I know I'm dreaming, I know this is all a dream and I'm going to wake up any minute, but I can't take it anymore. I want it all to be over, I want to wake up, I want to die, I want everything I am living in this dream to not even be able to get through to someone's mind or to have actually happened.
I am one of the survivors of the holocaust and I am in charge of a school where we are going to receive the children who were born and raised in the concentration camps. We are the last resort to make their social reintegration as satisfactory and less traumatic as possible. Is it possible to change the habits of children who have known nothing but misery? It will be difficult, but we will try and we will succeed.
Letting them know they were in a safe place from now on was not an easy thing to witness. Seeing them grabbing the food and running off to hide it for fear of having it taken away was painful, knowing that they expected to be abandoned at any moment, or to be tortured because they simply made noise while breathing. How can anyone believe that they deserve to be mistreated just because they exist?
The school had a theater where we gathered them when they wanted to play, dance and maybe act. The rigidity with which they governed their lives and their bodies was such that for a month they did nothing but sit around in fear waiting to be hurt.
Gradually they let themselves go and everyone's hope grew. They began to practice a play, I helped them as much as I could, I gave them advices, little things they could use to act better, not only there with us, but in the real world once they all had a house to come to, or an orphanage to be housed. None of them had a family member to look for them.
This is where I stop living the dream in firsthand and observe everything from a corner of the room, outside my body, watching as time passes and the children become brighter and happier, free, children again and not creatures used to mistreatment and pain. Every time I remember this the tears start to come out of my eyes and this time is no different.
We are still in the theater, the children are still practicing the play one last time before it is performed, and this time all the props needed for the stage and costumes are being used. In the blink of an eye we are no longer in the theater and we are in a mountain of chaos and destruction caused by the war. There are bodies everywhere, arms and legs without a body to be attached to.
Everything remains the same, I am standing in front of the destruction full of dust and blood, without one arm, smiling at the children while they continue to perform. I scream and nobody can hear me, I just want to wake up. I see how the children begin to disappear and become one more corpse of the place, I see how they die bled out, dismembered by the explosions and yet there are some who keep acting, laughing, smiling back at me when I congratulate them. Seeing a child's face smiling without a body is something I will never forget.
The dream did not change, did not return to what it was and no one came to observe the play. The children didn't join the society, they never had a chance. I woke up, but I will never forget something that I have not experienced, but it felt just as real.
Pesadilla en el teatro
Sé que estoy soñando, sé que todo esto es un sueño y en cualquier momento voy a despertar, pero no lo puedo soportar más. Quiero que todo acabe, quiero despertar, quiero morir, quiero que todo lo que estoy viviendo en este sueño ni siquiera pueda llegar a pasarle a alguien por la mente o que haya sucedido de verdad.
Soy uno de los sobrevivientes al holocausto y estoy a cargo de una escuela donde vamos a recibir a los niños que nacieron y crecieron en los campos de concentración. Somos el último recurso para que su reinserción social sea lo más satisfactoria y menos traumante posible. ¿Es posible cambiarle los hábitos a unos niños que lo único que han conocido es la miseria? Será difícil, pero lo vamos a intentar y lo vamos a lograr.
Hacerles saber que estaban en un lugar seguro a partir de ahora no fue algo sencillo de presenciar. Ver cómo agarraban la comida y salían corriendo para esconderla por miedo a que se la quitaran fue doloroso, saber que esperaban ser abandonados de un momento a otro, o ser torturados porque simplemente hacían ruido al respirar. ¿Cómo alguien puede creer que merece ser maltratado solo por existir?
La escuela contaba con un teatro donde los reuníamos cuando ellos querían para jugar, bailar y quizás actuar. La rigidez con la que regían sus vidas y sus cuerpos era tanta que durante un mes no hacían más que sentarse llenos de miedo esperando a ser lastimados.
Poco a poco se fueron soltando y la esperanza de todos crecía. Comenzaron a practicar una obra, yo los ayudaba lo más que podía, les daba consejos, pequeñas cosas que podían usar para actuar mejor, no solo ahí con nosotros, si no en el mundo real una vez todos tuvieran una casa a la que llegar, o un orfanato donde ser alojados. Ninguno tenía un familiar que los buscara.
En este momento es donde dejo de vivir el sueño en primera persona y observo todo desde una esquina de la habitación, fuera de mi cuerpo, observando como el tiempo transcurre y los niños cada vez son más luminosos y felices, libres, niños otra vez y no criaturas acostumbrados al maltrato y el dolor. Cada vez que recuerdo esto las lágrimas comienzan a salir de mis ojos y esta ocasión no es diferente.
Seguimos en el teatro, los niños siguen practicando la obra una última vez antes de su presentación, y está vez se está usando toda la utilería necesaria para el escenario y el vestuario. En un parpadeo dejamos de estar en el teatro y nos encontramos en una montaña de escombros y destrucción causada por la guerra. Hay cadáveres por todos lados, brazos y piernas sin un cuerpo al que estar unidos.
Todo sigue igual, yo estoy frente a los escombros lleno de polvos y sangre, sin un brazo, sonriéndole a los niños mientras ellos siguen haciendo su representación. Grito y nadie me puede escuchar, solo quiero despertar. Veo como los niños comienzan a desaparecer y se convierten en un cadáver más del lugar, veo cómo mueren desangrados, desmembrados a causa de las explosiones y aún así hay algunos que se mantienen actuando, riendo, sonriéndome de vuelta cuando los felicito. Ver el rostro de un niño sonriendo sin tener un cuerpo es algo que no voy a olvidar jamás.
El sueño no cambió, no volvió a lo que era y nadie llegó a observar la obra. Los niños no se unieron a la sociedad, nunca tuvieron una oportunidad. Yo desperté, pero nunca voy a olvidar algo que no he vivido, pero se sintió igual de real.
