It was Halloween evening and Lilian was putting the finishing touches on her costume. The finishing touches on her tutu, made her little scaly claws vibrate with emotion.
"It's finally ready!" She exclaimed in excitement. She grabbed her costume and ran out of her room and into the kitchen.
Ernest, Lilian's father, was there roasting a chicken with his dragon breath. Smoke escaped through his nostrils as he assessed whether the food was cooked to the exact doneness. Suddenly, he heard the euphoric cry of his little dragon daughter entering the kitchen.
"Daddy! Daddy! I finished it!" shouted Lilian proudly. Ernest adjusted his glasses to look closer at his daughter's costume.
"Wow, it looks creepy!" Ernest said in his deep dragon voice. "You did a good job adding those little sparkly details, by the way, daughter, what are you going to dress up as?"
"As a ballerina..." Replied the little girl showing all her sharp teeth.
"Oh, that's terrifying!" Ernest asserted while pretending to tremble with fear. "You're going to be the scariest ballerina dragon in the town."
"I hope so," replied the girl as she laughed. "I can't wait to see what Julia, George, and Cornelius will dress up as." She said excitedly as she let out exhalations of fire from her nose.
"Surely not as scary as yours," Ernest told her fondly. "But be careful, you're not going to burn your tutu or someone else's."
"Don't worry, Dad. I know how to control my fire." Lilian assured. "Besides, I have my fire extinguisher just in case." She showed him a small device she carried in her purse.
"That's my girl! Very responsible." Ernest complimented her. "I hope you have fun with your friends. But remember to be home before midnight."
"Okay, Dad. I love you." Lilian told him as she gave him a kiss on the cheek. "See you later."
By late evening, Lilian was ready to go out and meet her friends at the entrance to the cemetery. She spotted them in the distance and gave them a shout to catch up.
Julia, George, and Cornelius smiled at the sight of their friend and were amazed at her costume.
"Wow, Lilian, are you a ballerina?" George, the vampire asked his dragon friend.
"Yes!" replied Lilian as she did several dance twirls. "I made it myself. What are you guys dressed up as?"
"I'm a frustrated accountant." hissed George as he adjusted the braces on his sharp fangs. "With my gray suit and briefcase, I'm scarier than a porcelain doll."
"Ooh, I love it!" Lilian praised.
"I'm disguised as an underpaid secretary exploited by her boss," Julia said as she shook her long purple tentacles and the lobe of her head. "With my full schedule and my coffee unpalatable, I'm sadder than a squid."
"Wow, and those blonde hairs are really scary!" Lilian asserted as she wagged her dragon tail with some trepidation. "And what are you dressed up as Cornelius?"
Little Cornelius stood up straight and pressed his paw edged with sharp claws over the center of his wolf chest. All the fur on his body was tousled to give more realism to the outfit he wore.
"I am disguised as an eccentric mathematics professor," Cornelius explained. "Because nothing is scarier than numbers." They all agreed and Lilian was quite amazed.
"Wow, you guys picked really good scary costumes," said Lilian dejectedly lowering her muzzle.
"What's wrong Lilian, why are you sad?" asked Julia placing one of her tentacles on her dragon friend's back to comfort her.
"It's just... I wanted to be the scariest of them all, but looking at your costumes, it seems I'm the least scary."
"What do you say, Lilian, if your costume is truly terrifying!" assured George approaching her friend.
"It's true! You're a ballerina, everyone knows that, of all humans, they suffer the most from always trying to be perfect and fall into many frustrations and anxieties along the way. There's nothing scarier than that." Cornelius added.
Lilian hadn't thought of it that way, she put so much thought into the physical details of her costume that she didn't think about the rest. The ballerinas weren't scared because of their dresses or how perfect they were, but because of everything they had to deal with. After reflecting on it, Lilian felt the scariest of them all and blew fire of joy.
"Come on, we have to trick-or-treat!" Julia exclaimed to her friends. The four little monsters headed for Mrs. Insmouth's house. She always gave out the best candy on the whole block, and she was never wrong about costume opinions.
The children knocked on the door and immediately Mrs. Insmouth came out to answer them.
"Trick or treat!" They all said in unison. Mrs. Insmouth flashed a smile with her flabby lips at the sight of them, her sharp little white piranha teeth glistening at the children.
