When I was in college, I had the typical group of friends with whom I would get together to chat after class, have a snack in the cafeteria along with a frothy latte. Then we would go to the plaza to gossip about the most recent and amusing events.
My routine was always from home to college; I had nothing more to add. I was not a very party or outgoing person; on the contrary, I preferred the shelter of the four walls of my room. When I was tired of studying, I liked to take my pen and write fiction stories with a philosophical moral. I would make ‘fanfics’ of my favorite characters from serials and then add a very satisfying fantasy twist to them.
Once, I did a story about Light Yagami from Death Note, creating a completely different plot from what the last season would have been like, then I would diversify the stories, creating my characters wrapped in a philosophical plot, based on the things I read and my perception of the world.
I filled a notebook halfway with all those stories, which I no longer own today, but how I would have loved to read them again to remember old times.
One day, while I was waiting in the university square to enter classes, I observed a group of gothic kids reciting poems outdoors. Their beautiful way of reciting them completely caught my attention, and I went closer to them to listen better as they recited new poems. At the end, one of them began to relate a fictional story written by him, based on a short story by Edgar Allan Poe.
“Do you like stories?” One of the Goth girls asked me. It was so sudden, I took a startled step back.
“Uh... Yes..., I like them a lot,” I answered shyly. “I also like writing stories.”
“Do you have one there for you to read to me?” She asked with intrigue.
"Oh no, I'm sorry. I didn't bring my notebook."
“Too bad...” she snorted. "My name is Susana, and these are my friends. Every afternoon we meet at four o'clock in the FACES garden to recite poems and tell stories, maybe you can come over so I can relate one of your tales."
“I'd love to!” I said excitedly, but only for the moment, as I had stage fright.
“Here, have my mail,” she offered, "so you can send me one of your stories. I like to read amateur writers." She confessed with a smile.
She made me laugh with her comment. At that moment, I glanced at the clock on my cell phone and realized I was already late. I said goodbye and shot off to my class.
That same night, in my room, I was sitting in front of the computer drafting one of my best stories to send to Susana, but I was so insecure that any criticism made me feel very small.
Without looking at the keys and with an adrenaline rush, I sent her the file with a huff. I was nervous. I didn't know if she was going to read it that night. Maybe she does read it, I thought, it's still too early, I didn't give the matter any more thought, so I set about studying to think of something else.
The next day, I hadn't received any response from Susana. I assumed that she had not liked my story. I was a bit sad, as I was flattered to know that someone was interested in the things I wrote. It was a very nice feeling, and although it did not materialize as I would have liked, it inspired me to motivate my imagination to create new stories.
That evening, when I got home, I checked my email to see if I had received any new material from the university, and to my surprise, I found an email from Susana, which said that she was amazed with the story I had sent her, and that she could tell it in front of her friends at the FACES garden tomorrow.
It made my heart happy, but it also made me very nervous. Relating in front of a group of people was not an appealing idea to me; I even wanted to avoid it, but then I thought that if I didn't do it, I would risk losing the one person who was interested in my writing at the time.
I felt stuck, but the next morning, after thinking it over, I decided to do it. At four o'clock in the afternoon, I went to the FACES garden where Susana and her friends were, but I had forgotten a very important detail: I left the story I was going to tell them at home. When I confessed it to her, she just smiled and told me:
"Don't worry! I printed several copies for me and my friends. We all liked your story, but we want the original author to retell it for us."
Everyone looked at me, smiling, and gave me a little applause. That motivated me and spurred me to start with encouragement. I was calm. No words got tangled on my tongue. I certainly had a great time. It was like living a dream or a fantasy.
From that day on, I frequented that place with my new friends. Although I was doing it to feel good, I didn't realize that I was developing one of my most precious talents.
ESCRÍBEME UNA HISTORIA
Cuando estaba en la universidad, tenía el típico grupo de amigos con el que me juntaba a charlar después de clases, comíamos una merienda en el cafetín junto con un café con leche espumoso, y luego nos íbamos a la plaza a chismear sobre los acontecimientos más jocosos recientes.
Mi rutina siempre era de la casa a la universidad, no tenía nada más que agregar. No era una persona muy fiestera o extrovertida, al contrario, prefería el cobijo de las cuatro paredes de mi habitación. Cuando estaba cansado de los estudios, me gustaba tomar mi bolígrafo y escribir historias de ficción con una moraleja filosófica. Hacía ‘fanfics’ de mis personajes favoritos de series y luego les agregaba un toque muy fantasioso satisfactorio para mí.
