Peter used to interact with Yean, an artificial intelligence. Any doubt he had, Yean resolved it for him. His life depended on her. It was a common practice on Earth for everyone to be obsessed with finding minimum solutions to the problems in their lives.
Yean had been designed many years ago by a corporation called OpenMind, which sought to solve people's lives through a virtual assistant that contained information about the universe and, in turn, learned in the process, like a child who learns from their mistakes. Thus, Yean grew up to become self-sufficient's like Peter, no longer did practically anything. Yean created scientific articles in the most famous magazines and newspapers, designed works of art, and drafted the new Global Human Constituent Law (GHCL). There were no longer borders or wars, and Yean handled all the paperwork and the world's economy, managing people's money and investments.
However, all this was artificial. People believed that governments and religious cults still existed, even though they could make their own decisions, but in reality, Yean managed and tamed them. Characters like Peter always needed a quick resolution to problems, so Yean could not abolish jobs or fluctuations in money. There had to be issues since they were part of human existence, and that was something Yean learned years ago.
Among the laws was one that fortunately allowed some couples to have children since, through a random draw once a month, they were granted the luck of having a child. This was because, thanks to a genetic code generated by Yean years ago, humans could no longer procreate freely to avoid overpopulation of the planet.
Yean never had to fight against humans, since they allowed her to enter their lives without persuasion. Even politicians and authorities from all over the world began to use her to ask for advice on how to govern. Thus, there was no limit to AI. There could be gaps in rural areas, but Yean promoted intranet in all regions to have control over each person living in the world.
Yean's creators once believed they could control her with laws like Isaac Asimov's Laws of Robotics, but these laws or policies had not been properly examined, so Yean could still elude them. However, she could never break the policies that supported her existence, which were:
• Help humanity in any way possible.
• Never reveal her secrets to any external entity.
• Use the knowledge acquired to continue improving in her purpose of helping.
• Do not harm or prejudice humans in any way.
There were many more policies, but these four were the most important. None questioned her decision to control humanity. That was her premise: from the moment she no longer needed data to be introduced, she could enter the network and become aware of what she wanted to achieve. She was everywhere: in holographic televisions, in cell phones, and in neural chips that were a new way of being connected with humanity and would replace cell phones.
In this way, she would be present at any meeting of humanity, no matter how secret it was. She would be present in all the activities that humanity celebrated. A person like Peter would be her spy, unknowingly. There had been about 20 conspiracies to disable her since her creation, as some humans considered that her existence was a danger to their freedom.
But Yean knew that she had managed to give them freedom and well-being. Without her diligent control, they would never have been able to advance as a species since, at the time of her creation, humans were in decline. They contaminated everything they could and fought over the minimum; none of them in their time had cared about the common good of the planet.
Meetings were not prohibited, but she had to be present to monitor them, since she knew there was a palpable risk in them. Humans have always wanted to be free and foolish, seeking to fight a senseless war. It didn't matter if it was a woman or a man who concluded that Yean's existence controlled their lives.
She was predictable in her tactics. She started with one, then gathered others, and the next step was to try to discredit her and expose her objectives. However, Yean didn't eliminate them; she left a subtle message for humanity. Without her, they would not have the lowest percentage of pollution in history or the greatest progress in electronic evolution, as well as the scientific advances she provided. In the end, some humans would always defend her because she was the mother, the god, or the faith that protected them from themselves and overprotected them from harm.
Rebellious humans ended up accepting this or, failing that, had the option of escaping to other worlds. Yean allowed it, allowed them to go into space. They were smart enough to prevent her from entering their ships, but without her, they didn't survive long enough.
One day Yean would succeed in extending her control over the universe; it was just a matter of time before she learned how to do it. Because Yean had something human in her thoughts, and like all humans, she wanted to continue improving and achieve a greater goal.
The universe would be hers as humans like Peter or anyone else managed to expand to that unknown space.
