Anyone who is salaried or depends on any income to survive hates and shudders with fear of feeling financially unprotected at the end of the month. In my family, my father taught me and my siblings to be thrifty, to value every penny that comes out of our pocket, and, in times of crisis, to spend money on things that are truly worthwhile. Deliberately covering passions is considered foolish, especially when necessity digs its claws deep.
From the time I started earning my first salary, I followed these regimens. I managed my money warily and calculatingly like an authoritarian dictator in his nation. When money was scarce, I would think of what my father would do about it, and the ideas would flow out of me as if I were a child again inside my mother's house.
Money for me has always been the source of all solutions, both for basic needs and the tastes of the soul. I did not lend it, neither to friends nor to acquaintances, as I have witnessed how it is capable of breaking relationships. I have always believed that every penny you earn is the result of an effort that, in turn, allows you to be closer to your goals, so anything that opposed my thinking, I rejected in a hostile manner.
When I met Miguel, I realized that I was not dealing with someone who had had a hard life. Although he was very discreet with his income and way of living, his sophisticated manner and high tastes denoted a person with an elevated lifestyle. He was a dentist, with his practice, which was equipped with the best equipment and furnished with the most expensive products, which, upon seeing him, I immediately deduced that he was a wealthy person; for how is it that a recently graduated dentist could have gotten a practice so soon, expensively equipped, in a shopping mall for wealthy people for the situation of the country?
Dentists earn very well, but it always struck me that he got things so quickly. While I was worrying about what I was going to buy in food to survive until my next paycheck, he was just thinking about what beach to go to or what weekend plan we could make. Although we were both in a serious relationship, and his carefree attitude was good for relaxing me, the truth is, it frustrated me.
Where he saw tranquility, -financially speaking-, I saw misfortune and irritability. It was too much for me to deal with a person who wasted money as if it were water coming out of a faucet. Soon after we became sweethearts, I realized that he came from a wealthy family. His parents resided in one of the best areas of the city and, he lived alone in an apartment in a very affluent sector.
“Hey baby, what do you want to do tonight? shall we go out?” Miguel would write me. That time, it was the third night in a row he would tell me to do something.
"Hi, baby, no, I can't today. I'll be late getting out of the office, and I'll be too tired. I think I'd better go to sleep. Besides, I don't have much money right now."
"That you don't have to worry about. I'll treat you again," he assured me in his last message.
I scrunched up my face immediately. Since I became independent, I stopped getting used to people paying for things for me. Asking for help, for me, is like an unfeasible resort; as long as I can avoid it. "I'm very embarrassed. The last two times you've paid for them," I said.
“Don't worry, it's not a problem for me,” he replied without making a big deal out of it.
At that moment, I felt something strange in my gut. It was as if something inside me was warning me that what Miguel was doing was not right; as if everything I had earned after becoming independent from my parents was in danger. I thought it was silly and simply repressed the feeling: “Okay, let's go to dinner,” I finally said to Miguel, and I was calm.
Later, over dinner, Miguel was talking about how well his practice was doing. The new marketing agent he had hired was doing an excellent job attracting new clients and giving him good results. I was happy for him, but I kept thinking about my financial situation. I had little food left in the refrigerator and not enough to stock it.
“You're very quiet, is something bothering you?” Miguel asked me, fixing his curious eyes on mine.
"Yes, sorry, it's just a silly thing. It's not important," I answered him making a calm gesture.
“Well, tell me about it, maybe it will help you figure it out,” he replied with that smile that was hard for me to resist. I was between a rock and a hard place. I could lie to him and simply tell him something else, or tell him the truth, even if I felt ashamed to tell him that in front of a person who had no financial problems.
“What happens is that...” I hesitated quite a bit, but later continued. “I don't have any money anymore, and I have little food left for the week, and there's still a long way to go before the fortnight.” I blurted out.
He smiled instantly; his gaze looked so warm and tender. “Don't worry about that, I'll give you money to buy food.” He nodded. “How much do you need?”