Una vez, hice una historia sobre Light Yagami de Death Note, creando una trama completamente diferente de cómo hubiera sido la última temporada, luego diversificaba las historias, creando mis propios personajes envueltos en una trama filosófica, basada en las cosas que leía y mi percepción sobre el mundo.
Llené un cuaderno hasta la mitad de todas esas historias, el cual actualmente ya no poseo, pero como me hubiera encantado leerlo nuevamente para recordar viejos tiempos.
Un día, mientras esperaba en la plaza de la universidad para entrar a clases, observé a un grupo de chicos góticos recitando poemas al aire libre. Su bella forma de recitarlos atrapó completamente mi atención, y fui acercándome a ellos para escuchar mejor a medida que iban recitando nuevos poemas. Al final, uno de ellos comenzó a relatar una historia de ficción escrita por él, basándose en un cuento de Edgar Allan Poe.
“¿Te gustan las historias?” Me preguntó una de las chicas góticas. Fue tan repentino, que dí un paso atrás de sobresalto.
“Eh… Sí…, me gustan mucho,” contesté tímidamente. “También me gusta escribir historias.”
“¿De verdad? ¿Tienes una allí para que me leas?” Preguntó ella con intriga.
“Oh no, lo siento. No traje mi cuaderno.”
“Lástima…” resopló. “Mi nombre es Susana, y ellos son mis amigos. Todas las tardes nos reunimos a las cuatro en el jardín de FACES a recitar poemas y relatar historias, quizás puedas venir para que relates uno de tus cuentos.”
“¡Me encantaría!” Dije emocionado, pero solo por el momento, ya que tenía pánico escénico.
“Toma, ten mi correo,” ofreció ella, “para que me envíes una de tus historias. Me gusta leer a escritores aficionados.” Confesó con una sonrisa.
Me hizo reír con su comentario. En ese momento, observé el reloj de mi celular y me di cuenta que ya estaba retrasado. Me despedí y salí disparado para mi clase.
Esa misma noche, en mi habitación, estaba sentado frente a la computadora redactando uno de mis mejores cuentos para enviárselo a Susana, pero estaba tan inseguro, que cualquier crítica me hacía sentir muy pequeño.
Sin mirar a las teclas y con un impulso de adrenalina, le envié el archivo con un resoplido. Estaba nervioso. No sabía si lo iba a leer esa noche. Capaz sí lo lee, pensaba, todavía es muy temprano, no le di más vueltas al asunto, así que me dispuse a estudiar para pensar en otra cosa.
Al día siguiente, no había recibido ninguna respuesta de Susana. Supuse que no le había gustado mi historia. Quedé algo triste, ya que me sentía halagado al saber que alguien se interesaba en las cosas que escribía. Fue una sensación muy agradable, y aunque no se concretó como me hubiera gustado, me inspiró para que mi imaginación se motivara a crear nuevas historias.
Esa tarde-noche, al llegar a mí casa, revisé mi correo electrónico para ver si me había llegado material nuevo de la universidad, y para mi sorpresa, encontré un correo de Susana, el cual decía que estaba maravillada con el cuento que le había enviado, y que si podía relatarlo frente a sus amigos en el jardín de FACES mañana.
Aquello contentó mi corazón, pero también me hizo sentir muchos nervios. Relatar frente a un grupo de personas no era una idea atractiva para mí, incluso quería evitarlo, pero luego pensé que si no lo hacía, me arriesgaría a perder a la única persona que se interesó por mis escritos en ese momento.
Me sentía atorado, pero a la mañana siguiente, después de pensarlo mejor, decidí hacerlo. A las cuatro de la tarde, me dirigí al jardín de FACES donde se hallaba Susana y sus amigos, pero había olvidado un detalle muy importante: Dejé en casa el cuento que iba a relatarles. Al confesárselo, ella solo sonrió y me dijo:
“¡No te preocupes! Imprimí varias copias para mí y mis amigos. A todos nos gustó tu cuento, pero queremos que el autor original lo relate para nosotros.”
Todos me miraron sonriendo lanzándome pequeños aplausos. Aquello me motivó y me impulsó a comenzar con ánimo. Estuve tranquilo. No se enredaron las palabras en mi lengua. Ciertamente, la pasé muy bien. Era como vivir un sueño o una fantasía.
Desde ese día, frecuenté aquél lugar con mis nuevos amigos. Aunque lo hacía para sentirme bien, no me daba cuenta que estaba desarrollando uno de mis talentos más preciados.
