Hours passed in the cold morning, and Helen still did not leave the window of her room. She stared at the horizon like an unreachable dream, blinded by the longings of a past life. In them, there was a man whom she could never forget. She remembered the day he left for good. Her brown eyes were locked on his. He was begging her to go with her, but Helen's heart, though she desired it, was not willing at the time.
Her father was very ill, and she could not leave him alone in that dark picture, and for that reason, in that airport lounge, she had to say goodbye to the love of her life.
Years passed, and Helen still remembers that day, wondering: What would her life be like if she had left with him? What would have become of her and her father?
As she was drowned in her nostalgic memories, she received a call from her best friend, Rebecca.
“Helen, my goodness! I've been texting you since early in the morning! What are you doing? I thought today was your day off!”
“Oh, sorry, Rebecca! I've been doing some things at home!” excused Helen, hiding the real reason for her absence. “But I'm off now, what do you want us to do?”
"Well, I told you about that antique fair in that park downtown. We should go there for a while."
"Yeah, sure, I'd love to! In an hour, do you think?"
Rebecca answered in the affirmative for the meeting. Helen took a deep breath, leaving her memories behind. She just wanted to spend a quiet day with her friend.
Arriving at the fair, Helen marveled at the number of archaic objects everywhere, from hairbrushes and combs to furniture that looked like something out of a centuries-old noble house. But one object caught her attention the most, and she went after it like a perplexed moth drawn to the light.
It was a hand mirror, beautifully ornamented with silver decorations around it. Helen looked at it closely and deduced that it might have come from the Victorian era. It was perfectly intact, without any flaws or deterioration, and the sparkle in its reflection left her mesmerized.
“Do you like this mirror?” said the seller, a jovial-looking man with a warm and pleasant face. “This mirror is very interesting, as it can grant a longing from the past that was never fulfilled.”
“Really?” Helen asked in wonderment. “That's very intriguing.” Hearing about what the mirror was doing, Helen remembered her past love again, and upon observing herself in the glass, realized that she was no longer reflected.
Suddenly, Helen was magically transported to another place. Her clothes were different, and in front of her was the love of her life on his knees, “Marcus!” She shouted excitedly.
"Helen, come with me to Andorra! We'll be so happy! I love you as much as I know you love me!"
Glancing around, Helen realized she was at the airport, and next to her, a suitcase with all her belongings. She was at the same time and place when she said goodbye to Marcus.
She looked into his eyes, those eyes full of love, and let herself be carried away by the dream of leaving with him.
“Yes, let's go!” Those were her only words, and they both boarded the plane.
Suddenly, there was another jump in time. Helen was now in a very comfortable living room. On the mantelpiece, there were photographs of her and Marcus with some children. They all looked so happy. Helen was taken aback, but then a smile came to her face. She looked at herself in a mirror that was there and saw herself older; her face and hands were wrinkled.
“Helen!” A voice in the background exclaimed her name, it was Marcus', who had also aged. She went to him and hugged him, reassuring him that it was not all a dream.
“It's your father's birthday, do you want to start now?” Whispered Marcus tenderly in Helen's ear.
“My father? He's here with us in Andorra!” Helen professed in glee.
Marcus watched her closely with strangeness. “No, my darling, I mean the prayer we will dedicate to him, are you all right?”
Helen's face darkened, erasing her smile. “What do you mean? He's not here? You mean we're going to call him?”
Marcus began to worry and looked at Helen as if something was wrong with her.
“Honey, your father is dead... Are you sure you're okay?” Replied Marcus in a calm voice. “Do you want me to call Dr. Marcial?”
Helen began to feel sad and confused, shaking her head. She sat down on one of the pieces of furniture slowly, not taking her dumbfounded eyes off Marcus.
“Since when... please tell me!” Helen replied with sharp pain in her voice.
Marcus, sensing that something wasn't right, decided to humor his wife to see if he could calm her down later.
“It was shortly after you came with me,” he revealed. “But it wasn't your fault, my love! It was the people at that clinic who didn't do enough to save him!”