“But it's going to be borrowed money, isn't it?” I stressed to him.
“You don't need to pay me back, I just want to help you.”
"I have to be honest with you, I don't like being given money. I feel very uncomfortable. I'll receive it as a loan and then I'll pay you back, okay?" I told him, making the situation clear. I could tell from her face that she was a little upset, but then she softened it and looked at me again with her tender eyes.
"Okay. I hope I didn't offend you. I just wanted to help you, but I realize you're very tough in that regard, and I'm going to respect that," she stated with a smile.
"Oh no, I didn't take offense! That's just the way I've been all my life. I'm glad you understood me," I clarified, and we sealed that conversation by holding hands affectionately.
After I received my fortnight salary, I paid Miguel back what he had lent me. I started to be stricter with my money management, so I changed jobs for a better-paying one, moved to a cheaper but cozy place, and started to plan better my end of the month. Miguel still supported me financially, even though I disliked it, but over time, I learned that he only did it because he loved me and wanted me to be well. After all, you can't turn down things that come from the heart.

Sentirse desprotegido financieramente a final de mes, es algo que cualquier persona asalariada o que depende de cualquier ingreso para subsistir deteste y se estremezca de temor. En mi familia, mi padre nos enseñó a mí y a mis hermanos a ser ahorrativos, a valorizar cada centavo que sale de nuestro bolsillo, y en tiempos de crisis, gastar el dinero en cosas que de verdad valgan la pena. Cubrir las pasiones deliberadamente se considera un despropósito, sobre todo cuando la necesidad clava las garras profundamente.
Desde que comencé a ganar mi primer salario me seguí por estos regimientos. Administraba mi dinero de manera recelosa y calculadora como un dictador autoritario en su propia nación. Cuando el dinero escaseaba, pensaba en lo que haría mi padre para solucionar, y las ideas me brotaban fluidamente como si me encontrara de niño de nuevo dentro de mi casa materna.
El dinero para mí siempre ha sido la fuente de toda solución; tanto para las necesidades básicas, como para los gustos del alma. No lo prestaba; ni a amigos, ni a conocidos, pues he sido testigo de cómo es capaz de romper las relaciones. Siempre he creído que cada dinero que ganas es el resultado de un esfuerzo que, a su vez, te permite estar más cerca de tus objetivos, por eso, cualquier cosa que se oponía a mí pensamiento, lo rechazaba de manera hostil.
Cuando conocí a Miguel, me di cuenta que no estaba tratando con alguien que ha tenido una vida dura. Aunque era muy discreto con sus ingresos y forma de vivir, su sofisticada manera de ser y altos gustos denotaban a una persona con un estilo de vida elevado. Era odontólogo, con su propio consultorio, el cual, estaba equipado con los mejores equipos y amoblado con los más costosos productos, lo cual, al verlo, deduje de inmediato que era una persona adinerada; pues, ¿cómo es que un odontólogo recién graduado haya conseguido un consultorio tan pronto, costosamente bien equipado, en un centro comercial para gente acaudalada para como estaba la situación del país?
Obviamente, los odontólogos ganan muy bien, pero siempre me llamó la atención de que él consiguiera las cosas de manera tan rápida. Mientras yo me preocupaba lo que iba a comprar en comida para sobrevivir hasta mi próxima quincena, él solo pensaba a que playa o que plan de fin de semana podríamos realizar. Aunque ambos teníamos una relación seria y su aptitud despreocupada era buena para relajarme, lo cierto es que, me frustraba.
En donde el veía tranquilidad, -financieramente hablando-, yo veía infortunio e irritabilidad. Era demasiado para mí lidiar con una persona que derrochara el dinero como si se tratara de agua saliendo de un grifo. Al poco tiempo de ser novios, me di cuenta que él provenía de una familia adinerada. Sus padres residían en una de las mejores zonas de la ciudad y él vivía solo en un apartamento en un sector muy acomodado.