"Oh, but if it isn't my favorite little monsters on the block!" Mrs. Insmouth expressed in her husky voice. "And what scary human costumes they bring. They deserve something good, so I'll give them vermin bars."

"Yes!" The children vociferated. Mrs. Insmouth reached her webbed hand of aquatic being into a sack and pulled out the bars for the children, then rested her crystalline eyes on little Lilian.
"Oh, Lilian, your costume sure is creepy. You're a ballerina, how scary..." Mrs. Insmouth expressed. That gladdened Lilian's heart and she bowed her thanks gracefully, as ballerinas would.
Along the way, everyone complimented Lilian's costume and how well-made it was.
"Hey Lilian, will you make my costume for me for next Halloween?" Julia asked. The others accosted Lilian with the same question.
The little dragon was very happy, she had achieved her goal of being the scariest. After trick-or-treating, they went to the cemetery as there was a Halloween event about scary stories. The ghosts told spooky stories about humans with sedentary lives, low-paying jobs, and people with blonde hair, light eyes, and porcelain faces. At the end of the night, after all the candy was finished, the friends said goodbye, promising to meet again next time. Lilian went home in jumps of joy, grateful to have such special friends.

¡A PEDIR DULCES
Era la tarde de Halloween y Lilian remataba los últimos toques de su disfraz. Los detalles finales de su tutú, hicieron que sus pequeñas garras escamosas vibraran de la emoción.
“¡Por fin está listo!” Exclamó de entusiasmo. Tomó su disfraz y salió corriendo de su habitación hasta la cocina.
Ernest, el padre de Lilian, se hallaba allí asando un pollo con su aliento de dragón. El humo se escapaba por sus fosas nasales mientras evaluaba si el alimento había quedado en el punto exacto de cocción. De repente, oyó el grito de euforia de su pequeña hija dragona entrando en la cocina.
“¡Papá! ¡Papá¡ ¡Lo terminé!” gritó Lilian con orgullo. Ernest se ajustó los anteojos para observar el disfraz de su hija con detenimiento.
“¡Vaya, se ve espeluznante!” Dijo Ernest con su voz profunda de dragón. “Hiciste un buen trabajo añadiendo esos pequeños detalles brillantes, por cierto hija, ¿de qué te vas a disfrazar?”
“De bailarina…” Respondió la pequeña enseñando todos sus dientes afilados.
“¡Uy, eso sí que es terrorífico!” Aseveró Ernest mientras simulaba que temblaba de miedo. “Vas a ser la dragona bailarina más espantosa de todo el pueblo.”
“Eso espero,” respondió la niña mientras reía. “Ya quiero ver de qué se disfrazarán Julia, George y Cornelius." Dijo emocionada mientras soltaba exhalaciones de fuego de su nariz.
“Seguro que no tan aterradores como el tuyo.” Le dijo Ernest con cariño. “Pero ten cuidado, no vayas a quemar tu tutú o el de alguien más.”
“No te preocupes, papá. Sé controlar mi fuego.” Aseguró Lilian. “Además, tengo mi extintor por si acaso.” Le mostró un pequeño aparato que llevaba en su bolso.
“¡Esa es mi niña! Muy responsable.” Le felicitó Ernest. “Espero que te diviertas con tus amigos. Pero recuerda estar en casa antes de medianoche.”
“Está bien, papá. Te quiero.” Le dijo Lilian mientras le daba un beso en la mejilla. “Nos vemos luego.”
Ya entrada la noche, Lilian ya estaba lista para salir y reunirse con sus amigos en la entrada del cementerio. Los vio a lo lejos y les lanzó un grito para alcanzarlos.
Julia, George y Cornelius sonrieron al ver a su amiga y se sorprendieron con su disfraz.
“¡Wow, Lilian! ¿Eres una bailarina?” Le preguntó George, el vampiro a su amiga dragona.
“¡Sí!” Respondió Lilian mientras hacía varios giros de baile. “Lo hice yo misma. ¿Ustedes de qué van disfrazados?”
“Yo soy un contador frustrado.” siseó George mientras se acomodaba los frenos de sus filosos colmillos. “Con mi traje gris y mi maletín, doy más miedo que una muñeca de porcelana.”
“Uy, ¡me encanta!" Alabó Lilian.