That's when Helen understood it all, although she wanted to believe Marcus words, she felt a deep guilt for abandoning her father, and broke down in a loud cry that even Marcus comfort couldn't save her from.
“No!” Helen exclaimed heartbreakingly. “I should have been there! I want to see him again! I don't want this life! Not like this!”
As she said those words, everything around Helen evaporated, including her husband, and she returned to the fairgrounds at the exact moment she was holding the mirror.
“Helen! Are you okay?” Rebecca shouted, shaking her friend worriedly. Helen looked into her eyes, and then looked at the vendor; who held a sorrowful expression on his face.
“I must go!” That was all Helen said without explanation, ignoring Rebecca's screams of concern.
Distressed, she arrived at her father's house and found him there. He was quietly working in his paint shop.
"Darling! You're early, I thought I'd see you later." He said with an astonished face.
Helen, without saying a word, hugged him tightly, shedding tears of joy. Her father was confused and frightened, but far from asking for an explanation, he reciprocated that show of affection since it had been a long time since his daughter had hugged him like that.

EL ESPEJO DE LAS SEGUNDAS OPORTUNIDADES
Pasaban las horas en la fría mañana y Helen aún no se despegaba de la ventana de su cuarto. Observaba al horizonte como un sueño inalcanzable, cegada por los anhelos de una vida pasada. En ellos, había un hombre, al que ella jamás pudo olvidar. Recordó el día en que él se marchó para siempre. Sus ojos marrones estaban clavados en los de él. Él le suplicaba que se fuera con ella, pero, el corazón de Helen, aunque lo deseaba, no estaba dispuesto en ese momento.
Su padre estaba muy enfermo y no podía dejarlo solo en ese panorama tan oscuro, y por ese motivo, en esa sala del aeropuerto, tuvo que despedirse del amor de su vida.
Los años pasaron y Helen aún recuerda ese día, preguntándose: ¿Cómo sería su vida si se hubiera marchado con él? ¿Qué hubiera sido de ella y de su padre?
Mientras se ahogaba en sus nostálgicos recuerdos, recibió una llamada de su mejor amiga, Rebecca.
“¡Helen, por Dios, te he estado escribiendo desde temprano! ¿Qué estás haciendo? ¡Pensé que hoy era tu día libre!”
“¡Oh, lo siento, Rebecca, he estado haciendo algunas cosas en casa!” Se excusó Helen ocultando el verdadero motivo de su ausencia. “Pero ya estoy desocupada, ¿qué quieres que hagamos?”
“Bueno, te comenté sobre esa feria de objetos antiguos en ese parque del centro de la ciudad. Deberíamos ir un rato.”
“¡Sí, claro, me encantaría! En una hora, ¿te parece?”
Rebecca respondió afirmativamente para el encuentro. Helen respiró hondo dejando sus recuerdos atrás. Solo quería pasar un día tranquilo con su amiga.
Al llegar a la feria, Helen quedó maravillada con la cantidad de objetos arcaicos que había por doquier; desde guardapelos y peinetas, hasta muebles que parecían sacados de una casa noble de hace siglos. Pero hubo un objeto que llamó más su atención, y fue tras él como una polilla perpleja atraída a la luz.
Era un espejo de mano, hermosamente ornamentado con decoraciones de plata a su alrededor. Helen lo observó con detenimiento y dedujo que podría provenir de la época victoriana. Estaba perfectamente intacto, sin ningún defecto o deterioro, y el brillo en su reflejo la dejó hipnotizada.
“¿Le gusta este espejo?” Dijo el vendedor; un hombre de aspecto jovial, con un rostro cálido y agradable. “Este espejo es muy interesante, pues tiene la capacidad de conceder un anhelo del pasado que nunca se cumplió”.
“¿En serio?” preguntó Helen maravillada. “Eso es muy intrigante.” Al escuchar sobre lo que hacía el espejo, Helen volvió a recordar a su amor del pasado, y al observarse en el cristal, se dio cuenta que ya no se reflejaba.
De repente, Helen fue transportada mágicamente a otro lugar. Su ropa era diferente y frente a ella estaba el amor de su vida de rodillas: “¡Marcus!” Vociferó con emoción.