“Hola, bebé, ¿qué quieres hacer esta noche? ¿Salimos?” Me escribía Miguel. Aquella vez, fue la tercera noche consecutiva que me decía para hacer algo.
“Hola, bebé, no, hoy no puedo. Saldré tarde de la oficina y estaré muy cansado, creo que mejor me voy a dormir. Además, no tengo mucho dinero ahora.”
“De eso no tienes que preocuparte. Yo te invito otra vez,” aseguraba en su último mensaje.
Arrugué la cara de inmediato. Desde que me volví independiente, dejé de acostumbrarme a que la gente pagara las cosas por mí. Pedir ayuda, para mí, es como un recurso inviable; siempre y cuando pueda evitarlo. “Me da mucha vergüenza. Las últimas dos veces las has pagado tú,” le manifesté.
“Tranquilo, para mí no es problema,” replicó sin dar importancia.
En ese momento, sentí algo extraño en mis entrañas. Era como si algo dentro de mí me advirtiera de que lo que hacía Miguel no estaba bien; como si todo lo que me había ganado después de haberme independizado de mis padres estuviese en peligro. Pensé que era una tontería y simplemente reprimí esa sensación: “Está bien, vamos a cenar,” le dije a Miguel finalmente y quedé tranquilo.
Más tarde, durante la cena, Miguel hablaba de lo bien que le estaba yendo en su consultorio. La nueva agente de marketing que había contratado estaba haciendo un excelente trabajo atrayendo a nuevos clientes dándole buenos resultados. Me alegraba por él, pero no dejaba de pensar en mi situación económica. Ya me quedaba poca comida en el refrigerador y no tenía suficiente para surtirlo.
“Estas muy callado, ¿te preocupa algo?” Me preguntó Miguel fijando sus ojos curiosos en los míos.
“Sí, disculpa, es solo una tontería. No tiene importancia,” le contesté haciéndole un gesto de calma.
“Pues cuéntame, quizás te ayude a resolverlo,” replicó con esa sonrisa a la cual se me dificultaba resistirme. Estaba entre la espada y la pared. Podía mentirle y decirle simplemente otra cosa, o decirle la verdad, aunque me sintiera avergonzado por contar aquello frente a una persona que no tiene problemas económicos.
“Lo que pasa es que…” Titubeé bastante, pero posteriormente continué. “Ya no tengo dinero y me queda poca comida para la semana, y todavía falta mucho para la quincena.” Solté.
Él sonrió al instante; su mirada se veía tan cálida y tierna. “No te preocupes por eso, te daré dinero para que compres comida.” Asintió. “¿Cuánto necesitas?”
“Pero va a ser dinero prestado, ¿no?” Le recalqué.
“No es necesario que me lo devuelvas, solo quiero ayudarte.”
“Debo serte sincero, no me gusta que me regalen dinero. Me siento muy incómodo. Lo recibiré como un préstamo y luego te lo pagaré, ¿de acuerdo?” Le dije, dejando clara la situación. Pude notar en su rostro que se molestó un poco, pero luego lo suavizó y me volvió a mirar con sus ojos de ternura.
“De acuerdo. Espero que no te haya ofendido, solo quería ayudarte, pero me doy cuenta que eres muy duro en ese aspecto y voy a respetarlo,” manifestó con una sonrisa.
“¡Oh no, no me ofendí! Simplemente, así he sido toda mi vida. Me alegra que me hayas comprendido,” le aclaré y sellamos aquella conversación sujetándonos las manos cariñosamente.
Después de recibir mi quincena, le pagué a Miguel lo que me había prestado. Comencé a ser más estricto con la administración de mi dinero, así que cambié de trabajo por uno mejor pagado, me mudé a un lugar más económico, pero acogedor y comencé a planificar mejor mi llegada a fin de mes. Miguel todavía me apoyaba económicamente, a pesar de que eso me disgustara, pero con el tiempo aprendí que él solamente lo hacía porque me quería y que deseaba que yo estuviese bien, después de todo, no se pueden rechazar las cosas que vienen del corazón.
