her side raising his arms in victory. They hugged each other tightly for a long time. Her tears escaped from her eyes and her legs were still shaking but she was still jumping for joy next to her father.
The audience was amazed at the sudden display of joy they both had despite losing the race.
That race was much more than a simple sporting competition, it was a lesson that would stay with her for the rest of her life. Mary understood that overcoming her fears was more important than winning a thousand races. It was one of the most exciting and inspiring moments of her life.
"Of course, I do," Mary replied to George.
She took the shoes and pressed them to her chest for a moment.
"I'd love to know more about those shoes," George inquired.
"Buy me a coffee?" asked Mary with a mischievous smile.

María se encontraba recogiendo sus cosas de la residencia para mudarse junto con su pareja, cuando de pronto, George, su novio, le mostró un par de zapatillas viejas y desgastadas arrugando su cara.
“¿Vas a conservar estos?”
Los ojos de María se humedecieron y George se quedó mudo al creer que había hecho algo mal
Las antiguas zapatillas trajeron un cúmulo de recuerdos que habían sido conservados en lo más profundo de su corazón y que definían lo que hoy en día era ella.
Había sido la carrera de su vida. Era apenas una chica de 16 años, muy atormentada por sus propios complejos. Sin embargo, había entrenado duro durante varias semanas para la carrera que se avecinaba, pero aún tenía dudas sobre si podría completarla. Había decidido correr la carrera de fondo no por el hecho de complacer a su padre, quien había sido un gran corredor en sus tiempos de mozo, sino para demostrarse a sí misma que era capaz de no renunciar a sus objetivos, de llegar a la meta.
A pesar de que el sol brillaba en la mañana de aquel día, podía ver cómo escapaban nubecillas de vapor de su boca, aún así, los nervios la hacían indiferente al frío amanecer. El aire era puro y el cielo estaba despejado. Era uno de los días más importantes de su vida y, finalmente, el día había llegado.
Estaba decidida a dar lo mejor de sí misma. Estaba en posición de salida y echó una mirada hacia los otros competidores; estos se tensaban y se sacudían ansiosos, eran corredores experimentados y asumió que eran muy veloces por la definición de sus músculos, intimidantes, enfocados en un solo objetivo, ganar; un frío corrió por su espalda y la abrumaron las dudas, sus piernas comenzaron a temblar y sus manos no dejaban de sudar.
¿Habrían sido suficientes las semanas de entrenamiento?, dudó.
Sus ojos corrieron hacia la multitud que los rodeaba, un par de ojos en el público reforzaron su confianza, eran los de su padre. Mientras trataba de sobreponerse a sus pensamientos conflictivos, su corazón dio un respingo al oír el disparo de arranque.
Tan pronto la carrera comenzó, sus adversarios la dejaron atrás. Mientras corría, sentía como el sol calentaba su piel, el viento rozaba su rostro. El palpitar de su corazón se hizo más fuerte y su respiración agitada.
¿Qué demonios pensaba al creer que era rival para los otros competidores?, pensó.
Su mente comenzó a llenarse de dudas y su trote disminuyó. Por un breve momento pensó en dejar de correr, pero miró a un costado y vió a su padre levantar ambos pulgares y dibujar una gran sonrisa, mientras seguía su paso al otro lado de líneas divisorias. Se dio cuenta que no competía con nadie más que contra ella misma y sus miedos. Fue entonces que recordó lo que su padre siempre le decía cuando entrenaban: A pesar de todo lo que suceda, disfruta cada segundo de la carrera.
Pronto, olvidó a los otros corredores que tenía muy por delante, olvidó lo que pensarían los demás, dejó de escuchar la voz de la duda; ganar o perder la carrera quedó atrás, junto a sus miedos y complejos.
De repente, comenzó a sentir una extraña sensación en su pecho, como si algo la impulsara a seguir adelante. Un sentimiento de libertad la embargó, como si hubiera soltado un gran lastre, dejó de escuchar sus lamentos. Su trote ganó fuerzas. Entonces, corrió los kilómetros finales con todas sus fuerzas y con toda el alma, su corazón casi estallaba y sus piernas no daban más; hasta que, finalmente, cruzó la línea de meta.
Quizás no fue ni la quinta en llegar, tampoco ganó la carrera, pero había dado todo de sí y lo más importante, había disfrutado no solo el momento sino el haber vencido su propia batalla.
Fue un momento inolvidable para María, un momento lleno de emoción y orgullo tanto para ella como para su padre. No podía dejar de sonreír al igual que su padre, quien corría a su lado levantando sus brazos en señal de victoria. Se abrazaron con fuerza por mucho tiempo. Sus lágrimas se escapaban de sus ojos y sus piernas aun temblaban pero aun así saltaba de alegría junto a su padre.
El público se quedó sorprendido ante la súbita demostración de alegría que tenían ambos a pesar de haber perdido la carrera.
Aquella carrera fue mucho más que una simple competencia deportiva, fue una lección que la acompañaría por el resto de su vida. María comprendió que superar sus miedos era más importante que ganar mil carreras. Fue uno de los momentos más emocionantes e inspiradores de su vida.
“Por supuesto que sí”, respondió María a George
Tomó los zapatos y los apretó contra su pecho por un momento.
“Me encantaría saber más acerca de esos zapatos”, inquirió George
“¿Me invitas un café?”, preguntó María con una sonrisa picara.