“¡Helen, vente conmigo a Andorra! ¡Seremos muy felices! ¡Te amo tanto como sé que tú me amas a mí!”
Al echar un vistazo a su alrededor, Helen se dio cuenta que se hallaba en el aeropuerto, y junto a ella, una maleta con todas sus pertenencias. Estaba exactamente en el mismo momento y lugar cuando se despidió de Marcus.
Lo miró a los ojos; esos ojos llenos de amor, y se dejó llevar por el sueño de irse con él.
“¡Sí, vámonos!” Fueron sus únicas palabras y ambos abordaron el avión.
Repentinamente, hubo otro salto en el tiempo. Helen ahora se hallaba en una sala muy acomodada. En la repisa, había fotografías de ella y Marcus con unos niños. Todos se veían tan felices. Helen quedó estupefacta, pero luego una sonrisa se posó en su rostro. Se observó en un espejo que estaba allí y se vio más mayor; con el rostro y las manos arrugadas.
“¡Helen!” Exclamó su nombre una voz en el fondo, era la de Marcus, quién también había envejecido. Fue hacía él y le dio un abrazo, rectificando que todo no sea un sueño.
“Es el cumpleaños de tu padre, ¿quieres que empecemos ya?” Susurró Marcus tiernamente al oído de Helen.
“¿Mi padre? ¡Está aquí con nosotros en Andorra!” Profirió Helen de alegría.
Marcus la observó detenidamente con extrañeza. “No, cariño, me refiero a la oración que le dedicaremos, ¿te encuentras bien?”
El rostro de Helen se ensombreció borrando su sonrisa. “¿A qué te refieres? ¿No está aquí? ¿Te refieres a que lo llamaremos?”
Marcus comenzó a preocuparse y observó a Helen como si algo raro le ocurriera.
“Cariño, tu padre está muerto, ¿segura que estás bien?” Replicó Marcus con voz calmada. “¿Quieres que llame al doctor Marcial?”
Helen comenzó a sentirse triste y confundida, negando con la cabeza. Se sentó en uno de los muebles despacio, sin despegar sus ojos anonadados de los de Marcus.
“Desde cuándo… ¡por favor, dímelo!” Replicó Helen con agudo dolor en su voz.
Marcus, al sentir que algo no estaba bien, decidió seguirle la corriente a su esposa para ver sí después podía calmarla.
“Fue poco tiempo después de que te vinieras conmigo,” reveló. “¡Pero no fue tu culpa mi amor! ¡Fueron los de esa clínica los que no hicieron lo suficiente para salvarlo!”
Allí fue cuando Helen lo entendió todo, aunque quería creer en las palabras de Marcus, sintió una profunda culpa por haber abandonado a su padre, y se derrumbó en un fuerte llanto al que ni el consuelo de Marcus la pudo salvar.
“¡No!” Exclamó Helen desgarradoramente. “¡Debí estar allí! ¡Quiero volver a verlo! ¡No quiero esta vida! ¡Así no!”
Al decir esas palabras, todo alrededor de Helen se evaporó, incluyendo a su esposo, y volvió al lugar de la feria, en el momento exacto en que sostenía el espejo.
“¡Helen! ¿Estás bien?” Gritaba Rebecca, agitando preocupada a su amiga. Helen la miró a los ojos, y luego observó al vendedor; quién sostenía en su rostro una expresión de pena.
“¡Debo irme!” Fue lo único que Helen dijo sin dar explicaciones, ignorando los gritos de preocupación de Rebecca.
Angustiada, llegó a la casa de su padre y lo halló allí. Él se hallaba tranquilo trabajando en su taller de pintura.
“¡Cariño! Llegaste temprano, pensé que te vería más tarde.” Dijo él con cara de asombro.
Helen, sin decir una palabra, lo abrazó fuertemente derramando lágrimas de alegría. Su padre estaba confundido y asustado, pero lejos de pedirle una explicación, le correspondió aquella muestra de afecto ya que hacía mucho tiempo que su hija no lo abrazaba de esa manera.