“Yo estoy disfrazada de secretaria mal pagada y explotada por su jefe.” Dijo Julia mientras agitaba sus largos tentáculos morados y el lóbulo de su cabeza. “Con mi agenda llena y mi café desabrido, soy más triste que un calamar.”
“¡Wow y esos cabellos rubios son muy aterradores!” Aseveró Lilian mientras agitaba su cola de dragón con algo de ansiedad. “¿Y tú de qué estás disfrazado Cornelius?”
El pequeño Cornelius se irguió y presionó su pata bordeada de garras filosas sobre el centro de su pecho de lobo. Todo el pelaje de su cuerpo estaba despeinado para darle más realismo al atuendo que llevaba.
“Yo estoy disfrazado de un excéntrico profesor de matemáticas.” Explicó Cornelius. “Porque nada da más miedo que los números.” Todos estuvieron de acuerdo y Lilian quedó muy asombrada.
“Vaya, chicos, escogieron muy buenos disfraces aterradores” Dijo Lilian con desánimo bajando su hocico.
“¿Qué te pasa, Lilian? ¿Por qué estás triste?” Preguntó Julia colocando uno de sus tentáculos sobre el lomo de su amiga dragona para consolarla.
“Es que… yo quería ser la más terrorífica de todos, pero al ver sus disfraces, parece que soy la que menos da miedo.”
“¿Qué dices Lilian? ¡Si tu disfraz es verdaderamente aterrador!” Aseguró George acercándose a su amiga.
“¡Es cierto! Eres una bailarina, todos saben que, de todos los humanos, ellas sufren más por intentar siempre ser perfectas y caen en muchas frustraciones y ansiedades por el camino. No hay nada más aterrador que eso.” Agregó Cornelius.
Lilian no lo había pensado así, se esmeró tanto en los detalles físicos de su disfraz que no pensó en lo demás. Las bailarinas no eran aterradoras por sus vestidos o lo perfectas que eran, sino por todo lo que tenían que enfrentar. Después de reflexionarlo, Lilian se sintió la más aterradora de todas y sopló fuego de alegría.
“¡Vamos, hay que pedir dulces!” Exclamó Julia a sus amigos. Los cuatro pequeños monstruos se dirigieron a la casa de la señora Insmouth. Ella siempre daba los mejores dulces de toda la cuadra, y nunca se equivocaba en las opiniones sobre los disfraces.
Los niños tocaron a la puerta e inmediatamente la señora Insmouth salió para atenderlos.
“¡Dulce o truco!” Dijeron todos al unísono. La señora Insmouth ostentó una sonrisa con sus labios fofos al verlos, sus pequeños dientes blancos y filosos de piraña relucieron ante los niños.
“¡Oh, pero si son mis pequeños monstruos favoritos de la cuadra!” Expresó la señora Insmouth con su voz ronca. “Y que disfraces de humanos tan aterradores traen. Se merecen algo bueno, así que les daré barras de sabandijas.”
“¡Si!” Vociferaban los niños. La señora Insmouth metió su mano palmeada de ser acuático dentro de un saco y sacó las barras para los niños, luego posó sus ojos cristalinos sobre la pequeña Lilian.
“Oh, Lilian, tu disfraz si que da miedo. Eres una bailarina, que aterrador…” Expresó la señora Insmouth. Aquello alegró el corazón de Lilian e hizo una reverencia de agradecimiento con gracia, como lo harían las bailarinas.
En el camino, todos halagaban el disfraz de Lilian y lo bien confeccionado que estaba.
“Oye Lilian, ¿me haces mi disfraz para el proximo Halloween?” Preguntó Julia. Los demás abordaron a Lilian con la misma pregunta.
La pequeña dragona se sentía muy feliz, había logrado su objetivo de ser la más aterradora. Después de pedir dulces, fueron al cementerio ya que había un evento de halloween sobre cuentos de terror. Los fantasmas contaban historias espeluznantes sobre humanos con vidas sedentarias, trabajos mal remunerados y personas de cabellos rubios, ojos claros y rostros de porcelana. Al final de la noche, después de terminarse todos los dulces, los amigos se despidieron prometiendo volver a verse la próxima vez. Lilian se fue en saltos de alegría hasta su casa agradecida por tener unos amigos tan especiales.
