INTRODUCTION
How could you possibly imagine someone who was left alone in a completely far-flung place like desert without food, shelter, or even water, with only the risk of the wild?
Hello, dearest fellow hive. I am back with a real story that is heart-wrenching. This is another compelling account of a man who miraculously survived in one of the scariest uninhabited desert places in Australia. To astound on his pathetically horrific story, just soak in for a minute to browse through it.
UNTHINKABLE TRAGEDY
Ricky Megee is an Australian who became famous around the circle of the earth due to his fatal 71-day survival in May 2006 in Outback Australia, one of the most isolated places in the world. He was traveling at that time, crossing the Northern Territory and Western Australia, when he saw several men approaching in his direction with signs asking for help.
With a wrinkling head indicating his curiosity about what was going on, he halted his car near them. Upon conversation, he knew that these men were having a car breakdown. Without thinking twice, he permitted them to have a hitch on his car and drove them to the nearest town to seek immediate help. Moments have passed since he suddenly began to feel dizzy and fainted; that was the last thing he could remember.
He woke up to the burning sensation of the scorching heat of the sun with nothing in himself, not even his last undergarment. While he was trying to recall what happened earlier, he felt lightheaded and still could not recall the chain of events. Haven under a small tree, he sat there for hours thinking of what to do in a place of no water, no food, no shelter, no body covering, and nobody else but himself—a lonely, solitary life.
Until he made up his mind to begin walking in a direction he knew not where but with a goal in mind to reach a source of water to at least quench his thirst and might have found help. But it was as if he were walking endlessly to a place of complete strangeness. Every morning, he had an expectation on his mind of finally being able to find someone to leg him up, but as the night fell, hopelessness crept in place of expectation. Everything seemed like an unending journey of pointlessness.
Unfortunately, rainy days had passed, which added to his desperate situation. With this account, he had nothing at all but to force himself, on his own volition, to futilely believe that he had to procure something essential for survival in the season of drought.
A long, distressful week had run by, and Ricky was starving to death (ug maynalang gani ky gi agda gyud ang butiki sa kahitas an ba, nga magpaduol ni niya). At last, a lizard, by intent, moved towards his way. He grabbed the stunned creature, sun-dried it for a few hours, and ingested it up.
EATING EXOTIC TO SURVIVE
Alternating, very long, hellish red-hot days and chilly nights in the wilderness glided by, and he learned to eat the desert's goods like plants (palatable to taste), reptiles like frogs, even leech, and other dispersing creeping things. Despite its danger of having gulped poisonous one, God forbid, not a single one came to pass. It was so terrible when he even drank his own piss. 😢
DEATH DOOR FATE ACCEPTANCE
However, his extreme onerous exhaustion and great loss due to a rare deadly challenge in an unsurviving warring field called the Outback Desert gradually made Ricky on the verge of losing his fight in the middle of the desert. He was unstoppably dying of severe malnutrition. His worst condition was prolonging his agony to death.
DECIDING TO KEEP FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL
Waiting for his final breath, he still began to step on another round of fight while he managed to grasp his breath with forloning grief and sigh, a sound he could only hear besides the deafening sound of the place as he went on to unsnappy walking, still searching for a permanent spring of water to settle on.
Knowing the fact that his nearly expiring confidence to be rescued was deeply swallowed up by the truth that his strength was depletedly sinking rapidly would mean he could not make it to survive, he mentally framed a plan. When he was able to find water springs, with his remaining strength, he assembled up a cross (utilizing available resources like sharp stones etc.) as planned and marked his humpy shelter as his grave on purpose that someday his family would find his remains on that spot as his only concluding wish.
A SPARK OF HOPE
A light at the end of the tunnel. When least expected, in those times, it came to pass that a group of men called Jackaroos, working on sheep and cattle stations near Katherine, Northern Territory, discovered his pitiful and horrible condition and were saved and taken to Darwin Hospital for emergency medical attention and was later reunited to his family and friends. Ricky Megee was marvelously rescued—very thin, very weak, very tired, but alive!
REFLECTION
He survived for a reason
Nevertheless, as we keep our spirit charged with willful fortitude to keep wrestling for life so as to flip through the next purposeful chapter where life is meaningfully prepared to be an advocate of survivorship, we can learn to cherish those humps and bumps in life.
Ricky's historically peculiar story simply brought us to the realization that life is both a thorn and a clover. We are sometimes left empty (thorns), but God is close to broken hearts. He sent significant others into our one-hand hanging cliffs to bring us to our rescue. (clover) As human being we are pliant to running away unhappy moments and chasing on blissfulness. But let us be reminded that life must spend fluctuating between these two extremes to warrant a generational legacy worth celebrating.
