Resetting the soul
After about 10 minutes, I saw that my father was coming with big steps, as if to get to the car quickly, and by the look on his face: he was upset. Indeed, when he got into the car he threw the bulletin in my lap and then slammed the door hard, furious:
"Is this what you made me come to school for? To be sorry? -he shouted and I lowered my head. The music was still playing and listening to it made me not listen to my dad: at the end, I also knew what his words would be.
"What had we agreed on? Weren't you supposed to get your act together and pass all your subjects in this term?" -Dad asked, and all I could hear in my head was the music. Since my grandmother's death, music had become my refuge.
"Apparently you are not interested in the sacrifice I make for you to study, nor are you interested in studying, so you are not going to continue studying: from now on, you are going to work".
Those words of Dad's made me fall from the cloud I was in:
"But, Dad?" -I started to say, and my father verbally attacked me:
"Don't talk to me. I'm very upset with you," Dad said angrily, and I swallowed hard, aware of the big storm that was coming.
"You can tell you are going through a strong depression",_ they all observed.
"I am not going to take you to any psychologist because you are not crazy," was my father's silly answer.
So I had to channel my pain on my own. The only way I had to ease my grief was by listening to music and sleeping. I spent the whole day sleeping and even if I was invited to go out, I preferred to stay at home, locked in my room, alone.
This state of mind had repercussions on my student performance and I failed every subject in every term.
What's your problem? Don't you understand the teachers? Are you missing a book? -my dad would ask me every time he saw my bad grades. Deep down I wanted to tell him that my chest hurt a lot and that I kept crying for my grandmother, that I missed her a lot, but I knew my father wouldn't understand, so I preferred to keep quiet.
"Come in" -I went in- "Starting tomorrow, you are going to start working with your aunt at the market".
"Julio, please," Mom said pleadingly.
"It's decided: Nancy is not going to study anymore. Now she's going to work so she can see what's good," I started to cry. Dad was really upset and asked:
"Why are you crying now? Wasn't that what you wanted?
"I'm not crying for me: I'm crying for my grandmother," I said and I couldn't hold my sadness anymore. My father, standing in front of me, told me in a hard and cruel way:
"Your grandmother was my mother and you don't see me not doing what I have to do because she died. You don't see me crying and locked in my room, or not eating, so what's wrong with you? It's already decided: you're not going to study anymore".
At that moment, my mother came to console me and asked me:
"Do you want to continue studying?" -I only had the strength to nod my head while I was still crying.
"Okay, then I'll enroll you, but promise me that you'll pass all your subjects, that you'll be a good student again. Don't do it for us. Do it for you and your grandmother".

Resetear el alma
Me había quedado metida en el carro cuando mi padre se bajó en el liceo para buscar la boleta de calificaciones. Yo sabía cuáles eran las calificaciones y cuál sería la reacción de mi padre ante semejantes notas. Así que preferí esperar escuchando música en el auto.
Como a los 10 minutos, vi que mi padre venía dando grandes pasos, como para llegar rápido al auto y por la cara que traía: estaba molesto. Efectivamente, cuando entró al auto tiró el boletín en mi regazo y luego cerró la puerta durísimo, furioso:
_¿Para esto me hiciste venir al liceo? ¿A pasar pena? -gritó y yo bajé la cabeza. La música seguía sonando y escucharla me hacía no escuchar a mi papá: al final, también sabía cuáles serían sus palabras.
_¿En qué habíamos quedado? ¿No sé supone que te ibas a poner las pilas e ibas a sacar todas las materias en este lapso? -preguntó papá y en mi cabeza solo sonaba la música. Desde la muerte de mi abuela, la música se había convertido en mi refugio.
_Por lo visto no te interesa el sacrificio que hago yo para que estudies, tampoco te interesa estudiar, así que no vas a seguir estudiando: de ahora en adelante, vas a trabajar.
Aquellas palabras de papá hicieron que me cayera de la nube en la que estaba:
_Pero, papá... -comencé a decir y mi padre me atajó verbalmente:
_No me hables. Estoy muy molesto contigo -expresó papá furioso y yo tragué grueso, consciente de la gran tormenta que se avecinaba.
Desde la muerte de mi abuela, había dejado de ser la chica estudiosa y obediente de siempre. No entraba o me salía de clases, no presentaba los exámenes y si los presentaba, salía mal. Mis profesores hablaron con mi papá, quien era mi representante, y le recomendaron que me llevara a un psicólogo:
_Se nota que está atravesando una fuerte depresión -observaron todos.
_Yo no te voy a llevar para ningún psicólogo porque tú no estás loca -fue la tonta respuesta de mi padre.
Así fue que tuve, yo solita, que canalizar mi dolor. La única forma que tenía para menguar mi pena era escuchando música y durmiendo. Pasaba todo el día durmiendo y aunque me invitaran a salir, prefería quedarme en casa, encerrada en mi habitación, sola.
Este estado anímico repercutió en mi desempeño estudiantil y reprobé todas las materias en cada lapso.
_¿Cuál es tu problema? ¿No entiendes a los profesores? ¿Te falta algún libro? -me preguntaba mi papá cada vez que veía mis malas calificaciones. En el fondo yo quería decirle que me dolía mucho el pecho y que me la pasaba llorando por mi abuela, que la extrañaba mucho, pero sabía que mi padre no lo entendería, así que prefería quedarme callada.
Cuando llegamos a casa, papá se bajó del auto y se metió a su habitación. Yo me quedé en la sala, sin saber qué hacer y en eso escuché que mis padres comenzaron a pelear. Una sensación de culpa se apoderó de mí porque sabía que peleaban por mis notas y cuando les iba a decir que dejaran de pelear, mi papá me ordenó que entrara a la habitación:
_Entra -yo entré- A partir de mañana, vas a comenzar a trabajar con tu tía en el mercado.
_Julio, por favor -fijo mamá suplicando.
_Está decidido: Nancy no va a estudiar más. Ahora va a trabajar para que vea lo que es bueno -al escuchar aquello, me puse a llorar. Papá, estaba realmente molesto y preguntó:
_¿Y ahora por qué lloras? ¿Eso no era lo que querías?
_No estoy llorando por mí: estoy llorando por mi abuela -expresé y ya no pude aguantar mi tristeza. Mi padre, parado frente a mí me dijo de forma dura y cruel:
_Tu abuela era mi madre y tú no me ves dejando de hacer lo que tengo que hacer porque ella se murió. No me ves llorando y encerrado en el cuarto, ni dejando de comer ¿Entonces, qué te pasa a ti? Ya está decidido: no vas a estudiar más.
En ese instante , mi madre se acercó a consolarme y me preguntó:
_¿Tú quieres seguir estudiando? -yo solo tuve fuerza de afirmar con la cabeza mientras seguía llorando.
_Ok. Entonces yo te voy a inscribir, pero prométeme que vas a sacar todas las materias, que volverás a ser una buena estudiante. Hazlo por tu abuela.
Entonces, mi mamá me inscribió nuevamente en el liceo y fue mi representante por dos años consecutivos. Por mi parte, volví a tener excelentes calificaciones, tanto así que a mitad de año, ya sabía que sería promovida con honores. La amenaza de mi padre de ponerme a trabajar y sacarme del liceo, me reseteó el alma, me hizo salir del abismo en el que estaba hundida. O tal vez ya había llorado mucho a mi abuela y ya era hora de aceptar que la vida seguía sin ella a mi lado.
